MARCUS BAKER CU5739

by Chris Simon and Julian Heicklen

Marcus Baker CU5739 is in the State Correctional Institution (SCI) in Greene County. In the property room on March 1, 1998, Sergeant Tanner, Correctional Officer (CO) Howell, and CO Boschic jumped on Mr. Baker when he refused to allow an officer to read his legal mail. Sergeant Tanner stabbed him with his keys in the elbow and slammed his head against the wall. Mr. Baker was in handcuffs at the time. His elbow required four stitches.

The incident was witnessed by inmate Charles Lewis AF7149, whose cell was next to the property room. According to Mr. Lewis, Mr. Baker was in the property room attempting to get some legal papers when Sergeant Tanner and another officer grabbed his arm. Mr. Lewis then saw Sergeant Tanner's "hand raise up to strike at the inmate with his set of keys." At this point Mr. Lewis' view into the room was blocked, but he did see drops of blood upon the floor when Mr. Baker exited. Workers were then called over to clean up this blood.
