Numerical Solutions Applied To Heat Transfer And Fluid
Mechanics Problems
Quantifying Numerical Diffusion. Wiggles.
This lecture covers two separate topics and is based on two class handouts.
The first is a chapter from a PhD thesis by Rafael Macian (Penn State,
1996), describing the use of a method developed by Levenspiel (O. Levenspiel,
Chemical Reaction Engineering, 2nd Ed., Wiley, New York, 1972) for analysis
of mixing in chemical reactors. The C-curve method permits us to
extract information from numerical experments, and make quantitative statements
about the effective coefficient of numerical diffusion for a given numerical
method. The second topic describes the interaction of boundary conditions
with numerical flow solutions as a function of Peclet number. It
is based on Section III-C-8 from "Computational Fluid Dynamics" by Patrick
Roache (Hermosa Publishers, Albuquerque, 1972).
