WHAT IS HOMEOPATHY?

Is the natural form (plants, minerals, etc.) of 
       medicine used to treat various ailments

  Uses the similar cause of the ailment to treat 
       the ailment (also known as the Law of Similars)

     For example, insomnia from coffee would be treated with small doses of 
            coffea

  Was discovered by Dr. Samuel Christian Hahnemann of Germany in the

  Derived from the Greek words

       homios-like or similar

       pathos-suffering

TECHNIQUES OF HOMEOPATHY

  Basis of homeopathy is to treat like with like (Law of Similars)

  Uses mostly plants, minerals, and other natural substances to cure the
       symptoms (all over-the-counter remedies)

  First proving was done, by Hahnemann, using quinine to cure malaria
       Quinine expresses the same symptoms as malaria when taken in large      
            doses

  Homeopathic treatment is carried out by fully qualified health
       practitioners and DHM's (Doctor of Homeopathic Medicine)

PRO'S:

Treats the whole person (physically and psychologically) and the symptoms

Usually proves effective

Natural remedies (all over-the-counter)

Lower cost than regular doctor visits

  Doctor/patient relationship is very personal (doctor can spend up to 1 1/2 to  
        2 hours analyzing the person and the symptoms)

CON'S:

Problems may be from another cause, not the one being treated

Patient must follow exact directions, or it will not work

May not be effective for some people

May take longer to cure ailment than conventional medicine

  In 1997, an estimated $21.2 billion dollars was paid towards homeopathic
        therapies

  There are over 100,000 homeopathic practitioners in India with nearly as
        many in Pakistan

  The royal family of England has been under homeopathic care since the
        1830's

  In France, 33% of the population uses homeopathic therapies

Izvestia, a homeopathic clinic in Russia for laborers, documented a 10.1%
        decrease in days lost due to illness

Strong opposition from AMA (AMA Code of Ethics prohibits members from
