Recipe for making apple juice plates (from Abmayr, Sp'00)

To make 2 liters (~9 stryofoam plates worth)

Combine the following in a 4 liter flask:

Autoclave 30' and then cool until the flask is just tolerable to touch (60oC).

Add 500 ml apple juice and mix by swirling the flask (store excess juice in the cold room for future use).

Add 30 ml 10% tegosept (dissolved first in ethanol).

10 ml of 1X Penicillin/Streptomycin antibiotic mix

There is a 100X stock of antibiotic mix in the door of the enzyme freezer.  Thaw this and prepare just enough of the 1X mixture.  Return the 100X stock to the freezer.
Pour mixture into styrofoam plates that have been placed on a clean, level surface.  Since the plates will be stacked, the bench top should be clean to reduce the possibility of contaminating plates.

After the plates have hardened, stack them in a plastic bag and store them in a green tub in the cold room.

To make grape plates, simply replace the apple juice with grape juice.  The flies don't seem to care which you use.
