METAPHYSICS

Metaphysics is the rigorous investigation of the fundamental presuppositions of theory and practice

I am interested in metaphysical questions in the philosophy of mind, theory of identity, the concept of person and freedom of will, and the analysis of space and time. I write extensively on topics in the history of metaphysics, and on the distinction between minds and machines. This work is represented primarily by my book, Philosophy of Mind. I have recently written on Plato on the parts of the soul, and on color realism. I have have recently published a book manuscript on David Hume’s Critique of Infinity in the metaphysics of mathematics. My most comprehensive study of metaphysics thus far is found in my book Ontology, which develops a combinatorial analysis of the concept of being to answer problems of pure philosophical ontology, which is then brought to bear on problems of applied scientific ontology. As a Resident Research Fellow at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences (NIAS) I began further work in the ontology of mathematics, for a projected book on Mathematical Entity. I have been actively involved in philosophical evaluation of the concept of infinity, leaning toward a strict finitism inspired by Berkeley, Hume, and Wittgenstein. I am currently at work on a critical study of Early Wittgenstein on Identity.

Listed here are my publications specifically related to metaphysics:
