LOGIC

Logic is the theory of correct reasoning

My research in logic is conducted on several fronts. In Meinongian Logic: The Semantics of Existence and Nonexistence, and numerous related articles, I develop a formal symbolic logic for an intentionalist semantics of existent, abstract, and beingless objects.

The logic I have advanced is a three-valued system in which it is possible to refer and truly predicate properties of nonexistent as well as existent objects as intended objects of thought. The advantages of the logic include its metaphysical neutrality with respect to all objects in its semantic domain, its straightforward formalization of ordinary thought and discourse, and its ability to solve certain otherwise formally intractable problems encountered by classical extensional logic. Ontic commitment is not expressed as the value of existentially bound variables in the logic, but by means of an existence predicate. In many other respects, the logic delivers all of the inferential apparatus of classical logic, which my system embeds, without the existence presuppositions and related logical limitations of classical logic.

Additionally, I have made contributions to more specialized topics in logic theory and applications. These include work in metatheory, foundations of mathematics, modal logics, including deontic logic, theoretical foundations of paraconsistent logic, the analysis of logical paradoxes, including among others the liar, the validity or Pseudo-Scotus, Buridan’s bridge, the soundness paradox, the sorities and slippery slope, and the surprise event paradox. I have also published numerous articles in special topics in the history of logic, including work on Kurt Gödel, Alonzo Church, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Alfred Tarski, I.M. Bochenski, and contemporary logicians. My recently published book, Wittgenstein’s Thought in Transition offers a detailed exposition of Wittgenstein’s early logic in his Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus and the 1929 essay, ‘Some Remarks on Logical Form’.

I have also published an introductory classical logic textbook, Symbolic Logic, and edited the Blackwell Companion to Philosophical Logic, as well as two additional projects for Blackwell, Philosophy of Logic: An Anthology and Philosophy of Mathematics: An Anthology. My book, Ontology makes substantial use of pure and applied logic to clarify and work toward solutions of longstanding problems in pure philosophical and applied scientific ontology. My historical and mathematical introduction to Boolean algebra, On Boole, discusses not only formal aspects of Boole's logic, but also its frequently criticized psychologism. Most recently, I have published an extensive collection of newly commissioned papers in many areas of philosophical logic, titled Philosophy of Logic in the Elsevier (North-Holland) Handbook of the Philosophy of Science series. I am currently preparing two texts in logic, Logic, Philosophy, Analysis and Frege: A Philosophical Biography.

Listed here are my publications in logic:
