Course Description: Audio-lingual
(communicative) approach to basic Spanish; focus on four skills: reading,
listening, speaking, and writing. Students who have
received high school credit for two or more years of Spanish may not
schedule this course for credit, without the permission of the department.
(Description adapted from the University catalog). Prerequisite: None.
Skills and Experience: I do not expect you to know anything at all about Spanish. This class will probably be different than any other language class that you have had. We will only speak Spanish in class and you will do all of your homework on the computer.
Technology: You will be using a computer to complete your homework assignments, as well as other in-class and outside of class assignments. If you are not a computer expert, don’t worry, you’ll learn what you need to know. I am not grading your ability to use a computer; I am only grading your Spanish skills. Therefore, your computer skills will not affect your grade in your Spanish class (unless, of course, you don’t complete the assignments given). Please see me individually if you have concerns.
Goals and Objectives of the Course: Please see the "Welcome to Spanish" pages that are attached to this Syllabus which explain in detail the goals and objectives of each element of the class.
Instructional Approaches: This class is a communicative language class. That means that we will spend much of our time "talking" in Spanish, either in small groups or as an entire class. It is expected that you will have read the pages which have been assigned and come to class prepared to be able to "use" what you read. This will include answering and asking questions, participating in presentations (both graded and nongraded), working in groups on projects which will then be presented in front of the class to the rest of your classmates, etc.
At the beginning of each class I will ask if there are questions, doubts, or comments. If there are no questions, we will begin the class. I will not be explaining the grammar in the sense of grammar explanations. Instead, we will be using the grammar explanation that you have read in the book in the classroom. This is not to say that I won’t explain a grammar point if asked a question, but we will try to work through it through examples, etc.
Please do not hesitate to ask me questions because if you don’t understand there are probably others that don’t understand either. Or, if you feel more comfortable, please see me in my office during my office hours.
Finally, we will be working on two major Cultural Diversity activities during this semester: El día de los muertos and Semana Santa. You will work in groups on these activities and we will prepare them for display for the entire campus. We will discuss these two activities in more detail as the semester goes on.
Class Assignments
Attached is a copy of the class syllabus for the entire semester. By using the electronic version of the syllabus you will be able to access all of your homework there: the electronic workbook, the video lab, and the web activities. You can find the electronic version of this syllabus at:
All students are expected to act with civility and personal integrity; respect other students’ dignity, rights and property; and help create and maintain an environment in which all can succeed through the fruits of their own efforts. An environment of academic integrity is requisite to respect for self and others and a civil community.
Academic integrity includes a commitment to not engage in or tolerate acts of falsification, misrepresentation, or deception. Such acts of dishonesty include cheating or copying, plagiarizing, submitting another persons’ work as one’s own, using Internet sources without citation, fabricating field data or citations, "ghosting" (taking an exam for another student or having an exam taken for you), stealing examinations, tampering with the academic work of another student, facilitating other students’ acts of academic dishonesty, etc.
Students charged with a breach of academic integrity will receive due process and, if the charge is found valid, academic sanctions may range, depending on the severity of the offense, from an F for the assignment to an F for the course.
The University’s statement on academic integrity, from which the above statement is drawn, is available at http://www.psu.edu/dept/oue/aappm/G-9.html.
I wish everyone a very good semester and do not hesitate to see me if you have any questions or concerns whatsoever!!
