Welcome back HPA students!!

Welcome to my home page! A little introduction first....I am a formerly thirty-something Professor of Health Policy and Administration here at Penn State.  I came to Penn State in 1990 after completing my Ph.D. in Economics at Rutgers .  I did my undergraduate study, also in Economics, at the College of William and Mary in Virginia . If you want to see what I've done, check out my vita .

I am PIC (professor-in-charge) of the Undergraduate Program in Health Policy and Admininistration For more information on Undergraduate Study in Health Policy and Administration   at Penn State, click the link .

Research

My research interests are in the economics of aging and health.  I focus much of my study on models of health service use by the elderly. Some of my recent projects have included an examination of referrals patterns in the Medicare program and a project comparing home health use in the U.S. and Sweden.  Current projects include two Medicare reform projects.  One is looking at adding prescription drug coverage to Medicare.  The other project looks at extending coverage to the population under age 65.  You can see more about my research and other HPA faculty and their research interests on the  HPA Faculty Interest Directory.

Service

In my "spare" time I serve as a officer of the Lambda of Pennsylvania Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa here at Penn State.  I'm a member of the Judicial Affairs Board and a Faculty Senator for my College.  Don't ask me why I volunteer to do some of this stuff.  It's crazy, I know.

Extracurricular Activities

I am a huge Baltimore Orioles   fan and try to catch a few games each year.

I like to read and run, but haven't had a lot of time to do either recently.

I collect quotes and what I sometimes call "boy's sports books", the really hokey sort of books from the 1950s and before (I think my oldest one is from 1893).  It has something to do with a passion for "The Three-Two Pitch" a Bronc Burnett book written by Wilfred McCormick which my brothers and I read a lot as kids.

I am also busy trying to entertain my son, Connor ,  and my daughter, Caroline . Together they are "The Premie Team".  Connor was born 2/21/01, 3 months premature and weighed 2 pounds, 6 ounces.  Caroline was born 5/8/96, 2 months premature and weighed 4 pounds, 3 ounces.  They both are doing fantastic now.  For some more recent pictures, check out the Xmas collection:
