Chinese Geography
This map delineates the geographic spread of China's earliest cultures with Longshan culture centered around what is now the mouth of the Yellow River, and the Yangshao culture centered more inland around the Ordos Bend. Below is a modern map of China clearly  showing the Yellow River (Huang He) and Yangtze River (Chiang Jiang).  Over the course of history the Yellow River has changed course emptying on both sides of the Shandong pennisula.

Note the great bend of the Yellow River around what is now the Ordos Desert and the loess plateau to its south.
[On this map the Yellow River is labelled "Huang Ho"]
