I teach early American studies and, on occasion, Native American studies. My research interests include these areas along with the history of the first British empire, postcolonial theory, and the history of books and reading. For the dissertations I've directed, check out the link to my PhD students! My students are amazing! My book in progress, Benjamin Franklin and the Ends of Empire, traces Benjamin Franklin's attitudes about trade and populations in the context of the growing number of debates about what it meant to be both liberal and British during the eighteenth century.
