The Whipping Man

Clarence Brown Theater, Knoxville, TN

Matthew Lopez's The Whipping Man is a play set in the days immediately following the close of the Civil War. The Jewish owner of two newly emancipated slaves returns to his home after being wounded in the final days of the war and in that moment, the three men are forced to reveal what they have worked so hard to hide. Using folk tunes of the American South, Jewish melodies, and the traditional songs of the period as raw material, the musical elements of the design developed into a series of themes that I used throughout the show.
