Articles
The
Journal welcomes original essays relating to the life and works of Ambrose Bierce, and to
United States history and culture of the
nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Interdisciplinary
studies are encouraged. Although we do not have
a specific word requirement, essays will
usually fall between 5,000 and 12,000 words. For the house style,
authors should consult The Chicago Manual of Style.
We can publish still images to accompany the text of an article. Images
should be in .jpg or .gif formats. Please note that contributors
must secure permission from the owner/creator of photographs,
drawings, and other
media before publication.
Literary & Historical Briefs
Briefs will not typically exceed 2,000 words, excluding notes. A literary
brief offers a critical perspective on a single Bierce story, poem,
or work of nonfiction prose. (For a representative sampling of Bierce's publications, see the Works page.) Historical briefs each provide a short
analysis of a particular event or figure touching the life of Bierce
and his contemporaries. When
preparing submissions, authors should consult The Chicago Manual
of Style.
Reviews
The Journal reviews works of new and
recent scholarship about Bierce, Civil War history and memory, the
American West, nineteenth-century
American
journalism, weird and supernatural fiction, satire, and many other
subjects. To propose a review,
please write to bierce@psu.edu. Reviews will not usually exceed 2,000
words.
