Resources:

Available from ESRI Press: Designed Maps: A Sourcebook for GIS Users (2008) and Designing Better Maps: A Guide for GIS Users (2005). Chapter titles and section headings for Designed Maps and Designing Better Maps.

Census Atlas of the United States is the first comprehensive atlas of population and housing produced by the Census Bureau since the 1920s. Trudy Suchan is first author and project leader, and I'm included in the author set. Chapters in PDF for the large-format publication (300 pages, 800 maps) are online and the atlas is now for sale.

ScaleMaster resources include articles, poster, and a do-it-yourself Excel file available for download. ScaleMaster is a structured diagram for organizing multi-scale mapping using multiple databases and design, selection, and generalization decisions.
