Digression

Something just flew up -- a bird! The sun
Is pale among the winter trees today.
The grasses, bleach'd into a silver grey,
Rustle in the wind. Sam talks to some one
Walking in the woods with him. Did he say
He wants to have his cake and eat it too?
How could he eat it if he doesn't? You
Tell me. Sam tells her, "Alice, come away
With me. We will trip the Light Fantastic
At the Club. We'll drink champagne and stay
As long as music plays." She says, "Okay."
"We'll avoid folks who are glum, sarcastic,

Bitter, mad." "Okay." "Alice, I love you."
"Okay, I guess I'll say it, Sam... Me too."
