The image “file:///C:/DOCUME~1/AXS27/LOCALS~1/TEMP/ochaSensei.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.Hello, I teach about and conduct health services research in the area Gerontology, which is the study of aging. Gerontology comprises many dimensions and disciplines from the biological/medical to the psychological/social  to the realm of public policy and ethics. I'm interested in the care of older adults across a variety of health services settings from nursing homes to home health agencies.  Some of my research has examined nursing homes and paid caregivers, focusing on how to improve quality of care and quality of life through management practices and organizational design. Currently, I'm very interested at looking at ways to improve the quality of home health care on the policy level. I've spent the last 12 years in Japan, as a professor of Gerontology, so some of my photos will be from Japan.
This is a photo of my tea ceremony teacher who was 83 at the time (in gray kimono) and had a memory like a steel trap. You can read about some of my research below.

In addition to teaching and research I like to keep my clinical skills up-to-date and stay in touch with the health care needs and experiences of older adults. I worked full-time as a Home Health Nurse for the Addison County Home Health and Hospice, in Middlebury VT for the last two years and I currently work in PA as a Home Health Nurse part-time. This enables me to better understand access to and utilization of services, the quality of services, and the values and beliefs of the older adults in need of these services.

Volunteer/ Community Service:

I’ve organized a variety of volunteer experiences that enabled students to develop and implement recreational activities for nursing home residents. Some of these activities are based on the work of Dr Linda Buettner http://www.fgcu.edu/cfpa/Research.asp?id=9 who teaches at the University of Southern Florida.
I’ve also led seminars in hospitals which focused on educating and training staff about the kinds of dilemmas that arise in end-of-life care for terminal dementia patients.
