Cultivation refers to mechanical methods of selective tillage that
modify physical and possibly other characteristics of a turf. Cultivation
practices are primarily designed to reduce problems associated with excessive
thatch and soil compaction. The principal types of cultivation are hollow-tine
cultivation (HTC), solid-tine cultivation (STC), water-injection cultivation
(WIC), slicing, spiking, and vertical mowing.
