Ann Marie Major has worked in and taught communications, advertising, and public relations for 25 years. She joined Penn State in 1995 after teaching at the University of Illinois and Southern Illinois University. She was a visiting lecturer at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and Hong Kong Baptist University. Prior to full-time teaching and research, Major served as vice president of corporate public relations for The Claremont Group in St. Louis and as portfolio director for Leo Burnett Chicago. Her research interests include international political communication, public opinion and the news media, and mass media history.

Some of her writings have been published in Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly the International Journal of Mass Emergencies and Disasters, the International Journal of Public Opinion Research, Health Communication, Public Understanding of Science, Public Relations Review, the Journal of Public Relations Research, and Public Relations (Taiwan) magazine. She is the author of opinion articles in newspaper and trade publications.

With L. Erwin Atwood, she is co-author of the book Good-Bye Gweilo: Public Opinion and the 1997 Problem in Hong Kong. She is working on her second book about the history of environmental news coverage in addition to articles currrently in press. She teaches public relations courses.

She is an accredited member of the Public Relations Society of America and continues to provide pro bono public relations counsel to nonprofit organizations that otherwise could not afford public relations expertise.
