R/C Model Aircraft Aerobatic Pattern Maneuvers
  • OK, so now you know how to fly!
    • You can Takeoff (i.e. Get the airplane in the air)
    • You can Land (i.e. Get the airplane on the ground, usually in one, or a small number of pieces)
    • While in the air, you can make your model perform some maneuvers (i.e. Sometimes it even does what you had intended)
  • But!
  • Can you make your model follow a prescribed pattern???

R/C Model Aircraft Aerobatic Pattern Maneuvers
  • Do you sometimes wonder what should I be doing now that I know how to fly?
  • There are many interesting challenges in the R/C hobby, for example:
    • Soaring Duration
    • Combat
    • Pylon Racing
    • Challenging World Records
    • etc.
  • How about Aerobatic Pattern Maneuvers for the Modeler flying the typical powered R/C?

  • Radio Control Pattern  --  Objective
    • To Control by radio, a model airplane so that various planned maneuvers may be accomplished.  The criterion is the quality of execution of the maneuvers compared to defined geometric descriptions and specified procedures.

R/C Model Aircraft Aerobatic Pattern Maneuvers
  • Sportsman Pattern Maneuvers
    • Takeoff (U) k=1
    • Straight Flight Out (U) k=1
    • Half Reverse Cuban Eight k=1
    • Straight Flight Back (D) k=1
    • Stall Turn Without Rolls (U) k=2
    • Immelmann Turn (U) k=2
    • Split “S” k=1
    • Three (3) Inside Loops (U) k=3
    •  One (1) Horizontal Roll (D) k=1
    •  Landing (U) k=1

R/C Model Aircraft Aerobatic Pattern Maneuvers
  • Takeoff (U)
    • Stand still with engine running
    • Smoothly accelerates
    • Rotate to takeoff attitude
    • Gently lift off the ground at flying speed
    • Climb at gradual angle
    • Maintain heading during the takeoff maneuver
8
R/C Model Aircraft Aerobatic Pattern Maneuvers
  • Straight Flight Out (U)
    • The model must be brought exactly parallel to the flight path and flown in an absolutely straight and level path for a distance of approximately 100 meters (300 feet) centered on the judges before starting the Half Reverse Cuban Eight.
9
R/C Model Aircraft Aerobatic Pattern Maneuvers
  • Half Reverse Cuban Eight
    • Model pulls up to 45 degrees and hesitates
    • perform one-half (1/2) roll and hesitate
    • execute five-eighths (5/8) inside loop
    • recover to level flight
10
R/C Model Aircraft Aerobatic Pattern Maneuvers
  • Straight Flight Back (D)
    • Immediately after the Half Reverse Cuban Eight the model shall fly back along the same line as the outgoing path (Straight Flight Out)
11
R/C Model Aircraft Aerobatic Pattern Maneuvers
  • Stall Turn Without Rolls (U)
    • Execute one-quarter (1/4) loop to a vertical track
    • Perform stall turn through 180 degrees
    • Recover with another one-quarter (1/4) loop
    • Resume level flight in the opposite direction
12
R/C Model Aircraft Aerobatic Pattern Maneuvers
  • Immelmann Turn (U)
    • Start flying straight and level
    • Pull up into one-half (1/2) loop
    • Immediately follow with one-half (1/2) roll
    • Finish flying straight and level at 180 degrees from the heading at entry
13
R/C Model Aircraft Aerobatic Pattern Maneuvers
  • Split “S”
    • Perform one-half (1/2) roll in level flight
    • Immediately execute one-half (1/2) loop to level flight in opposite direction as entry
14
R/C Model Aircraft Aerobatic Pattern Maneuvers
  • Three (3) Inside Loops (U)
    • Model pulls up and executes three (3) consecutive loops
    • All loops shall be round and superimposed
15
R/C Model Aircraft Aerobatic Pattern Maneuvers
  • One (1) Horizontal Roll (D)
    • Roll, at a uniform rate, through one (1) revolution in either direction
    • Center is the inverted portion of the maneuver
16
R/C Model Aircraft Aerobatic Pattern Maneuvers
  • Landing (U)
    • Landing starts two (2) meters from the ground
    • Flare smoothly to a nose high attitude
    • Dissipate speed and touch ground smoothly within the landing zone
    • Landing complete after touchdown and up to 15 meters straight rollout
