Minutes from the September Meeting

The September Meeting

The September Meeting

Chuck Paulson called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM. Larry Brown was in attendance as new member who found out about our club on the web. Larry attended one other meeting last March. Wanda White is a neighbor of the Centre Air Park/SCRC field and was present as a visitor. Wanda represents a group of concerned residents who asked that we limit our flying hours due to engine noise. Lori and John Cowell from Monogram Centre stopped by to drop off the embroidered hats and shirts that were ordered by SCRC Members. Lori also offered some input on what it was like be a neighbor of the club field and had some very kind words to say in support of our activities.

1.       The minutes from the August 5th meeting were approved.

2.       Al Jones read the Treasurer’s report. Expenses since last month included field maintenance, $140 for porta-jon rental and $432 for SCRC hats. The air show brought in $74.75 in donations and $100 from Packer’s, the food vendor. We still have some outstanding payments to make for air show items. SCRC currently has 46 paid members. Al advised the balance of the SCRC account and his report was approved by membership.

3.       Old business –

·         Chuck Paulson thanked the air show committee and everyone who helped out with the show. Chuck suggested that for next year, we should work out an agreement in advance with the food vendor because we could possibly receive more than $100. He also suggested that we start the show at 1:00pm next year to coincide with the arrival of most of the spectators. We should also have SCRC flyers available at the raffle table to help promote the club.

·         Although Nathaniel Rice was not present, Chuck took a moment to congratulate him on his recent first place win at the R/C helicopter jamboree (IRCHA Amateurs National competition) at AMA headquarters in Muncie, Indiana. We’ve all witnessed Nathaniel’s amazing flying and now the whole world knows the extent of his skill level! Congratulations, Nathaniel!

·         Hugh brought up some safety violations that were brought to his attention. Some members are not tying down their planes, flying models over the flight line, not standing at the flight line while flying and not placing their AMA cards on the frequency board – or not removing the card when they are done flying. Please take these rules seriously for your own safety and the safety of others. Hugh will start requesting that warning letters be written for such violations.

4.       New Business –

·         Chuck asked for volunteers and appointed a committee to study the noise problem and address the concerns of Wanda White and her neighbors. The committee will include Chuck Paulson, Henry Margusity, Al Jones and Sam Stitzer.

·         As a temporary measure, Al Jones motioned to not allow the operation of internal combustion engines after 6:00 p.m. (any night) - and limit the hours of operation to 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. This does not apply to electric-powered models. Motion carried.

The motion for adjournment passed at 8:02 PM.

Leo Lang won the 50-50 drawing, splitting $14.00 with the club.

Coming Event

October 4 & 5 – Wings of Williamsport Fun Fly at their field off Rt. 220 across from the Harvest Moon Restaurant. This is always a fun event and it’s free!

Buzzard Field Fun Fly

I went to the Buzzard Field Fun Fly on September 20 and 21. I took my teardrop trailer and camped out on Saturday night. There’s something nice about camping out on a clear, autumn’s eve! The weather was perfect for flying on both days. I flew my Circuit Rider electric glider on several very enjoyable flights, catching a few thermals, finally landing when my neck hurt from looking up! Several other SCRC members were there: Daryl Allen, Ron Lueth, and Karl Stashak all enjoyed the great flying and hospitality.

Brian Leuthold, the Buzzard Field Club president brought a large trailer load of planes including a 23 lb. Stearman biplane powered by a Saito 3.25 cubic inch five cylinder radial engine. It has a circular exhaust collector with a bottom exiting pipe like a real radial. It has ten glow plugs! Five of them are lit with a battery, and the other five glow from the heat of combustion after the engine is started. They help the idle and throttle transition. It spun a prop of about 20” diameter, and oh, man – the sound it makes! It was worth the trip just to hear it run! In a half throttle fly-by; it was really hard to tell it wasn’t a real Stearman!

Cal Wilson, from Mill Hall, had a scratch-built electric powered version of the old Top Flite Contender 40. Cal added one bay to each wing and a few degrees of dihedral, which made it fly even better than the original. It weighed just 4 ˝ lbs. with an outrunner motor and a three cell Li-Po battery. It’s a smooth flyer, and is very aerobatic. Cal was a design engineer at Piper Aircraft, and his skill really shows in his models!

All in all, we had a good time flying and downing a bunch of their excellent food! I look forward to going again next year!
