Minutes from the October Meeting

The October Meeting

The October Meeting

Chuck Paulson called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM.

1.       The minutes from the September 2nd meeting were approved.

2.       The Treasurer’s report was read by Al Jones. Except for the skydiving performance, all air show expenses are now paid. We paid for 36 embroidered SCRC hats. 19 hats have been sold. Bob Grove was reimbursed for the porta-john rental. Woody was paid for September’s field maintenance. Al advised the account balance and his report was approved.

3.       Old business –

·         Chuck Paulson read the following recommendations from the noise committee meeting:

                   i.      No flying is allowed before 10am on Saturdays and Sundays. Flying is allowed in the evenings after 6pm. This is a change from the club decision voted at the last meeting where we voted not to allow flying after 6pm.

ii.      The major recommendation is to move the flying areas. The purpose of these changes is to move the helicopters and gas and glow planes to the west end away from Wanda and Mike’s house.

iii.      The helicopter flying area will move to the west end of the field, past Bob Grove’s trailer to the edge of the corn field. There is room for about 5 cars to be parked at the edge of the field and still allow airplanes to taxi back to their hangars.

iv.      The gas and glow planes will move about 50 yards west, to the side of the hangar. Flying is permitted to the left (east) only up to the barrel left of the windsock, but there is no limit to the right (west) direction.

                   v.      Electrics are encouraged to fly in the old helicopter area on the east end of the field, but can fly whenever they want.

vi.      Mufflers cannot be modified to create more noise. Some people have removed baffles or other changes that create more noise, these changes are not allowed anymore.

vii.      Use common sense about where and when you fly.

 ·         Lori Cowell sent a message to Chuck commenting on the noise reduction noticed during September. Chuck heard from Wanda White, also happy with the recent noise reduction. Wanda requested SCRC air show flyers for next year so neighbors are aware of the event. Also, she requested no flying after 6:00 pm - and no flying on Sundays.

·         Daryl Allen motioned to set the flying hours for gas and glow models from 10:00 am until dusk, daily. Al Jones suggested a firm quitting time such as 8:30 pm. Motion was amended to 10:00 am to 8:30 pm. Motion carried.

·         Motions to accept the remaining noise committee recommendations as outlined above were passed.

·         Per Wanda White’s request, Chuck motioned to ban flying on Sundays. Motion died from lack of support.

·         Al Jones spoke of the Haugh land tract, now owned by Ferguson Township, as a remote possibility for a new flying field. Al Niessner advised that the university’s Ag Progress lands would not be a good prospect, even though some groups do manage to fly model aircraft in the Rock Springs area. Al Jones reminded us that planning for the Whitehall Road Park Project begins in January. SCRC will contact the planning board again next month to reinforce SCRC’s interest in obtaining a flying field within the proposed park.

·         Henry Margusity was approached by Roy Long who suggested that a donation to the Civil Air Patrol would be appreciated for the fine job they did for the SCRC air show in August. Chuck motioned to donate $100. Al Jones advised that he will submit a balance sheet in November which may show that such donations could indicate a possible dues increase. After discussion among the members, the motion for the donation passed.

4.       New Business –

·         Chuck asked for volunteers for the nominating committee. Al Jones pointed out that the club bylaws call for the last president to chair the committee. This means that we need to call on Curt Buergin and then find two other volunteers for the committee by the November meeting. We had no volunteers among the attendees.

Chuck confirmed that American Legion is booked for SCRC’s winter banquet on January 24th. Chuck offered to work out the details with Donna, and then present the information to the members at the next meeting.

5.       Show and Tell –

·         George Gurney brought a miniature helicopter to show. Alex did a fine job of flying it around the room. George also had a self-designed delta dart type model made of foam. He used the components from a small Parkzone Cessna to power and control the plane. Many of the parts are mounted to a single PC board. This made for a neat installation. George reports that it flies well outside at his home and he performed a short flight demo in the meeting room. Good job, George!

The meeting was adjourned at 8:15.

Woody Struble won the 50-50 drawing, splitting $16.00 with the club.

R/C Flying Demonstration

On October 14, George Gurney, Al Niessner, Ron Lueth and I gave a flying demo at Penns Valley High School. This has become an annual event for the eighth grade science students. We showed them how the controls work and answered a few questions, then proceeded to fly some models. Of course it was windy, but we were able to hand launch directly into the wind in a relatively open area east of the school building. George flew his tiny R/C Delta Dart and got it back in one piece! It handled the wind well for such a small model! Ron and Al both flew small electric foamie aerobatic ships to the delight of the kids, then Al and I flew our two meter electric gliders. Al scared us a bit when he was making his landing approach over a row of trees, and barely had enough power to penetrate the strong wind! He managed to just clear the trees and set the plane down nicely! We had some fun and the kids and teachers enjoyed the show!

Video link

Here is a link to a great R/C glider video from Germany. It features scale sailplanes being towed by a scale tow plane. I think it’s a Polish Wilga. There is some good on board video shot from a glider in tow, too. It makes me want to build a scale sailplane!
