Minutes from the June Meeting

The July Meeting

The June Meeting

The June Meeting was called to order at 7:00 PM on June 5. Mr. Lee Crane was in attendance as a Mark Wharton’s guest.

   1. The meeting minutes from the May 1st, 2007 meeting were approved.

   2. The Treasurer’s report was read by Al Jones and approved by the members. Al advised that the rent and the maintenance fees for the field have been paid. Postage was purchased for the distribution of SCRC newsletters.

   3. Old business –

·         The nominating committee nominated Chuck Paulson for the vacant office of SCRC vice president. Al Jones motioned to accept Chuck as our new VP. Motion passed. Thank you, Chuck for jumping in when needed.

·         Curt reminded us of the upcoming Open Fun Fly on June 24th. Al Niessner will post a notice on the SCRC website. Also, there is an EAA meeting at the field Thursday, June 7th so the flying of model aircraft is suspended for that day.

·         The lines for the pits, fifteen feet behind the flight line, have not been painted yet. No one has talked to Jack Garbrick to get the OK. Woody did cut the grass a bit shorter in this area to help designate the pit area.(Update: It has been painted with a yellow stripe)

·         Henry Margusity gave an update on the planning for the air show. He is still working with the food vendors. Daryl has contacted two competition flyers who are willing to do large-scale model 3D flying demonstrations. Nathaniel Rice has made contact with two pro helicopter flyers that may be able to make it to the air show.

·         More research has been done into the matter of SCRC’s tax-exempt status. As it turns out, our club is exempt from filing income tax returns as long as we have an organizational document, an EIN, gross less than $20,000 in yearly receipts and have no employees. This applies to all federal, state and local income taxes.

   4. New Business –

·         Because we were considering the idea of having a raffle at the air show, Curt checked into Pennsylvania’s “small games of chance” laws. This may require a $100 annual fee to conduct up to three “special occasion” raffles per year. The local DA’s office verbally OK’d our traditional monthly meeting 50/50 drawing. Al Jones moved to continue the 50/50 among the members. Motion passed.

·         Woody Struble mentioned that there was some confusion over being allowed to fly on Sunday mornings. He assured us that the Sunday morning ban on flying applied only to the old field   and it is OK to fly any time now. This lead to a discussion concerning a complaint received from a neighboring home owner about flying at night and the noise. Al Jones offered to talk to club members with night-flying capabilities to see if this can be resolved at a personal level.

·         Up for discussion was Curt Buergin’s e-mail message concerning conflicts with full-scale aircraft and his discussion with a representative of the AMA. Curt made a motion to amend the rules to require a mandatory spotter at the field, suspend the flying of model gliders and install an outdoor speaker so radio communications can be heard at the flight line. The motion died on the floor for lack of support. However, the speaker project is an unresolved issue from last year which will be addressed with Roy Long and the CAP.

·         Curt motioned to designate a specific area to fly - a model aircraft holding pattern for cases when landing soon enough to safely avoid full-scale aircraft is not possible. Motion passed. This area will be over the field directly across the street from Centre Air Park.

·         Al Jones motioned to resume an active search for a new flying site. Motion passed. Al will chair the committee which also includes George Mock, Sam Stitzer and Al Niessner.

·         Curt went over the checklist for the June 24th SCRC Open Fun Fly. There will be a work detail on that Sunday Morning starting at 10:00 am and any volunteers will be appreciated to help set up the canopy and the fence. A motion was made to bring your own food and drink instead of having members cook and sell food. Motion passed. The club’s propane grill will be available for your use and Curt will provide the ice.

5.   Program – No program

6.   Show and Tell –

·         Henry Margusity showed his new Katana 50 3D plane. This ARF from Raidentech is powered by an O.S. 55 two-stroke glow engine. Nice looking model, Henry - and good luck with it!

The meeting was adjourned at 8:10 pm and Henry Loewen won the 50/50 drawing.

SCRC June 24 Fun Fly

Sunday, June 24 was a nearly perfect day for flying; sunny, and summer like, but not sticky hot. I arrived around 1:30pm to find a nearly full flight line! It was the largest crowd I’ve seen there except for our air show. We had several guests from the Balsa Busters R/C Club in Dubois, including Rich Hook, who makes and sells kits. Check out richhook.com. He had his Pretender design flying very nicely. It is a 50” span high wing trainer for a 25 size engine, but will go fast and be quite aerobatic at full speed! The kit is all CNC router cut and features easily built interlocking parts.

Speaking of trainers being aerobatic, my sons goaded Karl Stashak into trying to touch the tail of his trainer on the grass on a low inverted pass. He did it, but then the nose touched too, and he made a very nice inverted landing! No damage was done, and many guys, including Karl laughed loudly about it!

We had a wide variety of aircraft being flown all day. Everything from sailplanes to screaming fast ducted fan jets were flying.

Some nice scale models were very impressive to me. Woody Struble’s quarter scale Corsair flew fast and realistically with a twin cylinder gas engine. Woody greased it in for his typical perfect landing! Henry Margusity flew his scale Transall twin with two 25’s for power. It looks and sounds great in the air! He brought it in for a great landing with the left engine dead!

Thermals were out in the warm summer air, so I put my Circuit Rider electric sailplane up for a couple 15 minute flights with about five minute motor runs. Of course, I dorked it in on landing when my son’s video camera was trained on it! He never gets my good landings! (Yeah, I know – WHAT good landings?!)

The helicopters were up doing their amazing aerobatics. A.J. Jaffe had something fail in flight, and his chopper hit the ground hard, spewing pieces on the runway. I hope it’s repairable! Sandy Jaffe flew his big scale chopper with a NOTAR tail (no tail rotor). It uses a ducted fan in the cabin area to blow air through the tail boom and out the side to provide the anti-rotation force. Very clever design!

Daryl Allen flew the parasol wing plane that was the last model Will Coder built before his death. It flew quite well, as all of Will’s designs did.  I wish Will could have seen it. He would be pleased.

Well, I could go on and on about who flew what, but I think you all get the idea that this was a very enjoyable and successful event. Thanks to all who helped to make it happen!

Daryl Allen brings the Will Coder parasol in for a smooth landing.

That’s all for now.  Let’s fly!
