In case of inclement weather

Minutes from the June Meeting

-The June Meeting-

The meeting was called to order by Pres. Jim Rhodes at 7 pm. There were 28 members and 2 guests present. Our guests were Ron Tibbott and Farley Hill. Congratulations to our 2 newest members, Eric Lysczek and Chad Eichfeld who were introduced at the beginning of the meeting.

1. Minutes - The minutes of the May 3, 2005 meeting were approved as written.

2. Treasurer’s Report - Treasurer George Gurney reported that a few more people have paid their dues and the club was in good shape. The report was approved.

3. Old Business

·        George Gurney has labels for planes that can be purchased from him at a cost of $1 per 5 labels.

·        George Gurney announced that he is selling SCRC logos for $6. Take the SCRC logo to T’s Custom Printing at 116 S. Pugh St. (237-2726) and they will put it on your own shirt for $1, or you can buy a shirt there and they will put it on for free.

·        The June fun fly will be held at our field on 6/19 starting around noon. Other clubs and guests are welcome to join us for this fun fly. Al Jones has invited the Altoona and Phillipsburg clubs to join us.

·        Jim Rhodes went through the fun fly checklist to make sure all items are taken care of. Thanks to Jim Rhodes, Jon Polay, Al Jones, Hugh and Lynn Zinsmeister, Jeff Favuzza, John Werner, and everyone else who is helping with this event.

·        Al Jones announced that he has nametags and booklets for new members.

4. New Business

·        Woody Struble made a motion to mow the lower half of the first strip of taller grass to increase the runway length for airplanes. The motion passed.

·        Ron Engle suggested that we post a map of the field and the uses of the various areas of the field. Nathaniel Rice volunteered to draw the map.

·        Hugh Zinsmeister asked about the status of the new frequency board as he has notices he wants to post. Jim Rhodes replied that it is still in progress and getting closer to finishing, but it is not done yet.

·        George Gurney received a plane from Jim Kline’s son Jeff as a gift to the club. Included are some battery packs, and a 4 channel radio. Brian Julius volunteered to take the plane, which requires some restoration work to be flyable.

5. Program – there was no program – just some good flying!.

6. Announcements

·        On 7/17 the club will hold a fun fly for members only.

·        On 6/11 Mifflintown held an R/C Expo that started at noon.

7. 50/50 Drawing – Chad Eichfeld split $28 with the club. The meeting was adjourned at 7:37 pm.

June 19th Fun Fly/Picnic

The weather was a bit cool and windy, but no rain was in sight. I put my sweatshirt on and it felt good! As the day progressed, the temperature rose, and a few thermals helped keep the sailplanes aloft. We had good attendance, including many visitors from other clubs. Cars were parked from one end of the field to the other!

Charlie Wingert and Hugh Zinsmeister cooked up some fine burgers and hot dogs, and their lovely wives sold them to hungry pilots! Heck, those babes could sell me anything!

A full spectrum of aircraft were flown – trainers, sport planes, wildly aerobatic fun fly planes, powered gliders, scale models, and even Woody Struble’s flying stop sign!

A fast electric delta lost its battery pack in flight, causing it to flip like airborne tumbleweed and flop into the weeds west of Garbrick road. At first I thought he was doing some incredible aerobatic move!

Karl Stashak throttled up his beautiful Shoestring pylon racer for takeoff, and just as it lifted off he saw that someone had walked onto the runway and the Shoestring was heading right for him! Karl instantly made the difficult decision to dump the plane, and it was severely damaged when it cartwheeled on the runway. No one was hurt, thanks to Karl’s quick action. I hope he repairs the Shoestring. It’s one of my favorite planes!

John Werner gave us a chuckle when he hand launched Henry Loewen’s huge electric Sailaire glider, then fell flat on his face! Too bad I didn’t have my camera ready! I launched the Sailaire for Henry’s next flight. It’s not that easy! The thrust of that cobalt 40 feels like it will lift me off the ground!

Other than the above mishaps, it was a great day of food, flying and fun! Thank you to all who helped to make this event a great success!

Woody Struble’s ¼ scale Cessna 310 takes off. Looks real!

Fun Fly plane. Look at the size of those ailerons!

A Sad Note

I learned at the Fun Fly that Leonard Grove, who owned the property our field sits on passed away on June 18. Leonard had a great interest in aviation, and was an avid supporter of our club. He will be missed by all who knew him. Our sympathy goes out to his family in their time of sadness.

That’s it for now. Remember, the July meeting is at the flying field.
