-The December Meeting-
December 7, 2004
The meeting was called to order by Pres. Jim Rhodes at 7 pm. There were 23 members and 3 guests present. Our guests were Peter Spink, a former member now in Pittsburgh, Kathy Scholz-Jaffe, mother of A.J. Jaffe, and Ron Tibbott, father of Nathaniel Rice.
1. Minutes - The minutes of the November 2 meeting were approved as written.
2. Treasurer’s Report
Treasurer George Gurney reported expenses of $208 for the winter banquet. The report was approved.
3. Old Business
Jon Polay, chairman of the nominations committee, nominated the current slate of officers for another term. The current slate was elected to another term. Thanks to all officers for serving another year!
Al Jones announced plans for the winter banquet. It will at the Elks Club on 1/15/05 starting at 6 pm and dinner at 7 pm. Cost is $23 per person. Try to pay in advance with George Gurney at the 1/04/05 club meeting. If you are going, please let Al Jones know by 1/10/05 by calling him at 237-2284.
The December 2004 issue of the AMA’s Model Aviation magazine has pictures of Sandy and A.J. Jaffe in it. Congratulations on getting in the magazine!
Al Niessner reported that Ellis Dunklebarger’s mother said the frequency board will not be finished this year. There are some scout rules that Ellis must follow about how work is divided up and that is slowing him down.
Jim Rhodes received email from Jordan Katz on risk management issues on flying a blimp at home basketball games. The blimp pilot probably has to be a PSU employee for insurance purposes and will be paid about $35 per event. Al Jones stated and the club agreed that this activity is NOT, in any way, a club sanctioned activity.
4. New Business
George Gurney made a motion that the club renews its one year subscription to Model Airplane News, needed for Leader Club status. The motion was approved. Also he said only 6 T-shirt club patches were sold after 2 years, but has sold 2 at the meeting already. Al Niessner commented that club patches should be put on professionally.
5. Announcements
Hugh Zinsmeister, our safety officer, stated that all planes must be tied down while starting their engines. Using needle-nosed pliers stuck in the ground does not count.
6. Program – no program this meeting.
7. Show and Tell
Nathaniel Rice showed a beautiful Great Planes Ultra Sport 40 with the OS 46 AX engine he showed in November. It weighs about 5.5 lbs and has a 58.5” wingspan. Covering is a beautiful multicolor scheme of Monokote! He also showed a detailed notebook that documents the entire build with photos, task descriptions, and the time for each task.
Leo Lang showed a Horsefly biplane build from plans in Fly RC magazine. It weights about 8 oz and has a 33.7” wingspan. It uses a GWS LPS electric motor, small LiPo batteries, and is covered in silver Solar Lite. The flying wires are thread dipped in thinned white glue to stiffen them. The cowl is thin card stock. Beautiful plane, Leo.

New Year’s Day Flying
It is an SCRC tradition to get out and fly on New Year’s Day. Come on out and fly unless there’s a blizzard! Who will make the first flight of 2005?
We had a good year in 2004. We had lots of enjoyable flying, a good club picnic, and a very successful air show, complete with newspaper and TV news coverage! There was a lot of summer rain (and mowing!), but a string of perfect Sundays in the fall made up for it. We added a storage shed at the field, too. Thanks to everyone who helped make SCRC a great organization for all! Happy New Year!
That’s all for now.
