-The January Meeting-
January 4, 2005
The meeting was called to order by Pres. Jim Rhodes at 7 pm. There were 20 members present.
1. Minutes - The minutes of the December 7, 2004 meeting were approved as written.
2. Treasurer’s Report
Treasurer George Gurney reported that, for the year, the club’s expenses exceeded its income by $1493. He also went over the major expenses (shed, prizes, newsletter, and field maintenance) and income (Airshow, donations, dues, 50/50 drawing) for the year. The report was approved.
3. Old Business – there was no old business.
4. New Business – there was no new business.
5. Announcements
Al Jones announced that 38 people had signed up for the banquet, and there were also 2 provisional signups. He and George Gurney also said that children younger than 4 were free, and between 5 and 10 years old were half price.
George Gurney announced that he is selling SCRC logos for $6. Take the SCRC logo to T’s Custom Printing at 116 S. Pugh St. (237-2726) and they will put it on your own shirt for $1, or you can buy a shirt there and they will put it on for free.
The last flight of 2004 appears to have been made by George Gurney. The first flight of 2005 appears to have been made by Woody Struble around 8:30 am on New Year’s Day.
Will Coder showed everyone the list of prizes to be drawn at the winter banquet. The winter banquet is 1/15/05 at the Elks Club with the social hour starting at 6pm and the dinner starting at 7pm.
I passed around a purple notebook with photos I took throughout 2004 at the field and at meetings.
6. Program – no program this meeting.
7. Show and Tell
Nathaniel Rice showed a hand made transmitter warmer pouch that lets you fly outside in winter and still be able to control the plane and keep you hands warm. Chuck Paulson tried it out and was very impressed by how well it worked.
Sandy Jaffe show transmitter warmer pouch called a Trans-Mitt (clever name!). It also looked very nice but was slightly more expensive.
Sandy Jaffe also showed a new small electric helicopter called a Shogun. It weighs about 530 grams, uses a 3s1p 1500 mAh lithium-polymer battery pack at 11.1 nominal volts. It has a HiMax 2025-4200 electric motor (which turns at about 42,000 rpm!) and is fully capable of any 3D maneuvers. The price was $284 without servos and receiver.
8. 50/50 Drawing
The 50-50 raffle was again won by Curt Buergin, who split $29 with the club.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:23 pm.
-SCRC Winter Banquet-
We had our annual Winter Banquet on January 15, at the State College Elks Club near Boalsburg. This was a very successful event, as always! The food was great; a delicious buffet of steaks, barbecued chicken, baked potatoes, vegetable kabobs, salad, and desserts. About forty of us enjoyed the food and socializing. Several folks made frequent trips back and forth to the bar to check the score of the Steelers - Jets playoff game. What a nail biter!
After the meal, I gave out a few of the coveted “Crash and Burn” awards, which are given each year to those who did stupid or amazing things with their aircraft during the past year.
Following that festival of humiliation, we got to the good stuff!
Door prizes! These were awarded by pulling tickets from last year’s 50-50 raffles. Jon Polay’s son, Derek announced the winners’ names, and we picked prizes from an impressive array of high quality merchandise purchased with $200 from the SCRC treasury! I think everyone got something. I took home some Dremel tool accessories, an electronic organizer, a new hobby knife, and Sandy Jaffe gave me a pack of balsa which he won since none of his helicopters use any balsa. Thanks, Sandy!
There were prizes for the ladies as well, thanks to much effort by Diana Coder. Several decorative pillows and a beautiful hand-made afghan were among those goodies.
Many thanks go out to those who helped make this an enjoyable event. Al Jones organized the banquet with the Elks Club. Thanks, Al.
Will and Diana Coder made a monumental effort purchasing and wrapping all the door prizes. Thanks to both of you, and a special thanks to Diana for providing the ladies’ prizes. It’s great to give our wives a reward for tolerating our modeling obsessions all year!
Thanks again to everyone who made this banquet a good time for all!

-It’s YOUR newsletter-
As your Flite Lines editor, I often stare at a blank computer screen wondering what the heck I’m going to write about in this edition. Sure, I fly at the field, and go to some events, but I can’t be everywhere. I need your input! Please feel free to inform me of events you have gone to, and any flying field action I might have missed. Some other ideas are reports of what plane you have under construction, first flight reports, new products you’ve tried, etc. Give me a call or an e-mail, or flag me down at the meetings or at the field. I’ll give you credit in the newsletter for the info you supply. My goal is to make this a more informative and interesting newsletter. Thanks, guys!
