-The July Meeting-
July 5, 2005
The meeting was called to order by Pres. Jim Rhodes at 7 pm. There were 19 members present. The meeting was held on the front porch of the Central Pennsylvania Institute of Science and Technology due to stormy weather and the fact that we were locked out. The meeting was shorter than usual due to the conditions.
1. Minutes - The minutes of the June 7, 2005 meeting were approved as written.
2. Treasurer’s Report - Treasurer George Gurney reported that “We still have money”. The report was approved. He also presented 10 year Leader Club award patches for club members from the AMA and these were passed out at the meeting. Finally he also showed a 10 year plaque for the club from the AMA.
3. Old Business
· The Club Fun Fly will be held on Sunday 7/17/05 at the flying field. Jim Rhodes went through a checklist for the Fun Fly and got volunteers to handle all of the items. Thanks to Leo Lang, Eric Lysczek, Jim Rhodes, George Gurney, Al Jones, Nathaniel Rice and all others who volunteered to help make this a successful event.
· The Air Show will be held on Sunday 8/14/05 with general flying from noon – 2pm and then the Air Show proper from 2-4pm. Plans will be firmed up at the August meeting.
· Nathaniel Rice showed his map of the flying field areas and what the uses of the different areas should be.
· Al Jones and Nathaniel Rice have redone Air Show signs to help direct traffic to our flying field.
· Al Jones announced that he has nametags and booklets for new members.
4. New Business
· Leonard Grove, the owner of the land our flying field is on, passed away recently. The club sent flowers for the funeral and Brad Fisher reported that Jeff Favuzza spoke with his sons to see what might happen to the flying field. The sons said they would keep the house vacant as they live out of state but they may put a commercial storage facility on the land. They indicated we could continue using the flying field.
5. Program – there was no program.
6. Announcements
· On Sunday 7/17/05 the club will hold a fun fly for members only.
· On Sunday 8/14/05 the club will hold an air show for the public at the flying field.
7. 50/50 Drawing – Woody Struble split $24 with the club. The meeting was adjourned at 7:16 pm.
SCRC Fun Fly Picnic
Sunday, July 17 was another in a long line of hot, humid summer days this year. The sun was scorching, but under the club’s canopy it was relatively comfortable. A light breeze blew, and good food was quickly snapped up by SCRC members and families. Chef Jeff (Favuzza) served up excellent burgers and dogs. There was plenty of cold soda and water to quench the constant thirsts of the day, as well as free potato chips and Mrs. Gurney’s incredible chocolate sheet cake. That cake is good!
Plenty of flying went on throughout the afternoon. Sport, scale, helicopters, gliders, and Peter Spinks’ neat little YAK electric 3D ship were flown. The YAK uses an AXI outrunner motor only about the diameter of a quarter turning a 9” prop without gears! Very nice, and it sounds like a flying Dremel tool!
There were a couple of corn field landings, and Woody Struble’s Nieuport biplane took off with the ailerons reversed. Oops! No major damage, though.
The weather threatened a couple times as storm clouds passed by, but we got only a few drops of rain for a minute or so.
All in all, it was an enjoyable event in spite of the heat. Our thanks go to all who helped in any way to make it a fun day!
New Garden Air Show
Back on June 12, I attended a full scale air show at the New Garden Airport in Toughkenamon, Chester County. The show opened with the Alpha Squadron model air show team flying large scale (about 40%) Extra’s. Wow! It was hard to tell them from the real thing!
The featured act was Matt Chapman flying his full scale CAP 580, which looks just like the Great Planes model. He put it through its paces with graceful aerobatics, lightning quick rolls! Matt is an incredibly skilled pilot!
Some warbirds flew, too. A TBM Avenger and a Corsair were crowd pleasers, and provided a good history lesson for the younger viewers. The sight and sound of these birds is something worth preserving!
The Flying Farmer act was done to perfection, with a Piper Cub gyrating through some amazing maneuvers at almost no altitude or airspeed! I don’t think you could do that in any other design without crashing! The Cub was later landed on the “Teeny Weeny Airport”, which is a platform on top of a moving Ford pickup! Amazing!
My sons and my wife were there too, and we all had a great time!

That’s it for now. Remember, the August meeting is at the flying field.
