‑The September Meeting‑

The September meeting was held on September 2, at the Vo-Tech school, since the weather was once again crappy! There were 23 members present.

Some new members were present, including two youngsters whose names I didn't get, and Tim Frawley, who was in Lyle Long's Aerospace Engineering class which built R/C planes in the spring semester. Welcome, guys!

Jeff Favuzza reported having about twenty gallons of fuel for sale.

Woody Struble, Jon Polay, and Clair Jones attended the Wings Over Piper event for Piper Cub models. They said it was an enjoyable event.

Al Niessner, George Gurney, and Sandy Jaffe gave a flying demo at the Maranatha Church. That's the one beside our field.

New fence posts are needed for the orange safety fence we use at the air show. The fiberglass ones are splintering and failing badly. Woody is checking on getting new ones made of ½“ steel rebar.

Al Jones volunteered to take the SCRC gas grill for a year, relieving Harry Anderson of the task. Thank you, Al!

Clair Jones won the 50-50 raffle.

‑Show and Tell‑

Jon Polay showed us his neat new field box made from a large plastic rolling tool box purchased from Wal-Mart. Jon made a few simple modifications to accommodate his starter battery, power panel, etc. It works well, and rolling on wheels sure beats lugging all that stuff to the flight line! It costs about $30.   Nice!

Mitch Dunklebarger showed his first R/C plane, an electric Dusk Stick with clear covering and a seven cell NiMH battery. A week or so later I stopped by the field and saw Mitch flying it with Al Niessner's help on the trainer cord, and it flew great! Slow and easy – perfect for a beginner! The plane was already airborne when I arrived, and I chatted with Mitch's dad, Dave Dunklebarger (another Centre Hall boy) for about fifteen minutes till the Dusk Stick finally landed. Great job, Mitch!

‑Buzzard Field Fun Fly‑

I went to Buzzard Field on September 21 for their annual Fall Fun Fly. It was a beautiful day for flying and seeing some old friends. I flew my Uproar and my 12 year old Buzzard Bombshell electrics. Gotta have a Buzzard at that field! It was fun and relaxing.

‑The NEAT Fair‑

This is the biggie for R/C electrics of all types, and I always attend, but this year I missed it. The weather was predicted to be bad in Downsville, NY all weekend, and I had not planned to sell my motor mounts this year, so I stayed home. George Gurney went and reported that he saw six electric Ornithopters (flapping wing aircraft) in the air at the same time, looking like a flock of crows! There were a lot of 3D type aerobatic planes doing their amazing maneuvers, and some very small planes present. George saw a P-38 with only a twelve inch span, and another high wing plane with only a seven inch wingspan! Technology has shrunk radios, motors, and speed controls to amazingly small sizes! We could only dream about equipment like this a few years ago. I've flown electrics since 1975, and it has been a thrill watching the progress over time. One of these days I'll get a brushless system and mini radio and build something that goes straight up! Uh oh, your old editor is rambling again!

   That's all for this month.
