‑The August Meeting‑
The August meeting was held on Tuesday, August 6, at 7:00pm at the field. The weather was cool, which was a welcome relief after many days of searing heat and humidity. Seventeen members were present. We welcomed new members Paul Rupeka, and Brian Foose.
George Gurney reported that our June picnic netted a $43.96 profit.
Hugh Zinsmeister noted that the frequency board need some wedges along its legs to straighten its posture. (Editor's note: I noticed on Sunday that this has been done since the meeting).
Plans for our August 18 Air Show were firmed up. Jeff Favuzza volunteered to bring the food for the refreshment stand. I agreed to do the announcing once again, and other tasks were assigned. We decided to erect the safety fence at 8:00am Saturday morning. Starting time was set for 2:00pm.
Several SCRC members attended a jet rally in Lebanon the weekend before the meeting, and reported that the turbine-powered jets were fantastic! (Editor's note: Who will be the first SCRC member to get one?)
Check our web site for a great report complete with photos and video, thanks to Al Niessner and Jon Polay!
George Gurney reported on a Float Fly he attended while visiting in Illinois. He saw a Piper Cub model make a good water landing, then its radio locked up. It was last seen taxiing up the river, outrunning the trolling motor-powered retrieval boat!
‑SCRC Air Show‑
Well, we did it again – another successful Air Show! We had a very large crowd watching all types of aircraft perform in the hot August sun. There were only a couple of mishaps. Woody's flying Stop Sign went into the weeds at full bore. And Paul Bittengle's Soar Star decided to go to church a quarter mile away when the radio quit! The crowd pounded down all our food and drinks, and we had to get more to keep them happy!
Many thanks go out to all who helped make it happen. A special thanks goes to Jeff Combs, who acted as my “Gopher”, prompting each pilot to get ready to fly at the proper time. He made the show run smoothly! I owe Jeff an apology for spelling his mane wrong (Coombs) in last month's newsletter. Mike Songer's camera plane was a big hit, and he showed the videotape on a TV in his truck after the show. Jeff Favuzza's P-40 dropping bombs was cool, and he didn't hit anyone! I'm sorry I don't have room to mention each pilot, but they all did a great job! Thanks again, to all who helped!
After the show we were entertained by
Paul Bittengle's giant Mud Duck repeatedly waddling down the runway, attempting
to take off with insufficient power, and ending up on its back, with other
pilots chanting “quack, quack”!
Quack!
That's all for now. Let's fly!
