State College Radio Control Club Tuesday, January 4th 2011 Meeting Minutes

Ron Lueth called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM. John McQueary attended as a new Member. Welcome John!

·         The minutes from the December 7th meeting were approved.

·         Treasurer’s report. Al Jones reported $14 in total income since last month. He advised the balance of SCRC’s savings account and his report was approved by membership.

·         Old business –

Field Search Committee. Al Jones advised us of a new possibility, a privately owned grass airfield in McAlevys Fort, PA. The field is located about 14 miles south of State College on Route 26. The property owner no longer operates full-scale aircraft so the site is not being used at this time. Al is meeting with the owner at 3:00 on 1/7/2011 to discuss details and evaluate the site.

Indoor Flying Season. Rob Krankle advised that Insurance is in place to cover our planned OLV indoor dates, as well as for additional dates at OLV if they happen to become available. If additional indoor flying dates become available at Holuba Hall, insurance can be obtained. Leo Lang reported that we had 15 paying members at the OLV event on Sunday January 2nd.

Public Relations. Rob Krankle reported that Nittany Mall answered his e-mail message and they are interested in hosting an RC exhibition sometime in February. Rob will follow up with them and settle on a date.

SCRC Winter Banquet. Ron gave an update which included a menu conflict. Members voted to trade glazed carrots (picked at the last meeting) for salad bar availability. Cash bar will stay the same as we voted on at the last meeting. Cost will be $26.60 per plate which includes tax and gratuity. Ron will issue e-mail messages to members to obtain an approximate final headcount. Members can pay for themselves and guests at the banquet. Banquet scheduled for Saturday, January 22nd at 6:00 pm for social hour (7:00 for dinner). Celebration Hall is located at 2280 Commercial Boulevard, State College, PA.

·         Program –

Frank Mellot retired as a Navy Officer and Fighter Pilot about a year ago. Frank’s slide presentation featured Naval Air Station Lemoore in Kings and Fresno Counties in California. It is the Navy's largest master jet air station and is home to the Pacific Strike Fighter Wing. The primary aircraft based at NAS Lemoore is the F/A-18 Hornet and about half of the Navy’s entire strike force is based there. Frank gave us a good idea of what the air station to offer and what it takes to support the many various operations and facilities. He ended his presentation with video of Aircraft Carrier operations and information on the weapons capabilities of the Hornet. Thanks to Frank for putting together a very interesting informative program and sharing it with SCRC members!

·         Show and Tell –

Daryl Allen brought his nearly-finished R/C boat. It’s a Sterling kit of the Century Sea Maid runabout. The kit was available from the mid 1950’s to the mid ‘70s. The point of the build was keep to the plans (which took preference to glow power) and also to use all period-correct parts (except for radio gear). In an effort to make the mahogany hull strong enough for nitro, the boat is covered with fiberglass cloth on the exterior (completely-right over the stain and paint), and some ‘glassing was done at strategic points between the bottom and the floor. It has two coats of epoxy resin for the finish. Ron Lueth donated a new/old K&B 8011 .40 glow engine to the project. It’s age-appropriate to the kit and the marine conversion water-cooling head is still available.

Henry Loewen brought a bunch of useful hobby parts and tools and offered them free of charge to club members. A few of us latched on to items that we could not resist. Many thanks to Henry for his generosity!

·         The motion to adjourn passed at 8:30 pm.

Respectfully Submitted,

Daryl Allen, Secretary
