State College Radio Control Club Tuesday, September 1st, 2009 Meeting Minutes

Ron Lueth called the meeting to order at 7:05 PM. Lori Cowell from Monogram Centre was visiting.

  • The minutes from the August 4th meeting were approved.

  1. Treasurer’s report –

§  We received dues from Ed Crow, a new member. Al Jones advised that Packer’s sold about half of the food that was sold at last year’s air show. Packer’s donated $50 to SCRC. We had some income from Hat and shirt sales and we received $19.50 in donations. We donated $100 to the CAP for helping out with the air show. $90 was paid for porta-jon rental. The cost of field maintenance was paid. A motion was passed to roll over our savings CD for 9 months at 2.33% interest. Al advised the balance of SCRC’s account and his report was approved.

  1. Old business –

·         Field Search Committee. No new developments.

§  Review and critique of SCRC’s Annual Air Show of August 23, 2009.

Members discussed how to improve next year’s air show. Ideas included more advertising, using a Comcast advertisement and a face book web page. We should improve the roadside signs and get the donation buckets set up earlier. We could plan more full-scale aircraft activity by asking EAA members for assistance. We should draw up a plan for setting up tents, fences and tables. All planning should be done by the end of April while making sure that we select the best date for the event. We should go back to using a runner to remind pilots of when to be ready at the flight line to help close gaps in the action. We’ve had positive feedback from Central Keystone Hobbies who had a booth at our air show.

  1. New business –

§  We need still pictures of the air show. If you have some good shots, please forward the files to Al Niessner.  Also, if you know of any air show videos being posted, please let us know.

§  Rob Krankel proposed hosting an indoor Fun Fly event at one of the Penn State facilities. Having experienced the fees that the University charges, some members suggested that students may have better success by planning the event as an activity and possibly obtain space for free or a more reasonable rate.

§  Lori Cowell of Monogram Centre offered to sell her stock of SCRC hats and shirts to the club for less than half of what was charged last year. There are 34 hats and a dozen shirts amounting to $624 at the original price. Lori would like to sell the lot for $262, a $362 savings. Members agreed to vote on this at the next meeting.

·         Central Keystone Hobbies (27 W. Central Avenue, Avis, PA 17721, (570) 753-5550) is hosting an Open House on September 19th from 10:00am to 2:00pm. There will be hot dogs and other snacks. They are offering a 15% discount on in-store items for that day. For a map of their location, visit:  http://www.centralkeystonetrains.com/810933.html

·         Al Jones motioned to appoint A.J. Jaffe as a club flight instructor for RC Helicopters. Motion carried.

·         For club meetings, Mark Wharton advised that he still has access to Room 308 in the Hammond building on the Penn State campus. This is the same room that we used several times earlier in the year. As the September meeting will be the last outdoor meeting held at the flying field, a motion to move our October meeting place to the Hammond building was passed. This covers the October meeting only and we will discuss options for other locations at that time. Please remember that next month’s meeting will be in room 308 in the Hammond building!

  1. Program – no program.

  1. Show and Tell –

§  Rob Krankel showed his Fury 3D ARF by New Power. The Fury is a 44” span model with lightweight wooden airframe, a very appealing trim scheme and Park 400 motor. Rob performed the maiden flight after the meeting in near darkness and indications are that that the Fury will be an excellent performer.

§  Sam Stitzer brought his kit built, electric-powered, nearly finished Swaneyshouse Primo 15 3D profile model. He received the kit and parts to finish the project as gifts from family members. The Primo is recommended for advanced flyers and if you’ve seen Mike Stitzer fly his Primo 40, you know that this design is capable of just about any maneuver.

The motion to adjourn passed at 8:00. No 50/50 drawing.

Respectfully Submitted,

Daryl Allen, Secretary
