State College Radio Control Club Tuesday, August 4th, 2009 Meeting Minutes

Ron Lueth called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM. Welcome back to George Mock who has re-joined the club!

  1. The minutes from the July 7th meeting were approved by membership
  2. Treasurer’s report. Field maintenance for the summer (through August) was paid. Al Jones advised the balance of SCRC’s account and his report was approved.

  1. Old business –

·         Field Search Committee. No new developments.

§         SCRC’s Annual Air Show – Sunday, August 23rd

o        Todd Cook advised that the sign-up for pilot participation is going well. Roy Long asked that we count on the Civil Air Patrol to help with parking and perform their flag ceremony.  Bernie of Nittany Line Hobbies has not been responsive to the idea of maintaining a booth but Mike from Central Keystone Trains and Hobbies may be interested. Ron will check with another hobby store to see if they might participate. Al Jones advised the cost ($85-$90 each) of Porta-Jon rental from two different providers. The members decided to go for just one unit and let Al decide which vendor to use.

o        Bob Grove will not be available on the 23rd so it’s doubtful that we can coordinate any full-scale events. Set up time is scheduled for 8:00 am on Saturday August 22nd. Please come out to the field and help if you can! Bob Booz offered to use his pick-up truck to set up the signs by 9:00 am on Sunday. Ron is bringing his large canopy so we’ll have two main tents. Mark Wharton confirmed that he and his son, Chris will be taking care of the sound system.

  1. New business –

§         A motion passed to reinforce the safety rule regarding the use of “tie downs” or “restraints”. All model airplanes with internal combustion engines must be restrained by mechanical means or with the help of a human assistant during the start-up procedure. This rule does not apply to any helicopter or any electric-powered model.

§         A motion carried to discontinue the use of the red barrels on the runway to mark no-fly zones. While staying aware of noise issues and being considerate of our neighbors, members are now required to use “common sense” when flying their patterns.

§         We wish to remind members that a highly visible channel number “flag” or “tag” should be attached to your transmitter antenna. We’ve had some issues with people leaving the field with their AMA card still in a frequency board slot - and no one is absolutely sure if that channel is in use or not.

·         The Wings of Williamsport R/C Club’s 7th annual “Wings over Piper” event will take place this coming weekend, August 7th through the 9th. This is a great event. For more information, visit: http://www.wingsoverpiper.com/

·         The National Association of Rocketry Annual Meet (NARAM) is the NAR's annual model rocketry championship. This is the big meet. NAR members from around the world gather for a week-long reunion. The NARAM-51 event will be held August 8-14, 2009 near Johnstown, Pennsylvania. There are numerous activities that run day and night. For information, here’s a great website to visit: http://www.psc473.org/naram51/

§         Malcolm Morrison contacted SCRC to ask that members participate in the EAA’s Aviation Awareness Day at University Park Airport in State College this Saturday (August 8th) by hosting a static display of model aircraft. The event begins at 8:00 am and goes until noon. AL Niessner will be there and George Gurney will bring a tent. Mr. Morrison may help our club with our air show by arranging full-scale flyovers or visits from EAA members so please help out with Aviation Awareness Day if you can. For information, directions and list of activities, visit: http://www.eaa1327.org/awareness_day.html

  1. Program – no program.
  2. Show and Tell – none

·         The motion to adjourn passed at 7:50. Hugh Zinsmeister won the 50/50 drawing splitting $12.00 with the club.

Respectfully Submitted,

Daryl Allen, Secretary
