State College Radio Control Club Tuesday, April 7th, 2009 Meeting Minutes

Ron Lueth called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM. Penn State students Jarred Sheer and Robert Krankle were in attendance as guests. Bob Booz joined as an associate member. Welcome, all!

  1. Program

·         Ron introduced our guest speaker, Ben Soltis. He is now a Penn State student but until recently, Ben was in the Air Force operating the Predator UAV aircraft overseas. His presentation included a slideshow hi-lighting some the Predator’s specifications. The program also featured video clips of actual combat situations demonstrating the Predator’s reconnaissance, remote targeting and missile deployment capabilities. Ben answered questions from an interested audience. His presentation was both entertaining and informative and was well received and much appreciated by all in attendance. Our thanks to Ben Soltis - and also to Al Niessner for setting this up!

  1. The minutes from the March 3rd meeting were approved.

  1. Al Jones read the Treasurer’s report. Two new members have paid their dues for 2009. Expenses since last meeting included $14.46 in postage. Al advised the balance of SCRC’s account and the Treasurer’s report was approved.

  1. Old business –

·         The field search committee had nothing new to report on the status of the Oak Hall area and Whitehall Road parklands projects.

·         Last month, Al Jones re-submitted our annual Gold Leader Club application to the AMA after filling in some of the blanks. Thanks to Al, SCRC has retained our AMA Gold Leader status.

·         Al Jones forwarded a copy of SCRC’s bylaws and other club information to Mr. Walker who is interested in reviving the Phillipsburg R/C Club.

·         As discussed last month, Al Niessner submitted a course proposal to OLLI (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute). Currently, there is no news of acceptance or enrollment of students into our proposed basic R/C aircraft course.

·         Al Jones had printed rosters with membership contact information available to members in attendance and he informed us of the $60 liability insurance premium paid to the AMA to cover Jack Grabrick’s property.

·         Al Jones had AMA brochures explaining the organization’s services for members and also a CD providing membership service information. Al advised that AMA does a good job of presenting it’s services on-line at:  http://www.modelaircraft.org/membership/membership.aspx

5.       New Business –

·         The Frequent-C Flyers Club of Clearfield, PA is now inactive due to problems with their flying field.

·         The Wings of Williamsport Radio Control Modelers will host their 1st Annual Spring Open House/Flying Showcase on Saturday, May 30th (11:00 to 4:00) and Sunday the 31st (11:00 to 3:00). It’s open to all AMA members wishing to fly any type of model aircraft. It’s also open to the general public with concessions available on both days and primitive camping on-site.
