State College Radio Control Club Tuesday, October 6th, 2009 Meeting Minutes

Ron Lueth called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM. No guests or new members were present.

  • The minutes from the September 1st meeting were approved.

  1. Treasurer’s report –

§  We received dues from two new members. Expenses included $8.00 for copying documents. Al Jones rolled over our savings CD for a 9-month period. Al advised the balance of SCRC’s account and his report was approved.

  1. Old business –

·         Field Search Committee. No new developments.

·         Last month, Al Jones’s motion to appoint A.J. Jaffe as R/C helicopter flight instructor was approved. This month, A.J. was present at the meeting and received his SCRC instructor’s badge. Congratulations, A.J.!

§  Rob Krankel had no new leads on a location to host an indoor Fun Fly event on the Penn State campus. Rob and A.J. Jaffe will look in to the possibility of reviving interest among students. Ron Lueth asked all members to keep their eyes open for local indoor flying opportunities.

·         Central Keystone Hobbies in Avis hosted an Open House on September 19th and several SCRC members attended and took advantage of the 15% discount. Store owners Mike and Robin sent Spectrum t-shirts as door prizes. Todd Cook and Al Niessner received their shirts. Daryl Allen is holding two more shirts for Brad Fisher and Paul Bittengle. As a side note, both Nittany Line Hobby stores are now closed but Bernie intends to reopen soon at a new location.

  1. New business –

·         Due to a shortage of funds and the fact that we still have 18 hats and one shirt, members voted against purchasing Monogram Centre’s remaining stock of SCRC hats and shirts. Instead, SCRC will invite Lori to sell the stock at club events. If she cannot attend, a club member will pick up the items from Monogram Centre and display them for sale during events. Last month, Lori brought the items to our meeting and offered to sell her remaining stock for less than half of what was charged last year. There are 34 hats and a dozen shirts amounting to $624 at original prices but are now reduced to $262 for the lot. The items will be returned to Lori Cowell.

·         Al Jones motioned to lower the price of our SCRC iron-on shirt patches to $2.00. Al still has a few of these left so please contact him if you wish to buy an SCRC transfer patch at the new lower price.

·         As former club president, Chuck Paulson will chair the nomination committee for the 2010 SCRC officer election. Al Jones volunteered to help Chuck and Ron will appoint one more person to the committee. We should have a slate of officer candidates for the next meeting and voting will take place at the December meeting.

·         Ron reminded us that the KIEF event (Keystone Indoor Electric Fly) will take place on October 16th, 17th and 18th at the Muncy Sports Dome near Williamsport. A.J. Jaffe advised that Saturday the 17th would be the best day to attend and see competition-level indoor R/C fliers from around the world. For event schedules, driving directions and other information, visit the website at: http://www.pafunfly.com/

·         Al Jones pointed out that Nathaniel Rice’s name is listed in the October issue of Model Aviation magazine. In an article covering the Extreme Flight Championships at AMA headquarters, Nathaniel is shown as placing 17th in the helicopter category. Congratulations Nathaniel!

·         Hugh Zinsmeister brought copies of the 2010 AMA Safety Code and passed them around. Because we fly models at an airport this is especially important so if you haven’t had the opportunity to read this document, you can access the information at: http://www.modelaircraft.org/files/safetycode2010.pdf

·         Members voted to move our meeting place for the November meeting to the Our Lady of Victory Catholic School. The school is located at 800 Westerly Parkway in State College. Joe Wieber is a church member and has booked us a room for the November 3rd meeting. The school charges $25 for the use of the classroom. When we meet there, we will investigate utilizing gym/auditorium for future indoor flying activities. The charge for using the gym is $20 per hour. Al Niessner advised the Christian Alliance Church charges $30-$40 per hour for a smaller space. Al Jones will gather details for two of our former meeting places (the Central Pa. Institute of Science & Technology and the American Legion) and advise the results at the next meeting.

·         John Werner brought a DVD that he obtained from Maynard Hill. Maynard holds world records for R/C airplane altitude, distance and duration flights. He even flew a model from Newfoundland to Ireland on a 38-hour, 1900-mile trans-Atlantic flight. The movie highlights the accomplishments of this life-long modeler and runs for about 70 minutes. The viewing of the DVD may make a good SCRC program for a future meeting or (upon receiving Mr. Hill’s permission) Ron may post the video on our RC Groups website so members can view it.

  1. Program – no program.

  1. Show and Tell –

§  Rob Krankel brought along his E-flite Blade mSR electric micro helicopter and gave a flight demonstration. This new model weighs less than one ounce and features a tail rotor and a rotor head design that allows the use of a single main rotor. This gives the mSR a speed advantage over the coaxial twin rotor Blade mCX and offers more realistic flight characteristics.

The motion to adjourn passed at 8:30 pm. Sandy Jaffe won the 50/50 drawing splitting $15.00 with the club.

Respectfully Submitted,

Daryl Allen, Secretary
