|Nutritional approach* is based on the statement that adding certain amino acids and vitamins to the diet can relieve the depression by restoring the balance of the amines in the brain. This process is known as precursor loading and is the basis for the treatment program. This therapy has far greater safety than conventional antidepressant therapy.|
Nutritional approach gives a dietary technique that includes supplementary amino acids which produce an increase in certain brain amines, "support" supplements, chiefly vitamins and minerals, that go along with the treatment.
The basic supplements are the amino acids L-tyrosine and L-tryptophan,
vitamin B complex, vitamin C and a multivitamin minerals. Tryptophan is carried into the brain, where it is converted into serotonin. Two neurotransmitters, norepinephrine and dopamine, can be derived from tyrosine and phenylalanine. Vitamines and minerals are coenzymes which are necessary for creating this chemical changes, pancreating enzyms are also necessary.
The nutrition program has agjustments for special circumstances, such as taking antidepressants, having certain medical conditions. Program also has modification for the assotiated predominant symptomssuch asinsomnia, agitation, irritability, memory and concentration problems, and etc.
Eating more protein helps increase the levels of these amino acids in the brain. The best food sources are meats, eggs and dairy products. However, food sources alone will not provide the pure forms and quantities necessary for correcting low moods and depression.
Response to the treatment: Some people respond dramatically and immediatle, or it may involve several months of gradual improvement. Usually people who suffered from severe depression continue the treatment for six to eight months after they feel well. Then gradually taper off. Some people have to stay on minimum gozage indefinetely.
