K-16 Outreach
As a former school library media specialist and
children’s librarian, I believe that information literacy is at the heart of
creating a student-focused library, as these are the integral lifelong learning
skills that students need to be efficient, self-assured information consumers.I have worked to foster K-16 collaboration locally, co-founding the Central Pennsylvania K-16 Information Literacy Network in 2004. This collective encourages discussion and collaboration between area K-12, public and academic librarians. Since establishing the Network, we have presented three (soon to be four!) information literacy focused workshops for over 40 area librarians, and have established an email-based discussion list and a Web site filled with information on K-16 resources and workshop materials.
After four years of sustained activity, the Central Pennsylvania K-16 Information Literacy Network has established a community of area school, public and academic librarians. The group continues to grow, and remains one of the only Networks of its' kind in the United States.
