Good to see you blogging! This is alot to comment on so I will summarize that I think there isn't much "free" out there in technology tools, since even the most free things take time (and work time or effort is money).

I think it is very important to embrace those technologies that work, so it is great to hear about the best ones - Like Bibliocommons

- John Meier

Alas, once this dood-dad's been in your toolbar for more than a few minutes, typing in a search yields an annoying "connection timed out" message. Nevertheless...it got me in the CAT!

- Anne

I think the LIAS-VPN is there specifically so that you don't have to authenticate into individual databases. I just tried it from home, and it worked nicely for me!

- Ellysa

J--I agree...I think we should try this kind of format...it was be different for us...so I think having some kind of context and forum for discussion would be critical.

- EmilyR

Being the newest newbie posting a response so far, I didn't know there WAS an in-service day. The project is designed to go relatively self paced but with weekly Milestones. Do you think that format would work in the PSULibrary environment? Many things seem more formal here, but I think if something is introduced in a few forums and the PRIZES are mentioned, individuals will self-motivate.

- John Meier

I think it's a great idea too! We might want to change the 23 things somewhat for what's most important in our environment. And I think we should buy these to give to anyone who successfully completes the program: http://librarianinblack.typepad.com/librarianinblack/2007/07/change-agent-ba.html

It would be nice if we could formalize this as a professional development activity in collaboration with another entity (HR?) here in the Libraries.

- E

So, I read through this more and I think it could be really awesome! Instead of just talking about what a blog/rss/etc it's TEACHING through the process itself. What a crazy idea! :)

Hi, Emily! Brian attends a really cool IT conference in Colorado that uses the Open Space method. It's something to consider when it comes to conferences.

The conference he attends is listed here:
http://www.mindview.net/Conferences/ProgrammingTheNewWeb

Wikipedia on the methodology:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_Space_Technology

I haven't experienced it myself, but Brian really enjoyed it. =)

- Michelle
