lolbrarian

Thanks to Chris Stubbs for turning me on to the lol* phenomenon...I'm addicted now. Along the way, found that there's such thing as lolbrarian.
Since lolcats are so popular, I should not be surprised that lolbrarians exist...everyone knows that cats and librarians go hand in hand.

Experiments with VPN II

Just found out that LIAS-VPN connection should let you get to the libraries' server from home. I don't know how to map it from my mac (being a newbie and all), so I'll have to do further reconnaissance on that...stay tuned.

Experiments with VPN

OK, I finally tried some things with the PSU VPN today that were rumored to be possible, but not verified:

1) Wireless in the tower...it DOES exist...signal strength isn't great, but it works
2) VPN at home, does indeed make "Get It! @ PSU" links appear in Google Scholar
3) Tried using the LIAS-VPN connection to get to our intranet--does NOT work, still get the friendly verboten message in big bold letters

One question left... what is the LIAS-VPN connection intended for? Does anyone know?

Feature Coveting

OK, we already know that Ryerson University Libraries must be a cool place just from their slick Facebook app. Now, I've noticed that you can text yourself the title, location and call number of anything in their catalog. How cool is that? You just find what you want, click the little "send via text message" icon that appears in the record and off you go. Seems really handy!
I do have one concern about this...what happens to the cell phone number that I enter into this site? Is it being stored, erased, or what? A little note about that would be helpful.
Kudos Ryerson, you're ok in my book...even if you do spell catalog with extra letters.

Web 2.0 Chicken or Egg

As other folks try and hash out the idea of a 2.0 Librarian spectrum, I'm trying to figure out what comes first in a community: web 2.0 tools or the web 2.0 attitude. I've been reading a lot lately about how web 2.0 is more than just a bunch of tools--it is the attitude of transparency, collaboration, participation, and openness (see this for example). I've totally bought the farm on the attitude thing.
But, I struggle with how to best get the idea about the attitude out to the masses. By now, a good chunk of people know what a wiki, blog, podcast is, so showing people what these tools can do for them is a good way to intro web 2.0 stuff. However, it's not the complete picture when it comes to web 2.0. They may "get" the tools, but not the attitude part, which is key.
Is it better then to approach this situation from the attitude side first? That seems much more but more holistic to me, but more daunting...I mean we're talking culture change here.

So, which comes first: web 2.0 tools or web 2.0 attitude?
