LING 404 Fall 2007

The original course was Linguistics 404: Phonology I. Please click the Syllabus link on the right to see an overview of the course.

In case you get stuck with the Lardil data set - remember the following

A. Your analysis must accurately predict what changes and what does NOT change. If you have many "problem forms", then your analysis is likely incorrect.

B. Common problems are

* Environment not defined correctly
* Change of rule direction is wrong
* You may not have accounted for "neutralization"

In Group A forms

The non-future form for "woman" should be
pirŋenin, not *pirŋen

Due Date – Wed, December 19th, 4PM
This is also the latest time to turn in late homework and surveys/extra credit.

How to Turn in Exam:

• Deliver to cubicle in Education Technology Services (an envelope will be available)

210 Rider II (on corner of Burrowes & Beaver)

On White Loop, first stop after College Ave. - just cross street
Education Technology Services across from elevator on 2nd floor.

Hours: M-F, 8PM - 5PM; otherwise doors are locked

Contacting Instructor

The handouts and assignments are updated up to last Tuesday (Nov 13). The ones for tomorrow will appear after class.

As stated in the syllabus, the final exam will be a take-home exam. It will be handed out the last day of class day, and due Wed Dec 19 at 4 PM (either turned in at my office, e-mailed or faxed).

There will be more details as we get closer to the end of the semester.

The due date for Assingment 8 on syllable structure will be next week, Nov 15 as normal. The assignment after that will be due after Thanksgiving.

I apologize for the additional confusion.

Today's office hours (M: 405) are cancelled due to a scheduling conflict. See you in class.

One rule in the second part of assignment 5 does not have an environment specified. This means that the change happens everywhere. In rule notation, this means you write the rule without the environment.

For instance, the English diphthongization of /e/ to [ej] is written as

e → ej or "e --> ej"
