Dear Colleague,

On behalf of the Conference Organising Committee, we would like to inform you of the:

FOURTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON THE ARTS IN SOCIETY
28-31 July 2009
Venice, Italy

The International Conference on the Arts in Society and the International Journal of the Arts in Society provide an intellectual platform for the arts and art practices, and enable an interdisciplinary conversation on the role of the arts in society. They are intended as a place for critical engagement, examination and experimentation of ideas that connect the arts to their contexts in the world -  in studios and classrooms, in galleries and museums, on stage, on the streets and in communities.

The 2009 Arts Conference will coincide with the Venice Biennale, and will be held in conjunction with featured exhibitions and programs.  The occasion of the Venice Biennale provides an opportunity for the Conference to serve as a node in the larger phenomenon of fairs, festivals, and their networks.   As such, the Arts Conference aims to discover what values, instincts and common ground may exist within the arts and their practices and sites of reception around the world. Your participation shapes the Conference itself.

The theme of this year's Conference is Art and Transnationalism. It focuses dialogue on the arts and art practices that may be situated within the context of international art expositions, festivals and biennials which are engaged with the transnational production of art and its global distribution networks. The scope is deliberately broad and ambitious. Our times demand nothing less than interdisciplinary and holistic approaches. The breadth of the Conference and the Journal, however, are without prejudice to finely grained discussion of specific, local and grounded practices.

Plenary speakers include:
* Judy Chicago, Artist, Author, Educator.  Founder, first feminist art program in the USA (1971), and co-founder of CalArts Feminist Art Program.  Her groundbreaking work, "The Dinner Party," is now part of the permanent collections of the Brooklyn Musem and its new Elizabeth Sackler Center for Feminist Art.
* Dr. Tomasz Wendlund, Artist; Director, MEDIATIONS Biennale, Poland; Lecturer, Sommer Akademie in Rheinau, Switzerland.
* Barbara Fischer, Faculty, Curatorial Studies, University of Toronto, Canada; Curator for Mark Lewis at the Canada Pavilion for the 53rd Venice Biennale in 2009.
* Aaron Levy,  Founding Director of Slought Foundation, Philadelphia, USA; Curator, "Into the Open: Positioning Practice," for the
US Pavilion of the Venice Bienale's 11th Architecture Exhibition, 2009.
* Dr. Nancy Mithlo, Faculty, Art History and American Indian Studies, University of Wisconsin, Madison; Curator/Co-Founder of numerous Native American exhibitions and projects to create a presence at the Venice Bienale, from 1999-2009; Co-Curator of "Requickening" Project with the University of Venice.

Please continue to visit the Conference website as additional plenary speakers are added to the Conference program.

In addition, the Arts Conference will also include numerous individual paper, workshop and colloquium presentations by artists/practitioners, teachers and researchers. We invite you to respond to the Conference Call for Papers.  Presenters may choose to submit written papers for publication in the fully refereed International Journal of the Arts in Society.  If you are unable to attend the Conference in person, virtual registration options are also available which allow you to submit a paper for possible publication in the Journal.

Whether you are a virtual or in-person presenter at this Conference, we also encourage you to present on the Conference YouTube Channel. Please select the Online Sessions link on the Conference website for further details.

The deadline for the next round in the call for papers (a title and short abstract) is 12 March 2009.  Future deadlines will be announced on the Conference website after this date.  Proposals are reviewed within two weeks of submission. Full details of the Conference, including an online proposal submission form, are to be found at the Conference website - http://www.Arts-Conference.com/.

We look forward to receiving your proposal and hope that you will be able to join us in Venice in July 2009.

Yours sincerely,

Tressa Berman, Ph.D.

CALL FOR CASES
Proposal Submission Deadline: March 15, 2009
Full Case Submission Deadline: June 15, 2009
Cases on Adoption, Diffusion and Evaluation of Global E-Governance Systems:
Impact at the Grass Roots
A book edited by Dr. Hakikur Rahman, ICMS, Bangladesh

To be published by IGI Global: http://www.igi-global.com/requests/details.asp?ID=598

This publication is part of the Advances in Electronic Government Research (AEGR) Book Series found at http://www.igi-global.com/aegr

Introduction
Generally, e-government refers to the use of new ICTs by governments applied to the full range of government functions. In a broad sense, e-government is the use of information technology to provide citizens and organizations with more convenient access to government information and services, and offer delivery of public services to citizens, business partners, and others who are working in the public sector. E-governance is a network of organizations to incorporate government, non-government, profit, nonprofit, not-for-profit and private sector entities. In e-governance there are no distinct boundaries. The model for e-governance could be a one-stop portal, where citizens have access to a variety of information and services.

Overall Objective of the Book
Most of the e-government systems at the early stages are being built to exactly mimic the age-old conventional systems, and virtually computerize the traditional methods and procedures. Electronic solutions are merely implanted into government offices without looking into the transformational aspects (mental, organizational, physical, logical, cultural, working style, etc.) and are not providing the entire eco-system for long-term sustenance. This book will accommodate cases related to theories, issues and methodologies for designing, implementing and operating successful e-government systems. This book will cover a variety of services and applications across the globe that have been improving the overall governance of nations and economies. This book will be concise in synthesizing the theoretical analysis, focus more to pragmatic implementations, and emphasize on effective e-government systems for better implementation at the grass roots.

Target Audience
Being a casebook on e-government, this book will try to cover other aspects of the e-society, such as e-learning, e-business, e-procurement, e-commerce, e-payment, e-health, e-democracy, e-voting, e-police, and other e-applications and e-services. Therefore, this book will be useful to development partners, policy makers, government and non-government staffs, knowledge managers, researchers, academics and individuals.

Recommended topics for case studies include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Laws, jurisdictions, policy matters related to e-government
- Benchmarking of e-government system
- Designing of e-government systems
- Adoption of appropriate solutions and utilities
- Assessment of e-government policies and systems
- Comprehensive analysis of e-government implementations
- Performance and effectiveness measurement of e-government systems
- Incorporation of decision supports tools
- Learning and Knowledge development
- Economic empowerment, Social empowerment, and Sustainable development

Trauma and Mothering

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
At last fall's Association for Research on Mothering conference on "Mothering, Violence, Militarism, War and Social Justice," Lisa Chiu shared her responses to the plight of Mariane Pearl while Chiu covered Daniel Pearl's murder in early 2002. (Like Mariane, Chiu was a pregnant journalist at the time of Daniel's death.) After that presentation, some conference attendees got into a conversation about how 9/11 had impacted their feelings about being mothers, what it took to deal with those feelings, and what that might mean about us as mothers.

It is personal stories from those closely impacted by such events that most interest us for this collection.

For instance, if you or a close friend or family member was in New York City on 9/11, we would like you to reflect on what impact that experience had on your emotions about your mothering and, most likely, thereby the act of mothering itself. Or perhaps your experience relates to some other globally significant traumatic event, such as one of the following (which are just provided as ideas):

- the earthquake in China in May
- the volcanic eruption in Chile in May
- the Russian forces in Georgia in August
- the terrorist attacks in India in November
- the cholera epidemic in Zimbabwe in late 2008
- the fighting in Iraq or Afghanistan or Kenya or the Congo (or so many other places) in recent years
- the land disputes between First Nations and the Canadian government, in 1990 and 1995 and today
- the AIDS epidemics in Africa
- Hurricane Katrina
- the terrorist attacks in London in 2005
- the tsunami in Southeast Asia at the end of 2004
- one of the global SARS outbreaks in 2002 and 2003

If you know someone whose experience you think merits inclusion, please pass this call along. We hope to get as diverse a selection of perspectives as possible, and we are willing to consider less personal pieces in order to accomplish that (studies or interviews conducted by someone less personally impacted by the event, for instance). Please keep to the focus of the emotional impact on mothering; beyond that, narrative, theoretical, and combinations of both approaches to the topic are welcome.

1-2 page abstracts; mail, e-mail, and telephone contact information; and a 1-page CV due 1 May 2009 to burstrem@email.arizona.edu; please put "Trauma and Mothering" in the subject line.

Full essays, 4500-6000 words in length, will be due 1 December 2009. We reserve the right to decline any submission at any point, even after requesting the full essay based on the abstract or after receiving sought revisions.

The International ACM Conference on Management of Emergent Digital
EcoSystems (MEDES 2009)
Technically sponsored by both ACM SIGAPP and ACM SIGAPP.fr Chapter
with the cooperation of IFIP WG 2.6
                                http://sigappfr.acm.org/medes
                                     October 27-30, 2009
                                        Lyon - France

Description and Objectives
---------------------------
In the world of the Internet, the rapid growth and exponential use of
digital medias leads to the emergence of
virtual environments namely digital ecosystems composed of multiple
and independent entities such as individuals,
organizations, services, software and applications sharing one or
several missions and focusing on the interactions
and inter-relationships among them. The digital ecosystem exhibits
self-organizing environments, thanks to the
re-combination and evolution of its ?digital components?, in which
resources provided by each entity are properly
conserved, managed and used. The underlying resources mainly
comprehend data management, innovative services,
computational intelligence and self-organizing platforms. Due to the
multi-disciplinary nature of digital ecosystems and their
characteristics, they are highly complex to study and design. This
also leads to a poor understanding as to how managing resources will
empower digital ecosystems to be innovative and value-creating. The
application of Information Technologies has the potential to enable
the understanding of how entities request resources and ultimately
interact to create benefits and added-values, impacting business
practices and knowledge. These technologies can be improved through
novel techniques, models and methodologies for fields such as data
management, web technologies, networking, security, human-computer
interactions, artificial intelligence, e-services and self-organizing
systems to support the establishment of digital ecosystems and manage
their resources.
The International Conference on Management of Emergent Digital
EcoSystems (EDES) aims to develop and bring together
a diverse community from academia, research laboratories and industry
interested in exploring the manifold challenges
and issues related to resource management of Digital Ecosystems and
how current approaches and technologies can be
evolved and adapted to this end. The conference seeks related original
research papers, industrial papers and proposals
for demonstrations, and tutorials and workshops.

Paper Submission
----------------
Submissions must be in an electronic form as PDF format and should be
uploaded using the conference website.
Submissions should be at most 8 ACM single-space printed pages. Papers
that fail to comply with length limit
will be rejected. Submissions will be peer-reviewed by at least 3 peer
reviewers. Selection criteria will
include: relevance, significance, impact, originality, technical
soundness, and quality of presentation.
Preference will be given to submissions that take strong or
challenging positions on important emergent topics
related to Digital Ecosystems. At least one author should attend the
conference to present the paper.
The conference Proceedings will be published by ACM and indexed by the
ACM Digital Library.

Porn Cultures: Regulation, Political Economy, and Technology

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
The Centre for International Communication Research (CICR) the Media
Industries Research Centre (MIRC) and the Institute of Communications
Studies at the University of Leeds are inviting you to a conference on

Porn Cultures: Regulation, Political Economy, and Technology Monday 15th and
Tuesday 16th of June in Leeds.

The pornography industry is an under-researched culture industry. Its links
to mainstream media and to the sex industry are intensifying. The
mainstreaming of certain aspects of the industry in global popular culture
raises questions about the adequacy, efficiency or appropriateness of
existing policy. Other aspects of the industry, such as its labour
conditions, its geographies of production and consumption practices
associated with it have largely fallen under the radar of scholarly
analysis, while much more attention has been paid to the potential for
emancipatory uses of aspects of sexually explicit cultural expression.

Meanwhile, technological aspects of the industry's operation are challenging
our assumptions about 'choice' 'privacy' and 'freedom'. With the
proliferation of the pornographic product embedded in everyday life now more
than ever before existing and new questions require our urgent attention
about human rights, migrants, workers and communication rights, media
literacy, media ecology and the public sphere, global production and
consumption cultures as well as underlying politics of gender, class and
'race'.

This conference aims to bring together scholars, policymakers and activists
to discuss the global pornography complex. It is the second of two
conferences organised within the British Academy funded project
Socialisation of the global sexually explicit imagery: challenges to
regulation and research. The project has given birth to an international
Porn Cultures and Policy Network, which involves scholars from a number of
countries, engaged in comparative studies with an emphasis on policy. We are
inviting colleagues to take part in this debate and colleagues who would be
interested in working with the existing network to join us. Information on
this and our first conference can be found on http://sgsei.wordpress.com.

Please send your 200 word abstract, along with a 50-word bio and contact
details to Steven McDermott (cssem@leeds.ac.uk) by March 15th or earlier.

There will be a small fee to cover catering and room facilities. Please let
us know if you require an earlier decision regarding your paper. If you
would like to discuss a panel/round-table proposal and /or your paper please
contact Katharine Sarikakis (K.Sarikakis@leeds.ac.uk).

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

Dear Colleague,

The Journal of Educational Administration and Policy Studies (JEAPS) is a multidisciplinary peer-reviewed journal published that will be monthly by Academic Journals (http://www.academicjournals.org/JEAPS). JEAPS is dedicated to increasing the depth of the subject across disciplines with the ultimate aim of expanding knowledge of the subject.

Editors and reviewers

JEAPS is seeking qualified researchers to join its editorial team as editors, subeditors or reviewers. Kindly send your resume to JEAPS@acadjourn.org

 Call for Papers

JEAPS will cover all areas of the subject. The journal welcomes the submission of manuscripts that meet the general criteria of significance and scientific excellence, and will publish:

·       Original articles in basic and applied research

·       Case studies

·       Critical reviews, surveys, opinions, commentaries and essays

We invite you to submit your manuscript(s) to JEAPS@acadjourn.org for publication in the Maiden Issue (April 2009). Our objective is to inform authors of the decision on their manuscript(s) within four weeks of submission. Following acceptance, a paper will normally be published in the next issue. Instruction for authors and other details are available on our website; http://www.academicjournals.org/JEAPS/Instruction.htm

JEAPS is an Open Access Journal

One key request of researchers across the world is unrestricted access to research publications. Open access gives a worldwide audience larger than that of any subscription-based journal and thus increases the visibility and impact of published works. It also enhances indexing, retrieval power and eliminates the need for permissions to reproduce and distribute content. JEAPS is fully committed to the Open Access Initiative and will provide free access to all articles as soon as they are published.

Best regards,

Bazim Adigwerex

Forum 2009 will also accept a limited number of poster session proposals. For projects that will still be in preliminary development in October 2009, we recommend presentations at a lightning talk or other "un-conference"-like activities for which time will be reserved at Forum. A call for these types of presentations and discussions will be issued after February 2009.

Presenters are required to submit draft presentation slides and/or handouts three weeks in advance for inclusion on the Forum USB drive, and are required to submit final presentation slides or electronic content (video, audio, etc.) to be made available on the Web site after the event.
