The Maternal Wall in Academe: Academic Mothers and Strategies of Resistance and
Empowerment

In Unbending Gender: Why Family and Work Conflict and What to Do about It
Joan Williams argues that paid work in Western capitalist societies is
organized by the concept of the "ideal worker". This ideal worker, Williams
writes, "works full time and overtime and takes little or no time off for
childbearing or rearing" (1). When work is structured this way, Williams
continues, "caregivers often can not perform as ideal workers" (1). The
worker-caregiver dichotomy is, of course, gender codified: "men 'naturally'
belong in the market because they are competitive and aggressive; women belong
in the home because of their 'natural' focus on relationships and an ethic of
care" (1). Over the last three decades as female paid labor participation
increased, women, --at least the 90 plus percent who are mothers-- are expected
be perform as "ideal workers" in the workplace while simultaneously fulfilling
the carework responsibilities of the home. With women still doing the bulk of
household management - to include domestic labor, childcare, and the emotional
and organizational work of creating and maintaining home, family and community,
most mothers are unable to put in the extensive overtime hours that are required
for advancement and success in most professions. Mothers thus find themselves
"mommy tracked" making sixty cents for every dollar earned by full-time fathers
(Williams, 2000, 2). Indeed, today the pay gap between mothers and non mothers
under thirty-five years is now larger than the wage gap between young men and
women (Crittenden, 94). And while the "glass ceiling" and the "sticky floor"
are still to be found in the corporate structure, it is the maternal wall, most
scholars argue, that impede and hinder most women's progress in the workplace
today.
William's concept of a wall is an apt metaphor to describe the specific
experiences of mothers in the workplace in that many women today, particularly
those that are college educated, middle-class and professional, may not
encounter gender discrimination until they become mothers and hit full throttle
the maternal wall that blocks and blindsides them in their attempts at
advancement. "Many childless women under the age of thirty five", as Crittenden
writes, "believe that all the feminist battles have been won" (88) But, as
Crittenden continues, "once a woman has a baby, the egalitarian office party is
over" (88).
The aim of this session is to explore the various strategies used by academic
mothers as they encounter the maternal wall in academe.

The conference will be held in Chapel Hill, NC November 17-18, 2008 and will offer exciting and energizing sessions and workshops in the field of library instruction. Preconferences:

You are invited to submit a proposal to conduct a preconference workshop or seminar for the 2009 Pennsylvania Educational Technology Exposition & Conference (PETE & C). Individuals representing all academic disciplines and levels and all phases of technology and education are welcome to submit proposals. Preconference sessions can be in a seminar format, or hands-on training workshops and will be conducted on Sunday, February 8, 2009. Sessions can be either three or six hours in length.

Scope

The following general topics are examples of interest areas:
Computer use at all academic levels, K-12 and higher education, and in all academic disciplines.
Curricular planning in disciplines where technology is the focus of instruction.
Computer education and opportunities for special audiences.
Computer-managed instruction and computer based testing. Computer education for teachers.
Administrative applications of technology at building and/or district level.
Computer education outside the typical school environment.
Technology partnership programs with education and business, industry, or government.
Emerging technologies for educational utilization.

Information on Participation

Each 3-hour workshop that is accepted will receive one stipend of two hundred fifty dollars ($250); each 6-hour workshop a five hundred ($500) stipend. The decision to cancel any workshop due to low registration numbers is at the sole discretion of the PETE & C Preconference Committee.

Please note: Preconference presenters do not receive complimentary registration to the general conference and must complete a conference registration form if they plan to attend the general conference.

Proposals will be considered and accepted at the discretion of the preconference committee.

Critical pedagogy seeks to identify, critique, and disrupt the inequalities of the dominant culture, thus equipping learners to transform oppressive social, cultural, and economic conditions. While many theorists, critics, and practitioners have considered how critical pedagogical strategies and perspectives might be employed in higher education, the academic library remains mostly absent in these discussions. There have been few interventions in the library literature with specific reference to critical pedagogy, but these perspectives mostly consider critical literacy applications. Other forms of critical pedagogy, such as feminist, queer, and anti-racist, have yet to be fully explored in the context of the library instruction classroom. We intend for this book to intervene in this gap in the literature.

Objective of book

This book, to be published by Library Juice Press in September 2009, proposes to consider the following questions: How might library instruction benefit from exploring critical pedagogical strategies? What challenges are posed by the unique requirements of library instruction? And how might our use of critical pedagogical strategies help us embed library instruction in the critical classrooms on our campuses? We invite proposals that 1) investigate intersections between critical pedagogy and the library instruction classroom and 2) identify pedagogical applications that can be adopted in library instruction programs.

Target audience

The target audience for this book includes librarians who teach, library instruction program coordinators, faculty and instructors interested in bringing librarians into the classroom, and librarians interested in developing liberatory and anti-oppressive professional practices.

Suggested topics

Suggested topics include, but are not limited to:

· Envisioning what critical pedagogy might do for the library instruction classroom

· Examination of specific types of critical pedagogies--such as queer, feminist, or anti-racist--and their implications for the library instruction classroom

· Discussions of particular theories/theorists (e.g. Paulo Friere, Lisa Delpit, Peter Mclaren, Henry Giroux, Deborah Britzman, etc.) and their relevance for library instruction

· Illustrations of how critical pedagogy works in practice

· Examples of instruction sessions taught from a critical pedagogy framework

· Explorations of how critical pedagogy intersects with student and faculty research

· Considerations of how critical pedagogy can inform selection and collection development decisions

· Imagining how critical pedagogy can be useful in other teaching contexts -- e.g., during the reference interview, in workshops, when librarians teach in community spaces

Book: “Cases on Online and Blended Learning Technologies in Higher Education: Concepts and Practices”

Introduction
Online learning is becoming an important long term strategy for many institutions of higher education. However, in the future, "blended" learning—a balanced mix of traditional face-to-face instructional activities with appropriately designed online learning experiences—will be a more significant growth area than fully online learning. Blended learning is still in its infancy, and thus, there are few research studies providing insights into exactly how it should be implemented within curricula in higher education, or integrated with instruction. This book, therefore, provides real-life examples and experiences of those involved in developing and implementing blended learning in the higher education curriculum and instruction. It includes a wide range of the most current designs, methodologies, tools, and applications in blended courses. It also includes emerging issues, problems, and challenges in blended courses.

Objectives of the book
To provide real-life examples and experiences of those involved in:
• Designing blended learning
• Developing blended learning
• Managing blended learning
• Evaluating blended learning
• Institutional related issues
• Theory and research on blended learning

The target audience
The prospective audience of the book includes researchers, parishioners, professors, trainers, library media specialists, teachers, administrators, and educational technologists (who design instruction, produce instructional materials, and manage instructional computing services or learning resources collections) particularly from academic communities throughout the world. The goal of the book is to appeal to individuals with a professional interest in blended learning. Anyone working with blended learners or anyone engaged in blended learning will also find this book beneficial.

Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Theory and research on blended learning (e.g., new pedagogies, new technologies, and new theories)
• Developing and implementing blended learning
 design-related (e.g., course design, instructional strategy development, and course material designs)

SUBMISSION PROCEDURE
Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit a 2-5 page proposal clearly explaining the objectives and concerns of the proposed chapter by August 15, 2008. The status of the submitted proposals will be notified by August 31, 2008; the authors of accepted proposals will be provided with chapter organizational guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by November 30, 2008. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. Emerging technologies - such as virtual worlds, serious games, wikis, and social networking sites - have been heralded as technologies that are powerful enough to transform learning and teaching. Nevertheless, minimal work has investigated the affordances of such tools in the context of distance education. In particular, the goal of this book is to amalgamate work in the use of emerging technologies to design, enhance and deliver distance education. Researchers and practitioners interested in the above issues reside in varied academic domains, rendering the sharing and dissemination of their work a formidable task. Via this book, we hope to harness dispersed knowledge and multidisciplinary perspectives. The target audience is both members of research communities and innovative distance education practitioners.

Via such work, it is expected that each chapter will contribute a list of ideas and factors that need to be considered when emerging technologies are adopted for distance teaching and learning. Equally important, contributing authors should highlight the pedagogical, organizational, cultural, social, economic, or political factors that influence the adoption and success/failure of emerging technologies.

Audience

This book is intended to be used as a one stop locale for work relating to the use of emerging technologies in distance education. Please submit abstract(s) of your proposed presentation(s) (up to 100 words per topic suggested). Abstracts will be considered for an individual presentation, or as a participant in a panel discussion. We are also seeking proposals for 1/2 day preconference tutorials related to the foregoing. A proceedings will be prepared and you should indicate whether you will provide a paper prior to the conference for inclusion in the proceedings. Abstract submissions should be received by September 15, 2008. If your abstract is accepted, papers should be submitted by January 23, 2009 in order to be included in the Conference Proceedings. Authors of accepted papers are expected to attend the conference, present their work to their peers, and transfer copyright. Primary speakers receive a complimentary registration to the conference. All other speakers will be required to pay a discounted conference registration fee. NECC 2009 Call for Participation Now Open; Proposals Due October 8

ISTE is now accepting presentation proposals for NECC 2009. Submission opportunities are divided into four major categories and a variety of themes and strands. Dynamic, energetic presenters interested in engaging their audience in innovative ways should especially consider submitting proposals for Workshops or the highly interactive BYOL, Model Lesson, and Open Source Lab session categories. The LILAC (Librarians' Information Literacy Annual Conference) 2009 call for papers is now open. This year's conference will be held at Cardiff University from the 30th March - 1st April 2009. We welcome submissions from practitioners and researchers in a variety of formats including: short and long papers, posters, workshops, demonstrations and symposiums.

37th Annual LOEX Conference
April 30 – May 2, 2009
Albuquerque, New Mexico

The New Mexico LOEX Committee invites you to submit proposals to be considered for presentation at the 37th Annual LOEX Conference, April 30 – May 2, 2009 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The conference theme, Blazing Trails: On the Path to Information Literacy, explores the diverse paths that librarians take to develop successful information literacy programs.

Presenters are encouraged to develop unique and creative proposals related to the theme. Proposals should model best practices, provide useful information that participants can use at their libraries, showcase effective and innovative practices, support collaboration, and be as applicable as possible to a wide range of academic institution types. Successful proposals reflect elements of one of seven themes:

- Luminarias: The Art and Practice of Teaching casts light on teaching strategies, curriculum design, learning styles, and student engagement.

- Trail Guides: Leadership and Management covers topics such as managing a significant project or team, leading an initiative such as integrating information literacy into institutions of higher education, or establishing and fostering a professional development program.

- Off the Beaten Path: Creativity and Exploration includes comprehensive planning or implementation of innovations or emerging trends in all aspects of information literacy and instruction.

- Shortcuts: Lesson Plans To Go has the presenter share a proven lesson or unit plan, including processes and materials. Session participants should be able to go back to their respective institutions and readily implement the lesson plan.

- From Covered Wagon to the Railroad: Technology in Education asks what are useful roles of instructional technology in the 21st century? This track focuses on building, utilizing, or sustaining the effective use of technology in education.

- Round-up: Collaborative Efforts and Spaces examines how collaborations between people and programs can enhance information literacy and what types of spaces are best for collaboration and instruction.

- Are we there yet? Assessment and Accountability focuses on evaluating teaching or instructional tools, peer evaluation, or assessing user needs, student learning, or information literacy initiatives.

SESSION FORMATS
Two types of proposals will be accepted.

Presentation: A 60-minute session that includes time for a 45-minute presentation and 10-15 minutes of question and answer. Most feature a successful program, practice or key issue related to instruction or information literacy. Presentations are intended for an audience typically of 50-70 people. Presenters should include in the proposal description the topic and an outline of the presentation.

Interactive Workshop: A 60-minute session where the presenter facilitates a learning environment in which attendees develop or explore teaching and/or research techniques. Presenters are expected to facilitate a well-planned and interactive session. Workshops are intended for an audience typically of 30-60 people. Proposals should include a description of the topic and details on how the presenter will make this session a “hands-on” experience for attendees.

In addition, there will be Poster sessions. Students currently enrolled in a Master's program in library and information sciences along with librarians in resident or intern programs will be invited to propose poster sessions. Details about proposing poster sessions will be posted in a separate call for proposal.

SUBMISSION INFORMATION
Proposals must be received by November 21, 2008. Proposals must be submitted through the online submission form. The primary contact on the proposal will be notified if the proposal has been accepted for presentation by Friday, January 16, 2009.

The International Journal of Information and Communication Technology Education publishes articles, papers, manuscripts, and book reviews promoting the advancement of teaching with technology at all levels of education encompassing all domains of learning. The primary mission of the IJICTE is to serve as a medium for introducing, collaborating, analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating new and innovative contributions to the theory, practice, and research of technology education applicable to K-12 education, higher education, and corporate and proprietary education. Prospective authors are invited to submit abstracts of the highest quality not currently under review by another publication.

The IJICTE journal would be pleased to receive original materials concerned with the theoretical underpinnings, successful application, and potential for advancing technology education within formal education, corporate training, higher education, professional development, and proprietary education. The IJICTE publishes contributions from all disciplines of information technology education.

Submitted papers or extended abstracts will have three kinds of reviews: double-blind (by at least three reviewers), non-blind, and participative peer-to-peer reviews.

Authors of accepted papers who registered in the conference can have access to the reviews made to their submission so they can accordingly improve the final version of their papers. Non-registered authors may not have access to the reviews of their respective submissions.

Awards will be granted to the best paper of those presented at each session. From these session's best papers, the best 10%-20% of the papers presented at the conference will be selected for their publication in Volume 7 of JSCI Journal (www.j-sci.com/Journal/SCI). Libraries of journal author's organizations will receive complimentary subscriptions of at least one volume (6 issues).

Also, we would like to invite you to organize an invited session related to a topic of your research interest. If you are interested in organizing an invited session, please, fill out the respective form provided in the conference web page. We will send you a password, so you can include and modify papers in your invited session.
