A MONTHLY PEER-REVIEWED ON-LINE FORUM

Submissions are invited from educators, graduates, and post-graduates of all levels and areas of study for Academic Exchange Extra (AEE) (Editor-in-Chief, Elizabeth Haller ­ English Instructor at Kent State University). Qualified submissions from undergraduates may also be considered. AEE presents ideas, research methods and pedagogical theories leading to effective instruction and learning regardless of level, subject or context. We also seek cogent essays, poetry and fiction.
Articles to 7,000 words on theory, practice and administration of education across the full range of humanities and social science-based approaches are welcomed. Possible theoretical frameworks include: critical pedagogy, postcolonial theory, new historicism, postmodernism, feminist theory, as well as other critical frameworks, cultural studies and perspectives. The use of a theoretical lens is encouraged but not required; please see options for other submission types below.

We are also interested in social and cultural issues as they intersect with education. We prefer to include an array of diverse material each month, though thematic issues may be considered.
Essays up to 5,000 words are encouraged. Topics may include, but are not limited to, the following suggestions:

• multi-modal teaching
• distance learning
• collaboration
• teaching abroad
• e-communities and socialization
• community college retention and transfer
• service learning
• remedial education
• affirmative action
• marginalized or minority viewpoints and experiences
• tenure and post-tenure review
• urban education and issues of student inequality
• issues faced in special education
• postmodernism and education
• canonical revision/non-revision
• analyses/reviews of recent pedagogical publications
• response to any topic(s) included in the “Grist for the Mill” section of each issue

We also seek poetry to 60 lines, in traditional or free verse forms.

Fiction to 7,000 words is also encouraged.

Subject matter for poetry and fiction is unlimited; however, we will not publish inflammatory or libelous works, or works deemed otherwise inappropriate for this journal.

HOW TO SUBMIT AND DEADLINE

Please place the words “AEE Submission” in the subject line of your email.
Submissions not containing this or a similar phrase may be routed through a secondary filter, in which case your submission may be unintentionally overlooked. Due to the high volume of submissions received by AEE each month, please allow approximately six to eight weeks for a publication decision based on an initial review of your submission.

Publication date is intended to be within the first week of each month.

Submissions should follow MLA or APA guidelines. Send your submission as a Word Document (.doc) or Rich Text Format (.rtf) attachment.

All submissions must include a 4-5 sentence summary as well as a current brief bio that identifies your contact information (e-mail and telephone), school/departmental affiliation(s), position(s) (e.g., student level, instructor, professor and/or administrator), and areas of academic interest. For bio examples, please refer to the current issue’s contributor’s page.

Additionally, articles, works of fiction, and poetry are not blind reviewed and will only be considered for such a review when specifically requested by the author.

Pre-Conference Workshop - workshops will be scheduled on Sunday, April 6, 2008, from 1 - 4 p.m. Participants will work interactively with hardware and software.
Lecture/Presentation - presenter will share information about the session topic with participants.
Panel Discussion - moderator will lead the participants through a discussion related to the session topic.
Interactive Workshop - participants will receive hands-on experience with software and hands-on in a computer lab.
Poster Session - Posters will be displayed at the Double Tree Hotel on Monday, April 7, 2008, from 6:00- 7 p.m. (prior to banquet).

Please submit abstract(s) of your proposed presentation(s) (up to 100 words per topic suggested). Abstracts will be considered for an individual presentation, or as a participant in a panel discussion. We are also seeking proposals for 1/2 day pre-conference tutorials related to the foregoing. A proceedings will be prepared and you should indicate whether you will provide a paper prior to the conference for inclusion in the proceedings. Abstract submissions should be received by September 15, 2007. If your abstract is accepted, papers should be submitted by January 30, 2008 in order to be included in the Conference Proceedings. Authors of accepted papers are expected to attend the conference, present their work to their peers, and transfer copyright. Primary speakers receive a complimentary registration to the conference. All other speakers will be required to pay a discounted conference registration fee. InSITE (Informing Science + IT Education) conference solicits papers in any area that explores issues in effectively and efficiently informing clients through IT (information technology) and papers on IT education.

Some of the areas that can be covered under the two proposed guidelines are: Business Intelligence, Business Process Management, Communications, Communicating Meaning, Community and Society, Computer Science, eCommerce, Education, Government, Information Science, IT, Journalism, Justice and Law, Mathematics, Philosophical Issues, Psychology, Sociology, Working Together.

It will be useful to review papers presented at previous conferences.

Highly rated papers will be published in an Informing Science Institute journal. All other accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings.
The language of the conference is English. All papers will be double-blind reviewed by six or more reviewers. At least one reviewer will be external to the conference. All papers must be original, unpublished, and not currently under review by any other publication or conference. By submitting the manuscript for consideration, authors stipulate that they hold the copyright to the manuscript and, upon acceptance, transfer it to the Informing Science Institute. Authors also agree to assume all liability in case of copyright dispute.
Highly rated papers will be published in an Informing Science Institute journal. All other accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings.

Following are the specific requirements for each type of submission:

Research Papers should be submitted as complete papers (8-25 pages). Include a description of the context of use, the clients involved, the problem, and the proposed solution, if appropriate. Original thinking is valued.

Interactive Paper, Discussion Paper, and Practical Papers. Shorter papers (at least 8 pages) are also welcome. These let you share the ideas you have developed to date and receive constructive feedback.

Panel Discussions. Include a detailed description of the topic and identify four or more panelists who have agreed to attend the conference.

E-LEARNING SYMPOSIUM
RMIT University, Melbourne, 9-11 December 2007

This Symposium will bring together educators from all sectors (teachers, principals, teacher educators and researchers) to explore new directions in e-learning. Main speakers at the Symposium will include leading thinkers and in the field of e-learning, as well as numerous paper, colloquium and workshop presentations. Key questions will be addressed about the nature of learning using digital media and tools:

* What is the impact of the new information and communications technologies on learners? What do they already know? What do they need to know? What is the role of education or formal learning?
* How can existing teaching practices and learning content be mapped onto the digital environment? Or should they?
* How can the digital environment be used to create new and more powerful forms of learning?
* When do we know it's working? Evaluating digital, multimedia and online learning environments.

The Symposium will have both a research and a practice focus:

* Research and theory: what technologies? what pedagogies? what works?
* Practices: a marketplace in which teachers showcase their best work and e-learning developers demonstrate their applications.

Presenters may choose to submit written papers for publication before or after the Symposium in the fully refereed International Journal of Learning. If you are unable to attend the Symposium in person, virtual registrations are also available which allow you to submit a paper for refereeing and possible publication in the journal, as well as access to the electronic version of the Symposium proceedings.

19th International Conference on College Teaching and Learning

This is the nineteenth year of a highly successful international conference stressing the applications of learning and motivation research and theory and technology to higher education learning. Emphasis is on research and practice in teaching and learning—with focus on uses of innovative learning strategies and the Internet in face-to-face, blended and online course development and teaching. This year’s conference will again include a focus on strategies to improve online learner support services. The conference is expected to provide 250 or more faculty presentations to 1,000 attendees in all academic fields from throughout the world.
The conference includes both 25 and 45 minute presentations as well as poster sessions. Awards will continue to be presented to faculty nominated by their institutions for highly innovative contributions to teaching, learning, and technology, and the conference will again sponsor the Ernest L. Boyer International Award for Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Technology. The Boyer Award recipient will be selected by an international faculty panel and will receive a $5,000 cash award funded by McGraw-Hill Learning Solutions. The conference will also again publish “Selected Papers from the International Conference,” containing 12 to 20 of the most outstanding papers submitted to the conference, as judged by a faculty committee. The conference will honor the author of the “Best Conference Paper” among those contained in this publication, which is covered by APA’s PsycINFO.

Recognizing the importance of America’s future higher education faculty, the conference will continue to offer a track designed to provide a forum for graduate students to meet, present, and discuss their teaching and research projects and interests. This track will include a special registration fee for graduate student-presented poster sessions, with a session reserved just for graduate students and an award for the best graduate student poster presentation.

CONFERENCE DATES AND PLACE
The conference will be held April 14-18, 2008, at the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront. Located in the heart of downtown Jacksonville, on the northeastern Florida coast, the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront is a vibrant and exciting venue, offering a unique blend of entertainment, luxurious accommodations, and stunning vistas. Some of the nation's finest beaches and golf courses are just a short drive away, and the country's oldest city, St. Augustine is within a 45 minute drive.

Most rooms will be equipped with multimedia presentation systems. Poster Sessions are two-hour presentations which take place in a large ballroom. Each poster session participant is assigned to a booth and the conference provides a free standing poster board, a table and electricity at each booth.

Applying and Extending Qualitative Inquiry to Internet Research

As the number of academic studies utilizing qualitative research methods on internet data has increased, so have the questions and issues surrounding how one does research in/on online sites. Experienced researchers and novices grapple with multiple issues as they adapt, modify, and develop various research methods to online venues including chatrooms, instant messaging, blogs, social utilities, webpages, games, and 3-D virtual worlds such as Second Life. How does one identify sites for one's study? What sampling procedures work
best? What software is to be used in internet research? What are the benefits
and weaknesses of using particular methods? What issues arise when adapting a particular qualitative method for use in/on an online site?

We call for abstracts and papers that address these issues for a panel or series of panels, at The Fourth International Congress of Qualitative Inquiry (QI2008) - Ethics, Evidence and Social Justice (http://www.icqi.org/) that will take place at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign from May 14-17, 2008. In particular, we are interested in presentations that look at qualitative methods and the difficulties researchers encounter as they do or have done internet research. Our focus is not on results; rather we are looking for colleagues interested in sharing knowledge and discussing challenges of
the "nuts and bolts" of internet research.

Ingenta Research Award

Purpose

The Ingenta Research Award is given annually by the Library Research Round Table of the American Library Association to support research projects about acquisition, use, and preservation of digital information.


Example areas of research include:


* The analysis of online journal usage data to develop conclusions and predictive models which may be used by libraries and publishers in determining future behavior

* An investigation of the issues surrounding institutional archiving, particularly costs, preservation and securing the participation of faculty

* A study of information seeking behavior of readers and/or authors

* The development of future models for verifying the relative usefulness of publications

Other topics related to digital publications will also be considered.


Eligibility


Applications are welcome from practicing librarians, faculty and students at schools of library and information science, and independent scholars.

Criteria

The Ingenta Award Jury will evaluate applications on the basis of the following

criteria:

1. Appropriateness of the proposed project to understanding of seeking and use of digital information.

2. Significance of the problem.

3. Design of the study.

4. Qualifications of the investigator(s).

5. Realism of the timetable.

Amount

The grant consists of up to $6,000 for research and up to $1,000 for travel to a national or international conference to present the results of the research. Expenditures must directly support research; the award does not cover indirect costs or overhead. Half of the research amount will be paid within one month of the selection of the awardee; the remaining half will be provided approximately six months later upon the receipt of a satisfactory progress report as determined by the Ingenta Award Jury Chair and the ALA staff liaison to the Ingenta Award Jury.

The 24th Annual All-University Conference on the Advancement of Women in

SUBMISSIONS

We invite submission of papers reporting original academic or
industrial research in the area of Advanced Learning
Technologies. All papers will be peer-reviewed. Complete papers are
required to be reviewed. The expected type of submissions are:

* Full paper: 5 pages
* Short paper: 3 pages
* Posters: 2 pages
* Tutorial proposals: 2 pages
(The tutorial proposal should clearly outline the novelty of
the tutorial content, the expected audience, objectives, and
outcomes. Each tutorial will run for about 3 hours.)
* Panel proposals: 2 pages
(The panel proposal should clearly outline the theme of the
panel, its significance, expected outcomes, and at least five panel
participants. Each panel will run for about one and half hours. Panel
participants will have the possibility of submitting two-page papers
for review process for the papers to be included in the conference
proceedings.)
* Workshop: 2 pages
(The workshop proposal should clearly outline the theme of the
workshop, its emerging nature, expected outcomes, and at least five
panel participants. Each workshop will run for about two and half
hours. Workshop participants will have the possibility of submitting
two-page papers for review process for the papers to be included in
the conference proceedings.

Instructional Design for Complex Learning

A necessary competency for instructional designers is the creation of learning experiences that promote the acquisition of complex skills and knowledge for transfer to real-world settings. Differences exist, however, regarding the most effective strategies to facilitate complex learning.

To explore differing perspectives on this issue, the focus of the 2008 AECT Research Symposia will center on instructional design for complex learning. Papers addressing types of complexity, the assessment of complex task performance, whole-task versus part-task approaches, and other related topics are welcome. Please submit a 1500 word abstract by February 15, 2008. Accepted papers will be completed prior to the Symposia and distributed to registered attendees for discussion within sessions. We look forward to this opportunity for interaction and engagement with the AECT research community.

Overview
The Research Symposium is a bi-annual event designed to draw the best minds together for an intensive intellectual exchange of ideas on a focused topic that would culminate in the publication of a Symposium Proceedings. The goal of the symposium is to bring a small group of scholars together in a format that encourages in-depth dialogue and different perspectives on predefined topics and problems.

The second research symposium will be held June 18 to the June 21 at Hilton Garden Inn Hotel and at Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana. The registration fee for the symposium is $285.00 which includes 3 dinners, 2 lunches, and 3 continental breakfasts. Registration will be live by March 15, 2008. All presenters must register and are expected to attend.

Format
Proposals/presentation abstracts will be accepted, through electronic submission via the AECT website, until February 15, 2008. Notification of acceptance/rejection will occur by March 15, 2008.

All accepted and final papers must be submitted electronically (to be shared with all the participants) by March 16, 2008. Each paper author(s) will facilitate a session that would last approximately sixty minutes. These sessions are intended to be in a discussion format, with the key paper authors serving as facilitator and discussion leader as opposed to a formal presentation. There would also be only two sessions concurrently held, allowing the participants greater opportunity to engage in dialog with fellow scholars.

Evening meals and ensuing discussions would be by a selected speaker who is meant to incite, stimulate, or provoke further discussion addressing issues raised in earlier discussions. The framework for the symposium would follow a four-day structure, commencing with Wednesday evening dinner and seminar, with full-day Thursday and Friday sessions, and a half-day Saturday. Saturday morning would be reserved for summation, forming conclusions and key points for the white paper.

Review Process/Criteria
A total of 20 sessions (est.) will be scheduled. This selection process will be designed to ensure a mix of active participants that is satisfactory towards addressing the topic to be discussed at the symposium. The advisory committee will review and select proposals.

Invitation To Present

You are invited to present at the 2008 AECT International Convention in Orlando, Florida and to share your expertise and knowledge with your peers and those new to the field. Major shifts in learning, scholarship, research, and creative expression processes have precipitated a need for discussion and leadership to identify the opportunities these shifts present to professionals. The culture of our professional community within this dynamic setting changes daily as does our approaches to learning. The AECT International Convention brings together participants from across the nation and around the world offering practical applications, cutting-edge research, hands-on workshops, and demonstrations of the newest technologies and teaching/learning techniques in the field. Please use this opportunity to connect with your peers at the 2008 convention in Orlando.

This year's convention theme is On the Horizon: Rays of Change. As part of this theme, proposals may be submitted that include presenting both in real time and simultaneously in Second Life. The view of the horizon represents the current and potential visions of the individual and unique pieces of our profession that, in the light of day, create rays of continuously changing yet integrated patterns of practice. These rays surround both instructors and learners with a new culture of learning, a society growing out of the practice of facilitating learning and improving performance by creating, using, and managing appropriate technological processes and resources. Supporting the main theme are five sub-themed “rays”:

(Ray 3) Educational Transformation
(Ray 4) Professional Ethics
(Ray 5) Instructional Design Culture

Proposal Process To be considered, a complete proposal must be submitted. Presenters are limited (as key presenter) to making no more than two (2) concurrent session presentations during the convention. Presenters are expected to follow the AECT Code of Ethics.

A panel of peer reviewers will read blind proposals. See each Division’s link below for further information on Division requirements. You will receive electronic notification that your proposal has been received and, at the appropriate time, whether it has been accepted for the program.

Proposals will be reviewed using the following criteria:
• Clarity of proposal: how well it is written.
• Relevance, timeliness, and general interest level of topic.
• Match to the convention theme(s) and other demands of the program.
• Suitability for division/affiliate or organization mission and membership.

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

IJ-SoTL focuses upon higher/tertiary education settings that use original research about teaching and learning topics. The results of the research are to be analyzed and evaluated for their meanings, implications, and applications for the improvement of student learning in higher/tertiary education today.

Learning Inquiry

As Learning Inquiry starts it second year of publication we are
sending out a call for participation in our ongoing attempt to create a
transdiciplinary forum to engage the widest variety of perspectives on learning. We're
looking for articles and special issues that push the boundaries and include
new perspectives, but also take the opportunity to share research and experiences from particular locations of inquiry to a larger audience.

Learning Inquiry is a refereed scholarly journal, which is devoted to
establishing the area of "learning" as a focus for transdisciplinary
study. The journal's goal is to be a forum centered on learning that remains
open to varied objects of enquiry, including machine, human, plant and animal
learning as well as the processes of learning in business, government, and the
professions, both in informal and formal environments. The audience
for this journal is anyone interested in learning, understanding its contexts,
and anticipating its future.

The first volume of Learning Inquiry has included papers from a wide
variety of perspectives that have helped to frame the discourse we hope the
journal will engender. Our first issue, on the futures of learning included
contributions from Gary Natriello, Erik De Corte, Helen Verran, Mark
Warschauer, Stuart Moulthrop, Douglas Kellner and Heinz Mandl on
Discovery Networks, Metaphysics and Learning, Play, and Knowledge Management.
Leonard J. Waks brought together a "Special Issue on Listening and Reflecting" with
participation from Sophie Haroutunian-Gordon, Stanton Wortham, Latherine
Schultz, Suzanne Rice, Elizabeth Meadows, Megan Laverty, Andrea
English, A. G. Rud and Jim Garrison Past and forthcoming contributions cover topics as
diverse as the ethical challenges of training brain surgeons, organizational
learning theory, futures of digital learning, music and math, learning and
discipline, and situated cognition.

Learning Inquiry strives to strike a balance between presenting
innovative research and documenting current knowledge to foster a scholarly
dialogue on learning independent of domain and methodological restrictions. Learning
Inquiry also presents special issues that identify the central areas of learning inquiry to provide focus for future research.

The “good news” is that citations are limited to 50-500 words maximum. The citations will look more like dictionary/ encyclopedia entries and NOT paper or manuscript-length submissions. I am hoping you will want to be a Distinguished Contributing Author to the Lexicon and receive the additional acknowledgement that comes with submitting 10 or more citations (see web site for more information).

Trailblazers do more than keep people on the right path. They help people see where to begin and provide direction. How can educators and users of instructional technology around the world prepare for a future filled with technology that provides content at a faster-and-faster pace? How can instructional technology be used to enhance teaching and learning? Who will organize all this change? This year’s Conference Committee expects that we will all do this together.

MIC08 offers a full day of pre-conference workshops followed by two-and-one-half days of colleague to colleague presentations. The Conference also includes Corporate Sponsor presentation and exhibits, presentations from MERLOT Award winners, and opportunities to gather over food and beverage. The Pre-conference sessions begin on Thursday morning, August 7. The full conference agenda begins with a Welcome Reception Thursday evening and ends at noon on Sunday, August 10.

A special issue of ALT-J, Research in Learning Technology

Immersive virtual worlds (IVWs), such as Second Life, Active Worlds, Croquet and Forterra and massive multi-player games (MMPGs), such as EverQuest and World of Warcraft represent a paradigm shift in learning technology, and an important challenge to the world of education. The aim of this special issue of ALT-J is to develop and publish a timely collection of papers representing current research, developments and ideas in educational applications of IVWs and MMPGs. Of particular interest are papers that go beyond descriptions of objects and activities to build links between practice and pedagogy, and offer conceptual, methodological and analytical rigour.

5th International Lifelong Learning Conference

The 5th International Lifelong Learning Conference will be held 16-19 June 2008 at Rydges Resort, Yeppoon, Queensland. The theme is Lifelong Learning: Reflecting on Successes and Framing Futures. Potential authors, presenters and workshop conveners are invited to submit abstracts (maximum of 300 words) addressing the Conference theme. Suggested sub themes are available for consideration, but are not intended to limit the imagination.

The closing date for the submission of abstracts is 7 September 2007. Abstracts for refereed papers, presentations, workshops and symposia sessions will be assessed by the Program Committee and authors will be notified of the result by the end of September 2007. At that time a Word template for writing the paper and an Endnote style will be available. Full papers are to be submitted (by email attachment) by 29 February 2008.

Foundations of Informing Science

Foundations of Informing Science:
Volume I
Nominations, including self-nominations, due April 30

Over the past decade, the informing science transdiscipline has made enormous as an intellectual endeavor. Membership in the Informing Science Institute (ISI) has continued to grow during a period when many information-related disciplines have experienced contractions. ISI's growing number of journal publications, which include Informing Science and Journal of IT Education, have increased in stature and size and its initial forays into book publishing have led to extremely promising results. The Institute’s InSITE conferences continue to flourish despite cutbacks in travel budgets at many institutions. All of these indicators provide clear evidence of the value of the research being conducted in the informing science area.

As informing science continues to mature as a transdiscipline, it is useful to reflect upon what has been achieved, how these achievements relate to the initial objectives set forth for the transdiscipline, and where it might develop. As part of this reflection, we are announcing a new book, Foundations of the Informing Sciences: Volume I, which will serve as a celebration of the first decade of the informing science transdiscipline, and—much more importantly—will act as a an archive of ideas and priorities for new and existing researchers in the field.

The Book
Foundations of Informing Science: Volume I, edited by Eli Cohen and Grandon Gill, will consist of a collection of both previously published and original works that will help its readers develop a clear sense of the scope and purpose of the informing science transdiscipline. It will be organized into 5 parts, as follows:

Part I: What is Informing Science?

Beginning with Cohen's seminal work, which launched the field, this part will contain chapters that explain, to the reader unfamiliar with the transdiscipline, the nature, objectives and scope of informing science.

Nomination Process
All chapters in Foundations of Informing Science: Volume I will be based upon peer reviewed articles appearing in refereed journals. To be considered for inclusion in the book, an article must be nominated through an email sent to the book's editor ggill@coba.usf.edu by 30 April 2008, with self-nominations being encouraged. That nomination email should include:

· What part the chapter would appear in

· The chapter's expected contribution to the book

· A statement of the nominator's willingness to review one or more completed chapters as the book nears publication, scheduled for late fall 2008 or early spring 2009. (Volunteering in this manner is not a prerequisite for inclusion, but would be greatly appreciated.)

Previously Published Works

Most contributions will be based upon previously published articles, typically in ISI journals, although other sources will be considered provided that copyright issues can be addressed. After examining the nominated article, the editors will decide if it is consistent with the objectives and structure of the book. If appropriate, the editors will invite the author(s) to submit a chapter.

Included with each invitation to submit a chapter will be a list of specific changes desired prior to publication in chapter form. We anticipate that nearly all chapters will require some rewriting since the book is intended to be a tightly integrated work, rather than being a loose collection of minimally related reprints. For example, it would be entirely unnecessary to have an explanation of the informing science framework in every chapter, even though many articles necessarily include such an introduction. The editors will work with authors to achieve some degree of consistency in form and tone throughout the book. A web site containing a table of contents for the book and current chapter drafts will be maintained to assist in this effort.

Original Works

In some cases, a researcher may be working on a concept that has not yet been published, but which closely ties in with the objectives and structure of the book. In such cases, the nominating author should also include a synopsis (of 1000 words or fewer) of the research in question, along with an expected date of journal submission—which must be no later than 30 June 2008—plus a brief biography of the intended author(s). If the potential contribution looks appropriate, the editors will notify the authors of their willingness to consider it as a chapter. Then:

· Upon completion of the manuscript, the author will inform the book's editors and submit it to the most appropriate ISI journal for review (typically Informing Science Journal, but others—such as JITE—are also possible).

· The book editors will request that the journal editors expedite review of the submission.

· Upon acceptance (or provisional acceptance) by the journal, the authors will immediately submit their chapter draft to the editors, after which time both authors and editors will attempt to follow the "existing works" schedule as closely as possible.

October 17 & 18, 2008 What does it mean to be a girl? Who defines girlhood in an age when puberty and sexualization are happening at younger ages? How do girls assert their own identity in an increasingly mediated and consumerist culture which targets girls as a prime audience? Why do U.S. girls who are told that they can do anything feel like they have to do everything, and perfectly? What challenges do girls across races, classes, religions, nations, and cultures face in an ever more globalized world? What is the relationship between girls and feminism? What effect can feminism have on constructions of boyhood and masculinity and how in turn can this effect girls? On this United Nations Day we ask the question, “How in the World … do we get our students to think critically?” College faculty and librarians interested in the goal of improving students’ critical thinking skills will have an opportunity to share their best practices and learn from colleagues about this aspect of pedagogy central to all teaching and learning. Presenters at the MILEX Conference 2008 will share techniques, lead exercises, and illustrate classroom applications.

MILEX (Maryland Information Literacy Exchange), a new and growing organization of academic and instruction librarians, invites proposals from those interested in presenting at this conference. The MILEX Conference Committee is striving to construct an experience for academics that will be heavy on specific models and practical information for instructors to use in sparking their students’ critical faculties. Proposals that address opportunities to integrate critical thinking skills into lessons are of particular interest. Collaborative projects between faculty and librarians are especially welcome.

International Conference on Teaching and Learning with Technology (or iCTLT)

This International Conference on Teaching and Learning with Technology (or iCTLT) is jointly organized by the Singapore’s Ministry of Education (MOE) and the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE). ISTE is the organization that hosts the premier NECC (or National Educational Computing Conference) annually in the U.S.

The inaugural programme of iCTLT 2008 will focus on teaching and learning practices for engaging and effective digital-age education. It will feature education leaders, education researchers, classroom practitioners and industry leaders across the Asia-Pacific Region and around the world.

MOE (Singapore) and ISTE are now calling for proposals for iCTLT 2008. All teachers, school leaders, educators, researchers and industry leaders from related fields are invited to submit proposals. We also welcome corporate-sponsored proposals from exhibitors. The deadline for submission is 31 March 2008.

Categories of Proposals
Submission of proposals can be for a Paper Presentation or Poster Presentation. It is important to note that all presenters should ensure that legal copies of software are used at the conference.

Paper Presentations (5 & 6 Aug 2008)
The duration of each presentation can either be 30 min, 60 min or 90 min, and will be held during the concurrent sessions in meeting rooms on 5 and 6 Aug 2008.

The presentation may be presented as a lecture or panel discussion.

Lecture - There may be one or more presenters, each addressing the audience independently. The content should be of high interest and widely applicable to the audience. It should educate, inspire, challenge, and/or provide specific implementation ideas. The focus should be on evaluation and synthesis rather than the history/details of a specific project or initiative.
Panel Discussion - The main presenter serves as the moderator for his or her co-presenter panelists. The content should lend itself to a variety of perspectives with the moderator focused on creating a cohesive presentation.

Poster Presentations (5 & 6 Aug 2008)
The posters will be displayed in the exhibition hall. It can include 15 min presentations and/or demonstrations for presenters to interact informally with attendees.

Content should focus on the implementation of a lesson, curriculum, technology, model, or project, or demonstrate a good electronic resource/tool or practice for teaching and learning.

Vienna is an ideal-typical European city similar to Barcelona, London, Milan, Paris or Rome, but unlike the others it is very compact and easy to negotiate. Vienna is referred to by many as a unique onion, with each of the urban layers surrounding the oldest historic center being equally important to the overall flavor of the city. The Austrian capital therefore embraces all the traditions of a European city, from Roman foundations through to Gothic, Baroque and Historicism. Tourists are eager to visit Vienna because of the city's exciting combination of the royal-imperial flair of the past with the latest trends, the responsible cultivation of a precious heritage and charming traditions.


A natural paradise including forests, grassland, parks and gardens cover some 20,000 hectares or about half of the city, and then there is the Danube and other stretches of water on top of that. The Vienna Woods are not only the green lung of the city, but provide visitors with footpaths and mountain-bike trails of all distances. Vienna is fully geared to pedal power with almost 1,000 kilometers of urban cycle paths. A number of places in the city such as the vast (6,000,000sqm) Prater park, a former imperial hunting ground in the rambling Danube wetlands, are best explored by bike anyway. The Danube Island is another vast area for outdoor pursuits. It has numerous bathing areas, cycle paths, playgrounds and sports facilities. And on the still waters of the New Danube you can go for a dip or a swim, or get into a rowing boat, sailboat or even onto water-skis.

Teaching Gen M: A Handbook for Educators and Librarians

Call for Chapter Proposals

Teaching Gen M: A Handbook for Educators and Librarians is scheduled for publication by Neal-Schuman early in 2009. Chapter proposals for this book are being sought. Proposals should be no longer than 250 words and include the title of the chapter, an outline or description of the material to be covered, and a brief bio of the author. Deadline for submission is March 14, 2008. If accepted, completed chapters will be due June 30, 2008. Please send proposals as electronic attachments (.doc or .pdf) to the contacts listed below.

“Generation M” (“M” for “Media”) is a term applied to young adults born in the early 1980s through the early 1990s. Conventional wisdom has it that Gen M’s are constantly-connected, early-adopting, techno-savvy, multi-taskers who enthusiastically embrace new technologies and weave them into the fabric of their daily lives. Is the stereotype of the wired, techno-savvy undergraduate accurate or is there a more complicated reality? The purpose of the book is to provide instructors with background information regarding the unique aspects of Gen M and to present practical suggestions for creating learning objects that can be used in both traditional and online educational environments.

5th ALA Forum on Education

Call for Proposals – 5th ALA Forum on Education

We are pleased to announce a call for participation for the 5th ALA Forum on Education: Service Learning and Citizen Engagement to be held on Friday, June 27, 2008 from 1:30 to 3:30 pm during the upcoming ALA Annual Meeting in Anaheim, California. Masters Level students who have participated in a service learning project or who have designed a yet to be completed service learning project are encouraged to submit a proposal.

The 5th ALA Forum on Education will feature a researchpooloza format followed by a traditional poster session. During the researchpalooza you will address the audience from a podium and present your service learning project in 90 seconds or less with the aid of one PowerPoint slide to an audience of 150 ALA members. Following the researchpalooza presenters will be asked to participate in a poster session where attendees will be able to ask questions and further discuss service learning projects. The researchpalooza format was a great success at MidWinter 2008 and we excited to offer an opportunity to participate in this innovative program.

Weaving Patterns of Practice

You are enthusiastically invited to be a part of the joint POD and NCSPOD annual conference in Reno, Nevada, October 22-25, 2008. Please join us in exploring the theme of Weaving Patterns of Practice.

Northern Nevada's diverse landscape, from the Great Basin Desert to the Sierra Nevada peaks, has inspired the area's native artisans for centuries. This inspiration has been transformed into arts and crafts in which individual strands are woven together to create greater strength, utility and beauty. Yet the colors and textures of individual strands remain visible. The materials and designs are infinite, and the creative possibilities are endless.

This year’s conference represents the weaving together of our two organizations, POD and NCSPOD. On a practical level, our separate practices will be united into one event, where we join in achieving common goals, and yet maintain our unique identities by hosting receptions and sessions from each of our traditions. Working together gives us the opportunity to rethink and explain our practices. One example of this rethinking is the way in which we are organizing our session topics. Members of both organizations will find new language in the call for proposals.

This coming together also represents something larger: an exploration of the ways in which various kinds of institutions can collaborate to offer high quality post-secondary education. The following questions are provided to help you begin to reflect on our theme.

How do our patterns of practice reflect both those strands that persist across time and those that are emerging? In what ways do our practices intertwine the past, present, and future?

What diverse disciplines and populations do we seek to bring together through our work? In what ways, for example, do we promote cross-cultural and cross-generational learning communities?

Being pulled in so many directions, how do we as educators remain whole and strong? How do we integrate the various priorities of our lives?

These topics represent ongoing areas of research and practice among many POD members. They are not intended to limit your proposal in any way, but instead to help in assigning appropriate proposal reviewers and in planning the conference program.

This year you will start by choosing one of three broad categories and then one or two topics that best describe your proposal. The three broad categories from which you will select one:

Professional Development – Practices and activities contributing to the evolution of individuals in the field. Includes but is not limited to orientation, career planning, mentoring, goal setting, time management, and ethics.

Instructional Development – Practices and activities contributing to the advancement of teaching and learning. Includes but is not limited to learning theory, consultation, and programming.

Organizational Development – Practices and activities contributing to the vitality of the organization. Includes but is not limited to leadership, strategic planning, sustainability, accreditation and collaboration.

The topics are intended to allow greater specificity within the broad category

Online Education and Adult Learning: New Frontiers for Teaching Practices

Introduction
Learning is the practice of teaching and educating and the environment in which these activities take place. Learning often occurs in the workplace, through 'extension' or 'continuing education' courses at secondary schools, through colleges or university and online and ultimately in business and industry. Adult learning refers to the field of study and practice of utilizing sound instructional design principals, technology and learning theory as a means to solve educational challenges and human performance issues relating to adults.

As we move further into 21st century a new paradigm of learning is emerging – the paradigm of eLearning and learning through cyber space. With this new form of learning environment, we now begin to see the emergence of multiple modalities of learning including human performance technology, mobile learning environments, distance education opportunities, as well as blended learning possibilities. We must now begin to critically examine and bring to light the teaching and learning practices in these venues.

There is substantial effort and research within various disciplines that address current issues and trends and the implications of eLearning, online dealing and associated adult learning environments both in business and in education. Recently there have been several initiatives within the US that focus on strategies and research approaches to improve the learning process within these virtual contexts and to help streamline innovative learning paradigms. Because of the multicultural space and present cultural differences, there is a need to introduce an interdisciplinary approach into research and future development of innovative learning approaches within the context of adult learning for eLearning and online education. Therefore we must examine the implications of teaching and learning practices within these venues.

Objective and Mission of the Book
The aim of this book is to bring together related subject matter from different fields, reports and discussions from students, faculty members, researchers, and practitioners in the field of instructional technology, training development, education, performance improvement, relating to aspects of elearning. The chapters collected for this book will have influence on future developments in adult learning both in education and in industry.

The book will stimulate researchers to focus on current issues, trends, implications, and emerging thoughts in the field of adult learning in the context of eLearning and online education to design better products and services. In addition, we want to provide theoretical understanding of the essential links between authentic learning, social psychology, instructional design, eLearning, online education, and methods of adult learning.

This book will offer a critical discussion and insights into the virtual domain of eLearning and online education within the context of adult learning. Here the focuses are on the theoretical and practical challenges of eLearning in business and industry in the forms of workplace learning (e.g. training, organization development, and performance improvement) and its opportunities for education (classroom learning, adult learning, K-12 education).

Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before April 30, 2008, a 1-2 page chapter proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of his or her proposed chapter. Full chapters of 3000-5000 are expected to be submitted by August 31, 2008. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. Individuals interested in submitting a chapter (6,000-8,000 words) on the above-suggested topics or other related topics in their area of interest should submit via email a 1-2 page manuscript proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of the proposed chapter by April 16, 2008. We strongly encourage other topics that have not been listed in our suggested list, particularly if the topic is related to the research area in which you have expertise. Upon acceptance of your proposal, you will have until August 15, 2008, to prepare your chapter of 6,000 – 8,000 words and 7-10 related terms and their appropriate definitions. Guidelines for preparing your paper and terms and definitions will be sent to you upon acceptance of your proposal. Full chapters will be submitted to a double-blind peer review.

The International Institute for Qualitative Methodology is pleased to
announce that online registration & submission of poster abstracts for
the 8th Thinking Qualitatively Workshop Series (June 23-27, 2008 at
the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada) is now available.

Thinking Qualitatively 2008 includes a conference keynote address by
Dr. Lynne McKechnie (University of Western Ontario), opportunities for
networking with colleagues from around the world, and an interactive
poster session for participants to receive feedback on

This interdisciplinary educational series allows participants to
engage with experts in qualitative inquiry and learn about specific

poststructuralism in qualitative research, and much more! On Saturday

This week-long event is aimed at participants from all academic

career. Individuals conducting research in universities and colleges
and/or professional settings (e.g., libraries; hospitals; government

Technology, Pedagogy, and Content Knowledge
Issue 9(1), March 2009

The editors of the online journal Contemporary Issues in Technology and Teacher Education (CITE Journal) announce a call for papers for a special issue of the journal on the topic of “Technology, Pedagogy, and Content Knowledge.” Accepted papers would appear in Volume 9(1) to be published in March 2009.

Scholarly articles may report research describing (a) teachers or preservice teachers who demonstrate “TPACK” (also known as TPCK) in the K-12 classroom; (b) teachers/preservice teachers in the process of developing TPACK; or (c) teacher education programs with demonstrated success in developing TPACK in their graduates. We have a special interest in articles describing the development of instruments or methods to measure TPACK. Theoretical articles will also be considered, especially if they synthesize the research or development of TPACK thinking in a particular content area.

Science Education Section

Papers submitted to the science education section should address TPACK in the context of K-12 science teacher education. Acceptance notification: A maximum of 10 days after submission's date.
Camera-ready for the pre-conference proceedings: May 22nd, 2008

Submitted papers will be reviewed by a double-blind (at least three reviewers), non-blind, and participative peer review. These three kinds of review will support the selection process of those that will be accepted for their presentation at the conference, as well as those to be selected for their publication in JSCI Journal.

Authors of accepted papers who registered in the conference can have access to the evaluations and possible feedback provided by the reviewers who recommended the acceptance of their papers/abstracts, so they can accordingly improve the final version of their papers. Non-registered authors may not have access to the reviews of their respective submissions.

Authors of the best 10%-20% of the papers presented at the conference will be invited to adapt their papers for their publication in the Journal of Systemics, Cybernetics and Informatics.

Each session to be included in the conference program will have corresponding electronic pre-conference and post-conference sessions for 15 days each. In the electronic pre-conference sessions authors will have access to the papers to be presented at their session and to an associated electronic forum, so they can be better prepared for their conference face-to-face session. Similarly, electronic post-conference sessions will complement and support a follow-up of the respective conference sessions, via an electronic forum and the possibility of evaluating papers presented at the associated session. These evaluations will also support the selection process for the papers to be published in JSCI journal.

The registration fee of effective invited session organizers will be waived and they will receive at the registration desk, for free, 1) a package of 4 DVDs and one CD containing the 6-hour tutorial "Fundamentals and History of Cybernetics: Development of the Theory of Complex Adaptive Systems" and 2) a second 4-DVDs/1-CD package 6-hours tutorial titled "Cybernetic Management". The market price of each of these packages is US $ 295.

Minitrack: The Diffusion, Impacts, Adoption and Usage of ICTs upon Society

Since the emergence of the 21st century governments and companies around the globe have been striving to offer Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) infrastructures, namely broadband. During the first 4 to 5 years interest was focused upon whether the infrastructure was being provided and focus was on the issue of accessibility. Since then countries and research both from industry and academe have changed their focus as it is considered that now accessibility has been examined and now the emphasis is on how the households and social communities are diffusing, adopting, and using the ICTs and further, consideration of the impacts of ICTs. The aim of this mini-track will be to offer a global perspective of how ICTs are being diffused, used and adopted within society (households and social communities). By undertaking this research academics, industry and government agencies will learn of how ICTs are being utilised by various societies and what measures are being undertaken to have households and the various social communities adopt and use the ICTs with a further consideration of the impacts of the ICTs. Academic research has been focusing upon the diffusion, adoption and usage of broadband since about 2000. By undertaking this research and offering this track, now the focus could offer innovative ideas of diffusing, adopting and using ICTs that have not been considered before.

HICSS conferences are devoted to the most relevant advances in the information, computer, and system sciences, and encompass developments in both theory and practice. Expanding Literacy Studies

Expanding Literacy Studies is an International, Interdisciplinary Conference for Graduate Students to be held April 3-5, 2009, at The Ohio State University.

Literacy Studies is a recent construct. At the same time, it addresses long-standing questions and concerns within and across disciplines. But what is literacy? Who is studying it? And how is it being studied?

Literacy is traditionally defined as reading and writing. Contemporary constructs, however, include everything from cyber and health literacy to mathematical and visual literacy. The potential advance this broadened view might represent is complicated by historical myths about literacy, persistent fears about declines in literacy, and failure to connect literacy research across disciplines.

Addressing the need for an expanded conversation about literacy that exceeds disciplinary boundaries, this conference is a space for graduate and professional students from all fields to ask questions, consider directions, examine representations, make connections, and share investigations of literacy, broadly defined. This conference aims to expand the dialogue and explore the landscape and intersections of literacy studies as a framework of critical investigation. This approach is meant to do the double work of expanding the field while critiquing the expansion. To that end, we invite proposals from graduate and professional students in ALL fields.

In response to this emerging diversity, ICCE2008 will be a meta-conference – a conference of multiple, collocated theme-based conferences. On one hand, nurturing theme-based research communities will enhance the identity or sense of belonging of individual researchers in these thematic communities and help cultivate prospective Special Interest Groups in the Asia-Pacific region. On the other hand, animated exchanges among these collocated thematic communities will inspire new research and, more importantly, foster research openness – broadmindedness and mutual-appreciation for scholarly work in different research foci. Moreover, for cultural and geographical reasons, there is a need to connect Asia-Pacific researchers effectively with the worldwide research communities, which are usually associated with some established international conferences. The deadline for submitting proposals to present is June 15, 2008. We'll notify you by July 1, 2008, if your proposal has been selected or not. If multiple folks submit proposals for the same topic, we reserve the right to ask you to work together on a session due to the limited number of slots available. We only have two days' worth of symposium, and time flies when you're having fun!

Presentations will be limited to 45 minutes, so please make sure you can cover your topic in that amount of time. We wish we could let all of you speak for as long as you need, but again, we only have so many slots.

ALA makes no ownership claims on materials submitted for the 2008 Gaming, Learning, and Libraries Symposium. We expect to make all presentations selected for the Symposium available on this site after the event under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 2.5 License. Please submit a proposal to present only if you are willing to agree to this license.

We also hope to do some podcasts with presenters during the Symposium, so please be prepared to be asked to do this. If you really don't like doing audio, we'll be happy to interview you in a different medium (print or video, most likely).

First consideration will go to session topics that are unique, innovative, or otherwise new to our profession. Please be sure to note in your description why your topic/project is different from other ones.

We are tentatively scheduling three tracks for Monday, November 3, 2008. They are research on gaming and libraries, gaming and literacy, and going beyond videogames. These tracks may change, though, especially in light of submitted proposals. To suggest additional themes, please send your ideas to Jenny Levine at jlevine [at] ala.org .

If you don't include all of the information, we may or may not have time to pester you for the rest of it, which could adversely affect your status in the selection process. Addressing Diversity Issues within the Writing Classroom

The editors of a new professional development book under contract with Fountainhead Press are soliciting essay submissions. Addressing Diversity Issues within the Writing Classroom will consist of 15-20 essays that showcase effective pedagogical ideas on bringing diversity into and addressing issues of diversity within the writing classroom. The intended audience consists of graduate students and first time instructors, as well as experienced university, community
college, and high school instructors who want to find a place (contact zone) where they can meet their diverse students and then help them make the journey through a composition class.

Each essay should be focused around a specific type of diversity issue or theme and provide examples of how new and experienced teachers can use diversity issues to invigorate their teaching of writing. Essays should be pedagogical in nature; however, a familiarity with how addressing and/or using diversity fits in with current composition models is expected. Essays that include examples of student writing and sample writing assignments are particularly
encouraged. We hope to have at least half the essays focused on the experience of new teachers (graduate assistants, high school teachers, or professors new to this pedagogy).

Submissions should not exceed 5000 words and should adhere to the

* Conference background and goals

The IADIS CELDA 2008 conference aims to address the main issues concerned with evolving learning processes and supporting pedagogies and applications in the digital age. There have been advances in both cognitive psychology and computing that have affected the educational arena. The convergence of these two disciplines is increasing at a fast pace and affecting academia and professional practice in many ways. Paradigms such as just-in-time learning, constructivism, student-centered learning and collaborative approaches have emerged and are being supported by technological advancements such as simulations, virtual reality and multi-agents systems. These developments have created both opportunities and areas of serious concerns. This conference aims to cover both technological as well as pedagogical issues related to these developments. Main tracks have been identified. However innovative contributions that do not easily fit into these areas will also be considered as long as they are directly related to the overall theme of the conference – cognition and exploratory learning in the digital age.

* Format of the Conference

The conference will comprise of invited talks and oral presentations for discussion-oriented papers. The proceedings of the conference will be published in the form of a book and CD-ROM.


Authors of the best published papers in the CELDA 2008 proceedings will be invited to publish extended versions of their papers in a special issue of the Educational Technology Research and Development Journal (ETR&D) - ISSN: 1042-1629 (print version) ISSN: 1556-6501 (electronic version).

The space that digital games occupy in many people's lives has grown exponentially. Research on the socio-political ramifications of digital games has not, however, and is only now beginning to catch up. This panel seeks to redress the theoretical gap between this world and a growing number of virtual worlds and welcomes therefore papers that explore the relationship between digital games and questions of time, politics/political agency, and security using insights gained from the Social Sciences as well as the Humanities.

Introduction
Online learning is becoming an important long term strategy for many institutions of higher education. However, in the future, "blended" learning­a balanced mix of traditional face-to-face instructional activities with appropriately designed online learning experiences­will be a more significant growth area than fully online learning. Blended learning is still in its infancy, and thus, there are few research studies providing insights into exactly how it should be implemented within curricula in higher education, or integrated with instruction. This book, therefore, provides real-life examples and experiences of those involved in developing and implementing blended learning in the higher education curriculum and instruction. It includes a wide range of the most current designs, methodologies, tools, and applications in blended courses. It also includes emerging issues, problems, and challenges in blended courses.


Objectives of the book
To provide real-life examples and experiences of those involved in:

-Developing blended learning
-Managing blended learning
-Evaluating blended learning
-Institutional related issues
-Theory and research on blended learning

The target audience
The prospective audience of the book includes researchers, parishioners, professors, trainers, library media specialists, teachers, administrators, and educational technologists (who design instruction, produce instructional materials, and manage instructional computing services or learning resources collections) particularly from academic communities throughout the world. The goal of the book is to appeal to individuals with a professional interest in blended learning. Anyone working with blended learners or anyone engaged in blended learning will also find this book beneficial.

Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

SUBMISSION PROCEDURE
Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit a 2-5 page proposal clearly explaining the objectives and concerns of the proposed chapter by August 15, 2008. The status of the submitted proposals will be notified by August 31, 2008; the authors of accepted proposals will be provided with chapter organizational guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by November 30, 2008. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. Library Instruction 2.0 Conference

The NCLA College and Universities Section & Community and Junior College Libraries Section invite you to submit proposals for the Library Instruction 2.0 Conference. The conference will be held in Chapel Hill, NC November 17-18, 2008 and will offer exciting and energizing sessions and workshops in the field of library instruction. The conference theme, "Library Instruction 2.0," reflects the next generation of library instruction.

Proposals are sought for a variety of formats including formal sessions, demonstrations, panel sessions, and workshops. Proposals are due July 1, 2008.

Preconferences:

You are invited to submit a proposal to conduct a preconference workshop or seminar for the 2009 Pennsylvania Educational Technology Exposition & Conference (PETE & C). Individuals representing all academic disciplines and levels and all phases of technology and education are welcome to submit proposals. Preconference sessions can be in a seminar format, or hands-on training workshops and will be conducted on Sunday, February 8, 2009. Sessions can be either three or six hours in length.

Scope

The following general topics are examples of interest areas:
Computer use at all academic levels, K-12 and higher education, and in all academic disciplines.
Curricular planning in disciplines where technology is the focus of instruction.
Computer education and opportunities for special audiences.
Computer-managed instruction and computer based testing. Computer education for teachers.
Administrative applications of technology at building and/or district level.
Computer education outside the typical school environment.
Technology partnership programs with education and business, industry, or government.
Emerging technologies for educational utilization.

Information on Participation

Each 3-hour workshop that is accepted will receive one stipend of two hundred fifty dollars ($250); each 6-hour workshop a five hundred ($500) stipend. The decision to cancel any workshop due to low registration numbers is at the sole discretion of the PETE & C Preconference Committee.

Please note: Preconference presenters do not receive complimentary registration to the general conference and must complete a conference registration form if they plan to attend the general conference.

Proposals will be considered and accepted at the discretion of the preconference committee.

Deadline for submission is August 15, 2008.

EQUIPMENT: Each session room has a video projector, screen, a 4-outlet extension cord and an Internet connection. You are responsible for supplying your own computer and any other equipment that you may need.

Critical Pedagogy and Library Instruction: An Edited Collection

Critical pedagogy seeks to identify, critique, and disrupt the inequalities of the dominant culture, thus equipping learners to transform oppressive social, cultural, and economic conditions. While many theorists, critics, and practitioners have considered how critical pedagogical strategies and perspectives might be employed in higher education, the academic library remains mostly absent in these discussions. There have been few interventions in the library literature with specific reference to critical pedagogy, but these perspectives mostly consider critical literacy applications. Other forms of critical pedagogy, such as feminist, queer, and anti-racist, have yet to be fully explored in the context of the library instruction classroom. We intend for this book to intervene in this gap in the literature.

Objective of book

This book, to be published by Library Juice Press in September 2009, proposes to consider the following questions: How might library instruction benefit from exploring critical pedagogical strategies? What challenges are posed by the unique requirements of library instruction? And how might our use of critical pedagogical strategies help us embed library instruction in the critical classrooms on our campuses? We invite proposals that 1) investigate intersections between critical pedagogy and the library instruction classroom and 2) identify pedagogical applications that can be adopted in library instruction programs.

Target audience

The target audience for this book includes librarians who teach, library instruction program coordinators, faculty and instructors interested in bringing librarians into the classroom, and librarians interested in developing liberatory and anti-oppressive professional practices.

Suggested topics

Suggested topics include, but are not limited to:

· Envisioning what critical pedagogy might do for the library instruction classroom

· Examination of specific types of critical pedagogies--such as queer, feminist, or anti-racist--and their implications for the library instruction classroom

· Discussions of particular theories/theorists (e.g. Paulo Friere, Lisa Delpit, Peter Mclaren, Henry Giroux, Deborah Britzman, etc.) and their relevance for library instruction

· Illustrations of how critical pedagogy works in practice

· Examples of instruction sessions taught from a critical pedagogy framework

· Explorations of how critical pedagogy intersects with student and faculty research

· Considerations of how critical pedagogy can inform selection and collection development decisions

· Imagining how critical pedagogy can be useful in other teaching contexts -- e.g., during the reference interview, in workshops, when librarians teach in community spaces

Introduction
Online learning is becoming an important long term strategy for many institutions of higher education. However, in the future, "blended" learning—a balanced mix of traditional face-to-face instructional activities with appropriately designed online learning experiences—will be a more significant growth area than fully online learning. Blended learning is still in its infancy, and thus, there are few research studies providing insights into exactly how it should be implemented within curricula in higher education, or integrated with instruction. This book, therefore, provides real-life examples and experiences of those involved in developing and implementing blended learning in the higher education curriculum and instruction. It includes a wide range of the most current designs, methodologies, tools, and applications in blended courses. It also includes emerging issues, problems, and challenges in blended courses.

Objectives of the book
To provide real-life examples and experiences of those involved in:
• Designing blended learning
• Developing blended learning
• Managing blended learning
• Evaluating blended learning
• Institutional related issues
• Theory and research on blended learning

The target audience
The prospective audience of the book includes researchers, parishioners, professors, trainers, library media specialists, teachers, administrators, and educational technologists (who design instruction, produce instructional materials, and manage instructional computing services or learning resources collections) particularly from academic communities throughout the world. The goal of the book is to appeal to individuals with a professional interest in blended learning. Anyone working with blended learners or anyone engaged in blended learning will also find this book beneficial.

Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Theory and research on blended learning (e.g., new pedagogies, new technologies, and new theories)
• Developing and implementing blended learning
 design-related (e.g., course design, instructional strategy development, and course material designs)
 development-related (e.g., course management system, course support system, Web-based learning management system building, online tools development, online testing system development, and student corroboration)
 management-related (e.g., learning resource management, faculty support, learner support, and technical support)

SUBMISSION PROCEDURE
Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit a 2-5 page proposal clearly explaining the objectives and concerns of the proposed chapter by August 15, 2008. The status of the submitted proposals will be notified by August 31, 2008; the authors of accepted proposals will be provided with chapter organizational guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by November 30, 2008. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. The book is scheduled to be published by IGI Global (formerly “Idea Group, Inc.”), www.igi-global.com, publisher of the Information Science Reference (formally “Idea Group Reference”) and Medical Information Science Reference imprints.

Some of the areas that can be covered under the two proposed guidelines are: Business Intelligence, Business Process Management, Communications, Communicating Meaning, Community and Society, Computer Science, eCommerce, Education, Government, Information Science, IT, Journalism, Justice and Law, Mathematics, Philosophical Issues, Psychology, Sociology, Working Together.

Submissions Instructions:

The language of the conference is English. All papers will be double-blind reviewed by six or more reviewers. At least one reviewer will be external to the conference. All papers must be original, unpublished, and not currently under review by any other publication or conference. By submitting the manuscript for consideration, authors stipulate that they hold the copyright to the manuscript and, upon acceptance, transfer it to the Informing Science Institute. Authors also agree to assume all liability in case of copyright dispute.

Highly rated papers will be fast-tracked for publication in an Informing Science Institute journal.All other accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings.

Following are the specific requirements for each type of submission:

Research Papers should be submitted as complete papers (8-25 pages). Include a description of the context of use, the clients involved, the problem, and the proposed solution, if appropriate. Original thinking is valued.

Interactive Paper, Discussion Paper, and Practical Papers. Shorter papers (at least 8 pages) are also welcome. These let you share the ideas you have developed to date and receive constructive feedback.

Panel Discussions. Include a detailed description of the topic and identify four or more panelists who have agreed to attend the conference.

Introduction

Emerging technologies - such as virtual worlds, serious games, wikis, and social networking sites - have been heralded as technologies that are powerful enough to transform learning and teaching. Nevertheless, minimal work has investigated the affordances of such tools in the context of distance education. Most often, the literature presents a description of such technologies along with classroom integration ideas, presenting an incomplete picture of how such technologies are used in distance education. In particular, the goal of this book is to amalgamate work in the use of emerging technologies to design, enhance and deliver distance education. Researchers and practitioners interested in the above issues reside in varied academic domains, rendering the sharing and dissemination of their work a formidable task. Via this book, we hope to harness dispersed knowledge and multidisciplinary perspectives. The target audience is both members of research communities and innovative distance education practitioners.

Scope

The book will be limited to the use of emerging technologies for distance education. Recommended emerging technologies of interest for the book include, but are not limited, to:

• Cell/mobile phones and devices,

Invited Submissions

The book will consist of chapters (5,000 – 8,000 words) showcasing best practices, illustrating and analyzing how emerging technologies have been used in diverse distance learning and teaching areas. Via such work, it is expected that each chapter will contribute a list of ideas and factors that need to be considered when emerging technologies are adopted for distance teaching and learning. Equally important, contributing authors should highlight the pedagogical, organizational, cultural, social, economic, or political factors that influence the adoption and success/failure of emerging technologies.

Audience

This book is intended to be used as a one stop locale for work relating to the use of emerging technologies in distance education. As such, it is expected to be relevant to researchers, practitioners, and students. Importantly, due to the fact that interested parties reside in multiple disciplines and academic departments, chapters should be accessible to a broad audience.

Submission Procedure

By September 1, 2008: Submit a 1-2 page chapter proposal summarizing the intended submission.

New Literacies

Call for manuscripts: New Literacies (Peter Lang Publishing)

One of the premier education publishing groups, Peter Lang Publishing is
looking for works that understand how new literacies and new ways of seeing
education are being invented -- as people from all walks of life, in diverse
sites, wrestle with new technologies, shifting values, changing
institutional forms and processes, and emerging structures characteristic of
postmodernity/New Times/the Global Informational Age. These texts aim to
explore these emerging domains and to create awareness of key trends and
features, translating them into educational consciousness and practice.
These texts should explore in depth and from a range of perspectives the
extent, nature, and implications of new literacies in global context,
challenging familiar ways of framing education, and what it means for
education to be powerful, effective, and enabling under current and
foreseeable conditions.

We wish to encourage and support new, early-career authors as well as
established scholars.

Library Materials and Services for Children and Young Adults: Historical Perspectives
Library History Round Table (LHRT) Research Forum, July 2009
Co-Sponsored by the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA)


The Library History Round Table (LHRT) of the American Library Association (ALA) seeks papers for its Research Forum at the 2009 ALA Annual Meeting in Chicago, July 9-15, 2009. The theme of the Forum will be the history of library materials and services for children and young adults. This program is co-sponsored by the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA).


LHRT welcomes submissions from researchers of all backgrounds, including students, faculty, and practitioners. Proposals are due on November 28, 2008. Each proposal must give the paper title, an abstract (up to 500 words), and the scholar's one-page vita. Also, please indicate whether the research is in-progress or completed. It is desirable that the abstract include a problem or thesis, as well as a statement of significance, objectives, methods/primary sources used for the research, and conclusions (or tentative conclusions for works in progress).


From the submissions, the LHRT Research Committee will select several authors to present their completed work at the Forum. The program will be publicized in January 2009. So that the Forum's facilitator may introduce and react to each author, completed papers are due June 19, 2009. The Research Forum will likely occur on Sunday, July 12, 2009. CALL FOR PAPERS

Conference theme: Reflections

We welcome papers that present variations on reflections, a word that signifies different aspects of our information literacy work and experience.

Reflections can involve:
* Research into learning theory
* Investigation into instructional practices
* Exploration of the learning behaviours of our students
* Examination of our identity as teachers

Our vision for the reflections of WILU 2009 is a spectrum of sessions that will inspire and engage the information literacy community. The idea of reflections connotes depth and thoughtful work, which we see presented through either theoretical or applied research. We envision sessions that will require the active participation of conference participants. The sessions of WILU 2009 will call on us to reconsider past practices and advance new ideas and approaches into the future.

Proposals can be submitted for either 45-minute presentations or 7-minute "lightning strike" presentations.

Nous acceptons les propositions qui portent sur le thème « réflexions » ou ses variantes. Ce concept regroupe divers aspects de notre travail et de notre expérience quant à la formation documentaire.

Les « réflexions » peuvent comprendre :
* La recherche portant sur les théories d'apprentissage
* Une investigation de nos pratiques d'enseignement
* Une exploration des comportements d'apprentissage de nos étudiants
* Un examen de notre identité en tant qu'enseignant

L'objectif de nos réflexions à WILU 2009 est de présenter une gamme de sessions qui inspirerons et motiverons la communauté intéressée à la formation documentaire. Le thème « réflexions » sous-entend un processus de pensée profonde que nous prévoyons présenter par le biais de recherche théorique ou pratique. Nous envisageons des sessions qui nécessiteront la participation active des délégués. Les sessions de WILU 2009 nous demanderons de repenser nos pratiques antérieures tout en mettant de l'avant de nouvelles idées et des approches novatrices pour l'avenir.

Des propositions peuvent être soumises pour des présentations de 45 minutes ou des présentations « éclair » de 7 minutes.

MISSION OF IJVCSN:
