A. Information about me

  1. My philosophy about teaching and teaching with technology
  2. My home page.

B. Evidence of course information available to students out-of-class

  1. Use of ANGEL to give course information.
  2. My page of resource links for students' reference out of class.
  3. Use of ANGEL/Excel as an example of maintaining grades

C. Evidence of "public" use of technology

  1. I will use technology in the majority of my classes, provided there is access in the room. Below is an example PowerPoint presentation used to teach the difference in two past tenses of Spanish to beginner Spanish students. This was presented in the Fall semester of 2004 in my Teaching Methodologies class as an example of using technology with communicative language teaching.
  2. My PowerPoint Presentation on the preterite VS imperfect for beginner Spanish students.
  3. The public use of technology is becoming ever so important in today's world - a world of professionalism that seeks finesse and style in presentation and that gives no room for error. Therefore, today's presentations, be them for professional or classroom use, can be greatly enhanced due to the proper use of technology. Technology makes it easier for the presenter to present and for the audience to see what is being presented.

D. Sampling of at least three different digital "media" with indication of how they are used for learning

  1. A Powerpoint presentation on the weather. This was created in PowerPoint with pictures of photos of various weather conditions. The presentation can be used as an introduction to weather expressions in a basic Spanish class.
  2. A couple of pictures used for teaching reflexive verbs.
  3. A song activity for use in the Spanish classroom. This activity was created by typing the lyrics to the song for the students to view, and adding a few questions for the students to think about. These questions are not to test the students so much as to make sure they follow the lyrics. This exposure gives them authentic input in the form of text, while also giving them listening practice if they listening to the song and following along with the lyrics.

E. Evidence of use of at least five technologies that support change in pedagogical methods

  1. Penn State tools
  2. Resources

F. Evidence of evaluation/ reflection on use of various technologies for teaching

By this point, my reflection on the use of technology for teaching should be evident thoughout this portfolio. Regarding the effeciency and effectiveness of teaching with technology, I am obviously for it; however, I am also aware that some people may be reluctant to use it. I am aware that using technology in the classroom may require some additional effort on the part of some instructors and students. Some instructors may not be as familiar with using technology as they are with their current methods of teaching and, therefore, feel that their teaching will be more effective with their current methods. Some students, such as those that are not as familiar with technology, maybe also find it more challenging to use technology rather than more traditional methods of teaching and learning. However, in regards to the teachers' perspective, it usually does not take that much time to become familiar with the particular types of technology that may be used in the class or curriculum. Additionally, after spending a little extra effort to become familiar with the technology used in one's classes, the rewards in the end should outweigh any early consequences. As for the students, they too should be able to learn quickly how to use the technology needed for the class. In comparison to the real material of the class, with a little help and guidance in the early stages, learning to use the technology should be a breeze. Students should then too recognize the rewards of putting forth a little extra effort in the early stages. The consequences mentioned here are not likely to be very common with younger generations, however, and most 18-22 year old college students are likely to welcome and enjoy the use of technology in their classes. With this, I hope that my views of teaching with technology are understood and that this portfolio has served you well in showing just a few of the advantages of using technology in the classroom.
