*~IST-220 Introduction to Networking. This course is an introduction to computer networking. The course includes hands on work relate to building small networks as well as a more general introduction to large scale networks and telecommunications.
*~IST-230 Discrete Mathematics. Discrete mathematics focuses on math that is relevant to computers. The course covers material such as mathematical logic, binary arithmetic, set theory, graphs and probability.
*~IST-240 Introduction to Computer Languages. ~IST-240 is an introduction to Java. As currently designed, we use the ~BlueJ editor to work with and create Java classes. This course is primarily intended for fourth semester IST students; however, it is also available to business students seeking an information systems option with their business degree.
*~MIS-103 Microcomputer Applications in Business, Microsoft Office 2007. This class is an introduction to using computers and Microsoft Office. The components of Office that are covered are Access, Excel and Word. Access is a database application, while Excel is a spreadsheet program. Word is a word processor for creating and editing documents. The class is introductory in nature, and the basics of these programs are covered.
*~PSU-3 First Year Seminar. ~PSU-3 is taught in a variety of different ways throughout the Penn State system. I teach personal finance, which covers everything from balancing a checkbook through stocks, bonds, mutual funds and retirement planning with IRA's and 401k's. While this course doesn't prepare students to completely plan for retirement due to it's brevity, it does give them a solid understanding of the issues and the things that need to be done to correctly manage finances throughout their lives. It's a good place to start.
*~SRA-211 Threat of Terrorism and Crime. ~SRA-211 is the second course in the Security and Risk Analysis degree at Penn State. This course is an introduction to computer crime, terrorism in general, and terrorism as it pertains to technology.
*~SRA-311 Risk Management: Assessment and Mitigation explores the problem of assessing and dealing with risk. The course begins with an introduction to risk in general followed by the development of a basic risk framework. It then looks at the mathematics of risk, basic types of risk including physical risk, financial risk and information systems risk, as well as tools used for risk analysis.
