I'm a Master's student in the Department of Geography at Penn State University. I've previouly been a TA for Geography 10 (Physical Geography) and Geography 363 (Geographic Information Systems). My advisor is Petra Tschakert. I'm from Portland, Oregon, where I earned my B.S. from Portland State University in March, 2006. Prior to coming to Penn State, I worked for 13 years as a Unix Systems Administrator in a variety of environments, large and small. My work allowed me to feed my travel addiction, and that travel has heavily influenced my plans in Geography. In particular, In July 2001, I traveled to Nigeria with a group of library scientists, to give computer training to library science faculty at several universities throughout northern Nigeria. Then, in February 2005, I went to Guatemala with Portland based Child Aid to assist and train staff at PROBIGUA, as non-profit organization building libraries and computer centers throughout Guatemala. (If you're looking for an opportunity to learn Spanish in Central America, PROBIGUA is a fantastic choice – your tuition helps fund their library building activities.) Master's Thesis My research involves looking at the political ecology of computer and electronic waste in the developing world. I spent half of the summer of 2007 in Accra, Ghana doing my field work and am now writing my thesis. Education M.S., Geography, May 2008 (expected), Pennsylvania State University. B.S., Geography, March 2006, Portland State University, Magna Cum Laude. Awards Anne C. Wilson Graduate Research Award (2006). AAG-CAPE Field Study Award (2007) . Previous Research As an undergraduate, I worked with Dr. Andrew Fountain and David Percy on a database of glacier change. I helped develop a system for managing and displaying a collection of historic photos and other data for glaciers in the western U.S.. Publications Percy, D., Hanson, E., Fuhriman, D., Holm, C., Garrick, W., LeDoux, C.,Fountain A. (2006), "Spatio-temporal asset management in a database of glacier change." Paper presented at Geoinformatics, Reston, VA. Fuhriman, D. (2006), "Identity Management Identified." ;login:, August 2006.
