I have been a listener of the Bluebox Podcast for over a year now. If you are interested in VoIP security, I recommend it. A few months back they put out a call for volunteers to do post-production editing on some of their special edition interviews. I lucked out with this one, because Dan York gave me an invitation to the beta of DropBox. DropBox is a really cool online storage system that allows you to synchronize a local folder on your computers (note the plural usage) with the folders in the cloud. At least during the beta, you get 2GB of online storage to sync up.

So how is that social you may ask? DropBox allows you to create shared folders to share with your friends and colleagues. Working with your local copies is just like working with any local file. Changes get synced anytime you are connected to the Internet. While online, the changes are updated immediately. There is a nice little history feed in the web interface to let you know what has been done with the folders. I haven't had more than a few days of tinkering yet, and DropBox is in beta. I still think it deserves a shiny object award for now. Time will tell if it stays shiny. I have 10 invites to this service, and if there is anyone reading this blog, I will give you first dibs on one.

I listen to an unhealthy number of podcasts in a week, but since I don't have cable, spend 12 hours per week commuting to and from work, and don't have satellite radio, I hear all kinds of interesting things. I have been listening to FLOSS Weekly on the TWiT podcast network.

FLOSS Weekly is about free and open-source software. This week's episode includes a rather lengthy interview with Ward Cunningham. He is the guy who invented wikis. Not just a guy who invented a type of wiki. Back in 1995, Ward invented the wiki. He wrote it in Perl. Here is a link to the original. Check out the show for some really interesting stuff.

I have finished the third installment of Network NPI.  I have uploaded to iTunes U this morning, so it should be available shortly.  Check it out here.  Let us know what you think at networknpi@psu.edu.

Network NPI Episode 2 - Meet Phil Coolick was uploaded today.  Phil talks about what exactly his team does at NP&I.  Application Development Engineering works on voice over IP and video conferencing designs.

Network NPI Album Art
Network NPI which is the podcast I started for my department here at ITS is now available in iTunes U.  Actually, it was available last Wednesday.  There is not a whole heck of a lot to making a podcast if you have purchased a Mac recently.  Garageband does most of the work of creation.  TLT does the work of creating framework to upload the podcast.  Throw in a couple apps such as Seashore and Audio Hijack Pro.  Borrow one Dave Strong Nittany Lion and you have a podcast.

So have a listen to the podcast.  I have recorded Episode 2, but need to finish the editing.  Find us under Around Penn State-->ITS.

Update: You can also take the easy way, and click the iTunes U link here

How about a podcast?

Here is a sample of a type of podcast that I would like to work on for TNS here at Penn State. This is a four minute episode of the ScobleShow. I think showing people what we do would be a step to help building better network services. Networks after all can be pretty boring. It's the uses of networks that are lots of fun.
