Looking into the Past

| 1 Comment | No TrackBacks

I was doing some updates to my PSU Blog this morning -- mostly exporting old sites out of the MT 3 environment that we are looking to discontinue on October 15, 2008 (that was a hint). At any rate, I setup SFTP to PASS to move some images around and clean up my directories when I came across some of my old work.

When I say old work, I mean it. I came across a presentation I remember doing for an ETS Show and Tell back in 1999. At the time I was a World Campus Instructional Designer working on Electrical Engineering courses with my friend and colleague, Dr. Stu Kurtz. Stu and I both had a real interest in doing something very innovative ... and while I think Stu and I drove each other crazy, we really drove our collective bosses even crazier. At the time, Stu and I wanted to deliver a full on course experience, complete with a bunch of rich media files (sorta like enhanced podcasts without the RSS), real world scenarios, links to videos, and a whole bunch of executable Mathmatica activities. We had a huge problem getting all of this to work from a web browser, so I built an Authorware "launcher" application that linked it all together. I hate to say it was fun finding ways to work the web back in the day.

At any rate, the presentation is still sitting in my PASS space -- I always did hate PowerPoint, so I did my preso as a simple website. If you have any interest in what we were doing back in the day at the World Campus take a look ... a couple things to note ... the first is how much stuff we built for each and every course (help files, getting started guides, and other items) and the other is the use of First Class as the communication environment. Crazy stuff.

A post my wife linked me to this afternoon seemed to resonate with me on a bunch of levels ... the first being is that we can all do better ... the second is that there are times when instead of standing on the sidelines it is important to jump in -- regardless of the splash or the associated ripples. I guess if you are left asking if you resemble the counter argument, well, then you probably do. You decide, but I would suggest stepping outside yourself and thinking about it. Worth a read and some thought -- or not. Up to you. Check out the post over at the "alex the girl" blog. At any rate, I'd like to know if people have initial reactions to the thoughts expressed.

Earlier this week we started opening up the Blogs at Penn State project to the first round of external pilot testers ... there were about a dozen or so of us using it for the last six months or so, but this was the first group of "real" people. This past week I also installed the Google Analytics code into my primary blog here as well, just to get a feel for how many people were looking at it. The thing about where the project is right now is that we don't have a Blogs at Penn State directory to make discovering blogs easy. You essentially have to know the userid of the person you are trying to check out ... we're thinking about how we can (or should) make blogs more discoverable.

Here is the dashboard from my Google Analytics home page ... not much traffic and nothing like my Learning and Innovation blog, but this surprised me. I spent a little time digging through the statistics as well and was surprised to see how people were finding me. I am going to be watching what this means to me over time ... I am wondering if more people will stumble upon this site. Time will tell.

Hi everyone .... lots of people here today. I just finished showing off the Blogs at Penn State project and discussed how blogs can be used across the University to empower all sorts of opportunities. I think people got it ... when you compare the process of publishing traditional web pages to blog publishing people pay attention. At any rate it was fun.

Wii Made It

When I arrived home yesterday afternoon my long awaited Wii was sitting by the door. After a 15 minute set up I was creating Mii characters for the whole family. I couldn't get the WiFi working, but will today. The real test of the system happened last night when my sister and her boyfriend came over ... the three of us were joined by my wife in a 3 and half hour Wii playing session. Amazing! Too much fun.

Innovation is a strange thing in that most think it has to come in the form of new processors and millions of pixels. This thing's innovative features are that it sucks you in with its personality and engages users with its novel controls. The game of the year? Bowling -- who would have thought it!

Twitter is My New Friend

I've recently rediscovered Twitter ... from what I can tell it allows me to create instant updates of what is going on. What kinds of things could we use this for within ETS?

Time to Move On

| No TrackBacks

"Time to get going. What lies ahead I have no way of knowing, but under my feet the grass is growing. Its time to move on, time to get going." Tom Petty, Time to Move On

So, I've spent the last seven years of my life helping to build the Solutions Institute within the School of Information Sciences and Technology at PSU. Starting November 1st, 2005 I will begin a new chapter in my life -- Director of Education Technology Services at PSU. The chance to work towards moving the work started at SI out to the larger University community just seemed like the right thing to do. I will miss the Institute, the people in it, and the friends I have built there ... but, one smart person at IST reminded me that I would only be down the street. True, but in so many ways once you move on, you move on. It will be an amazing ride as I try to work with what appears to be another set of amazing people to try and make Penn State a better place. A challenge? Absolutely ... one that I am afraid of? Absolutely not. I'd be fooling myself if I didn't say it is going to be tough -- probably tougher than getting SI off the ground, but it sure seems like it will be fun trying. Building and changing things are what I do.

I'll be tracking what goes on as the adventure unfolds ... probably not here, but over at Learning & Innovation. Stop by and check it out. Thank you to the School of IST for giving me the chance to have an impact, for teaching me so much, and for giving me the opportunity to be part of something special.
