Can you expand on what "need to share" entails? I wonder if there is some perceived hurtle, such as the project needing to be appropriate enough for work (and sharing).

- JEFFREY CHARLES D'ANGELO

Hey Cole,

We are putting this idea to the test next week! For our next Hot Team, we are trying out the idea of the mini sabbatical to get the paper done in a more efficient, and collaborative way.

We will be meeting for 4 hours one day and 4 hours another day. During that time we'll talk about our topic (Flipping the Classroom) and by the end of day two, we will have a finished paper, (hopefully) ready to publish.

I'll let you know when we end up meeting, and if you have a minute, stop by and share your thoughts.

- BRIAN YOUNG

Old school as it may seem, white boards and sticky notes can be a powerful data visualization tool. I like how you Derek used that and worked through it to give a true framework with what you wanted to do. Nice VIN diagram too :)

- MATTHEW N MEYER

I had a similar discussion with Hannah just yesterday about the "listen to your own complaints" part. She and I are both the type who decided that we wouldn't complain about something unless we were also willing to present a solution (or at least offer to help).

While I was at the MOR IT Leadership conference last week, we talked a lot about coaching. Everyone there, including the people running the program, seemed to have a coach. What I took from that is that coaching afforded the opportunity to step back and reflect (with prodding) on your position as a leader and what you really want to accomplish - even if you're at the CIO level. There's a certain humility in admitting that you'll always have room to grow as a leader and that you'll need some help.

You and I get to talk about this and we've both decided to make it more of a focus of our time together. I'd like to be a part of more of a group discussion as well.

- ALLAN SHAWN GYORKE

Comment on "Standing and Walking Meetings"

I love the walking meeting idea. I remember recommending it to some people when I started working at World Campus in 1997 (it never took off, but I still like the concept).

So beyond the physical benefits, I think this would be better for mental health and to keep things focuses.

I'm also SO glad this is coming from other people and not me - mostly because as I don't want it to be like "Allan likes to work out and is pushing it on everyone else".

So the practical questions remain - what kinds of meetings should be walking/standing meetings? How will that affect things like scheduling the meetings (length, location, etc...)? How can we use mobile technology to take care of the tasks that are typically done sitting down (like note taking). The recording is one idea, but I'm not sure I'd like everything to be recorded. Mostly, just some simple decision point notes would suffice.

So yeah - if we can find some additional posts from people who have experience with walking/standing meetings, I'd love to see them.

- ALLAN SHAWN GYORKE

I've found this to be a tad confusing every time I've tried with the LYNDA app. Following your directions, specifically typing "psu.edu", the first time couldn't find a server, the second time brought up something from the "Planetary Science Institute" (Really... check out the capture ) The only way I've had success is over Safari, using a shortcut to the site that takes me to WebAccess first if I'm not signed in. But regardless of the how- It does look good! It's nice that they've built a site that gives me what I need.

- DAVID R STONG

Listening to Fred Rogers speak immediately puts me into a sense of calm. Not only do I remember fondly his neighborhood expression of care ("You've made this day a special day by just you being you"), but I can still sing along with Tomorrow, and Won't You Be My Neighbor, and What Do You Do with the Mad that You Feel. I don't think it makes us hippies; I think it touches an emotional chord very deep within us and triggers memories of caring. Memories of someone who spoke slowly, clearly, and directly to us because he told us we mattered--and we believed him.

This is why I believe community matters. When we break down the barriers of space, location, backgrounds, race, gender, and focus instead on the specialness of each other, we evoke strong feelings of belonging. Maslow called it a basic need; but Fred Rogers recognized that each of us needed to know we are special.

I miss that gentle soul.

- rb smail
