Podcasting in the Collegian

| No TrackBacks

Last week I was interviewed for an article the Collegian was doing on podcasting at Penn State titled, Lectures could be available for iPods. Riveting title, but it is a decent article. I worked hard with the staff writer that she understand the pilot nature of our project. Nice to see a little positive flow.

I am starting to get the Twitter bug. If you don't know what Twitter is, maybe its time you learn. I just finished a big post over at Learning & Innovation about it all.

I thought we had a great discussion about both the blog project and the podcasting update ... I love it when we can have a conversation and have nearly everyone join in. I felt like there will be great interest in the blogs at Penn State project and that it will be used for some interesting things. I can only imagine what this space will look like in 18 months. Exciting stuff!

Twitter is My New Friend

| No TrackBacks

I've recently rediscovered Twitter ... from what I can tell it allows me to create instant updates of what is going on. What kinds of things could we use this for within ETS?

So I was going to be in Atlanta this week for ELI ... instead I am in bed sick as a dog. Life is goofy that way sometimes, but can you do? Maybe this will be the extent of the illness stuff for the year ... that would be good. At any rate, I can always read what my friend Chris Brady has to say about the goings on.

ETS Talk Podcast 13

| No TrackBacks

The latest ETS Talk Podcast is now available. I am hoping now with the new enclosure capabilities in our very PSU Blog solution it will be auto-delivered via an RSS Enclosure. As always, all the ETS Talk Podcasts can be found at Podcasts at Penn State or Penn State on iTunes U.

YAB ... Yet Another Blog

| No TrackBacks

But this time it is different. This is the root blog built with the new PSU Blogger Tool. It is obvious that the tool is based on MovableType from Six Apart. This tool was selected for a whole bunch of reasons ... some of them very good. It has a majority of the features faculty, staff, and students will need to make it happen, but it does lack some basic functionality that might end up being a bit of a deal killer downstream. We envision big things for the environment, we'll just have to put it through the paces. Honestly it is a wait and see opportunity.

I'll use this space to provide some thoughts about a whole host of things. I blog "for real" over at my own domain on the Learning and Innovation blog. That is where I put almost all my blogging energy, so if you are really interested in what I have to say I would subscribe to that feed. This will be a place to keep you updated about stuff directly related to PSU. Not sure what kind of frequency I will have here, but I will do my best. For now, welcome!

As of now, there are a couple of things to keep in mind about comments at the PSU Blogger space ...

  1. All comments are authenticated no matter what you select in the settings area you see in the second image. We will be discussing this as it eliminates the ability for people outside PSU to comment. The reason this is currently the case is b/c the scripts to make comments work are located on the blogs.psu.edu server ... when you click to submit a comment it attempts to send you back through the secure location. Works fine if you are already logged in.
  2. The "Authenticated Comment" setting is not using Web Access, it uses Open ID. In this implementation it is using the TypeKey ID from Six Apart.
  3. Even though one must authenticate to leave a comment, the comment form itself allows you to put any name, email, or website in. So I could effectively comment at anyone's PSU Blog by any name I choose.

Below are two images ... the first shows a capture of the main menu in the MT ... to set your comments correctly, select "Settings."

login_pane.png

Then use the settings below to allow comments. Remember, even though it says anyone can comment, you must have a PSU user ID and password.

Podcasting at Penn State

Being able to time shift academic content is proving to be an important and emerging trend on campus. Students are making time to interact with educational content in ways they haven't in the past and we feel it is important to understand that.

The Podcasts at Penn State project's goal is to provide a platform to enable easy podcasting for all members of our target audiences.

Our project is essentailly a semester old now and we have seen great growth. During the Fall 2006 semester we saw about 40 sections actively podcasting across all of the Penn State system. We are currently engaged in a formal evaluation of the first phase of the pilot and will be engaged in more evaluation this Spring.

We are expanding the pilot to 50 sections as well as a handful of what we call Engagement Projects. With these projects we provide faculty with a set of resources and ask them to work within a targeted set of expectations to integrate podcasting into their teaching. This approach allows ETS to work collaboratively with faculty and students to understand how we can better support and promote a service before we launch it.

Learn more about the Engagement Initiative at http://ets.tlt.psu.edu/engage.

MP3 Players on Campus

slide.029.jpg

Everywhere you turn there are white earbuds. As a matter of fact 37% of our students own iPods according to last year's FACAC survey and 67% own MP3 players in general ... you could say the market is right for providing portable content.

slide.030.jpg

There is a trend here that suggests our younger students will be more prepared for content delivered in this format. I am anxious to see what the results will look like for 2007.

podcast-sitecompfinal04.jpg

On January 19th ETS will roll out the second version of the Podcasts at Penn State site. The new version will provide cleaner integration with Penn State on iTunes U as well as improved access to help materials. The new site will form the home for the Penn State Podcasting Users Group.

Chris Millet is the project manager for the Podcasts at Penn State project. When not meeting with the faculty engaged in podcasting, Chris can be caught recording the iTunes U Tuesday podcast.

Tim Perry spends much of his time working with faculty and other groups on campus to bring them into the podcasting fold. His obvious enthusiasm for podcasting is what hooks our audience.

When we move out of pilot we have the start to some very nice collateral materials. Even without a drop of marketing Penn State on iTunes U sees significant weekly traffic. We average about 1300 unique downloads a month from the iTunes U site. subscriptions are growing as well, so people are visiting less and receiving more via RSS.

Our iTunes U environment ... anyone can access hundreds of podcasts within our space. Log in at http://itunes.psu.edu.

Our partnership with Apple provides us with a storage and distribution platform that is designed specifically for managing podcasts in an educational environment. We are working hard to make the solution as integrated as we possibly can with PSU infrastructure.

audacity_shot.jpg

Audacity is a cross platform podcasting solution that we have made available in all of our public classrooms and labs. In addition, about 20 of our classrooms are fully equipped with wireless microphones tied directly to the podium machines.

One of the more exciting developments of the Podcasts at Penn State project is how faculty are turning their students into podcasters. Fewer faculty are recording their lectures and are doing much more interesting things with the technology.

Can you imagine seeing a title like that at a University just six months ago? Makes me proud!

Noelle Isenberg is a PhD student in the German Language Department. Early last Fall we worked with them to create a podcasting studio in their building.

The student run Foreign Language Podcasting Studio is the home to both French and German podcasting activities at University Park. Over a dozen sections of French utilized the Studio in the Fall 2006 semester.

Just one of the machines in the Foreign Language Podcasting Studio. The Studio is sponsored by TLT and managed locally by staff in the German Department. This relationship has increased podcasting in the department in ways we couldn't have done otherwise.

Podcasting & Snow Days

We are working with EMS and a University-wide committee to bring podcasting to the surface as a piece to the overall disaster planning process for Penn State. Administrators are beginning to see podcasting as a first step towards engaging students quickly and easily if there is a University closure.

This Spring we will be working with Dr. Kathlyn Brown, Assistant Professor of  Communications at Penn State McKeesport to help redesign Communications 260W: News Paper Writing and Reporting.

The goal of this project is to provide students with the the skills sets, technology and real world experiences needed to become a “real-time street reporter.”  Curriculum content will include supplementing and enhancing student driven content generated through journalistic participation including employing video and audio podcasting.

Additionally, students will be asked to articulate and evolve their understanding of how media shapes perceptions, and how the use of technology impacts socialization of the emerging ethical standards that will shape their professional practice as media participants in online communities. Finally, 260W students will have an opportunity to participate in the continuation of the McKeesport High School Civic and Community Engagement  after school program.

ETS Talk & Podcast Shows

ipod_ets_talk.jpg

The weekly ETS Talk Podcast has been the number one podcast at Penn State for the last 2 months. Produced every Friday the ETS Talk Podcast focuses on projects and the thinking going on in and around ETS.

Something else surprising has been happening ... Colleges and other units have been creating a lot of Podcast Shows. These are either in support of academic activities or informational shows designed to extend the message of the unit. The Berks podcast, from Dean Brady, and Center for the Performing Arts all have popular podcasts available.

Podcasting Events

IMG_2471.jpg

Over the last year, we have captured audio from ITS events and have made them available to the general public... essentially extending the reach of our organization in the process. By capturing events and the conversations around them we have been able to increase our visibility and explore how podcasting can be used to support a greater number of our audiences.

Sitting down with guests of the University to discuss their thoughts has opened doors to new thinking and opportunities. We are working hard to make this a larger part of our interactions.

Ready for Prime Time?

| No TrackBacks

I am wondering if we are ready for a limited release of the Blogs at Penn State ... I still believe this will eventually become a well utilized service in the future. For now I a, just excited we are getting closer to reality with it. I still think there are some outstanding issues to deal with, but all in all it feels good. One thing that needs to get moving is the external set of pages that support the whole experience. We'll get that rolling this week.
