My First Post~ Impact of the Internet Essay

In this day and age the Internet is actively affecting the lives of billions of people whether or not they are aware of it. While growing up, I was unaware of the rapid growth of the Internet. Occasionally I heard a story about it on the news but I really didn’t know what it was. I didn’t become acquainted with a computer even until I was in fifth grade and I was placed in the higher reading group, in which we were allowed to play reading games on what seemed like just another video game.
Things changed when I became a student at Pottsgrove Middle school. I quickly learned what the internet was and what computers were and that pretty much everyone had one except for me. From the very first week of middle school, computers and the Internet became something that I coveted. I was jealous of my fellow classmates who could do all the extra credit assignments that required “looking something up” for the next class and I was ashamed by my hand written papers when everyone else had begun to type them. Somewhat humorously the first major effect that computers and the Internet had on me was my handwriting. I painstakingly wrote all of my papers in the neatest handwriting I could muster so that my papers would not look too sloppy in comparison with that of my peers.
I never thought that I would be able to have a computer of my own. By the time I was in eighth grade I had seen ads for computers on the television and I was distraught by how expensive they were. They were way beyond a birthday or Christmas present and in a family with four children, where we literally lived from paycheck to paycheck, a computer simply wasn’t a priority. I frequently vented my frustration. I was heading into high school and I was taking all honors courses where I would surely need to type my papers. My grandmother was able to find a non-profit organization called Project 2000, which gives computers to underprivileged families. I finally had a computer of my own and I was ready to take high school by storm. I had taken typing courses in middle school and was fascinated by all of the things that computers made easier.
A grammatical fiend, I was in awe of features like spell check and the built in thesaurus of Microsoft Word. I really had no idea of full spectrum of things that the Internet had to offer. I learned more and more about the Internet as high school progressed.
So I had a computer and it only took another couple months before we got a phone line and hooked up the Internet. Addiction is a strong word but I was definitely mildly obsessed with instant messenger and social networks such as Xanga and Myspace. I had no idea that all of my friends had been online talking to each other like that for years and I was glad to finally be part of it all.
Although the Internet made it easier to do my homework and to take on more responsibility when participating in group projects, that is not what the internet was all about to me. The Internet was a way to expand my social outlook on the weekends. I would go on aim on a Friday night and would almost instantly have plans with friends to go to the movies or to a football or baseball game.
I have never really taken the Internet any further than the social or homework aspect. I am actually fairly inexperienced when it comes to using the Internet, especially in comparison to the rest of the people in my major. I had never considered a career in computer science before one of my friends brought me up to Penn State for his Information Sciences and Technologies “Spend a Summer Day” program. The Security and Risk Analysis segment intrigued me. I always thought that I would go to school for pre-law or something to that effect but I never wanted to go to law school. The added expense and the extra time have never been appealing to me. The plethora of opportunity that SRA offers seemed right up my alley, as I have always been one to dabble in a little bit of everything. I would be lying if I said that I wasn’t also drawn in by the prospect of the “average starting salary” and “signing bonuses” that they dangled in front of us.
In the future I know that the Internet will have a great deal to do with my daily tasks at whatever occupation I choose to tackle. I want to work in a field that is semi-government related and I may want to deal with cyber-terrorism. The Internet will continue to grow and with the prospect of a global network in the not-so-far-off future, I believe that it will begin to play a larger role in all professions.
Growing up the Internet was a source of bitterness. Looking back I realize that I was exactly that, bitter that my classmates had a seemingly unfair advantage over me in the classroom. I was bitter that they all could talk to each other in “group chats” and that they no longer saw telephone calls as a necessity. I felt left out. Now I feel that I have caught up technologically. I have my own computer and am in a major where there is practically a computer in every classroom. I can’t wait for the day when one of my friends has a computer problem and I can fix it, or when someone is talking about new improvements made to wireless towers or something to that effect and I actually understand what they are talking about.
After thinking about it, it seems as if I chose this major in part just to prove to myself that I can catch up. Everyone else has had much more experience with computers and I am insanely competitive, almost to the point of fault. I want nothing more than to be just as good or better with the Internet than all of those kids who have had the Internet since it was first available. To me the Internet is the key to a successful future.

Blah

So I had to go to the freaking health center today and to make a long story short now I have stitches... To top it all off I am super pissed that they are on my back but they were telling me that I have to clean them twice a day and re-bandage them... like it was the simplest thing ever. They're on my back! How the hell am I supposed to be able to clean and bandage my back?!? But whatever. So now i'm grumpy and I don't want to go to Comp Sci and I know that in about 15 minutes whatever they put in my skin to numb it will wear off and it's going to hurt and I hate pain and I have homework to do. I don't feel like doing homework. I feel like being in bed and I don't care what anyone thinks I want my mom.

So I guess I will be posting my blog assignment later. I'm going to take a nap. I don't like pain so I took three tylenol in anticipation of the pain. ok the end

Citylife's Blog

http://community.livejournal.com/citylife/?skip=20

I checked blogger.com and the one right under that and I just didn't like them. So I clicked on livejournal and searched for a couple topics like softball and stupid things that I like but I didn't find a blog that particularly interested me... until I searched for "travel". I love travel and I hope to go EVERYWHERE when I grow up... i've been to Italy and I loved it but I don't just love overseas travel I love to travel to major cities like New York and Washington... and even Philadelphia even though living so close to it has made me bored iwith it. So I found the blog of Citylife and it was perfect! This blog is mostly pictures but that made me love it even more! I love pictures as well as cities and I feel like I won't be able to help checking this blog frequently. There are pictures from all over the world and others post their pictures on Citylife's blog as well and they are some amazing pictures. The first picture I saw was of children in Atlanta playing in a fountain and I thought the picture perfectly captured city life. There are hundreds of pictures that have been posted since 2001 when the blog was established. I have no idea how many posts I viewed but once I started I had trouble stopping. I don't like staring at the computer for long periods of time but that is usually when I am reading. Looking at all of the pictures was actually enjoyable.
I grew up in Norristown, PA which is kinda a mini Philadelphia and I remember when we would open the fire hydrants on hot days and play in the water. Pictures from cities all over the world are located throughout the blog. The purpose of this blog is simply to serve as a venue for people with the interest of photography and large cities to look at and post their own photos. When looking for personal information on CityLife I could not find any. Where the name is listed he/she refers to themself as "City Life" and there is no other information listed except for their personal interests. Therefore I don't there is any danger associated with this blog. The blogger has protected themself very wisely and offers nothing more than a fabricated screenname. There are no tags on the site but most of the pictures are labeled with which city is pictured. I could be wrong... but I didn't see any tagging.

Google Reader

I chose google reader as my RSS feed because it was the one that Andrea put up on the screen as an example and, being as technologically challenged as I am, decided that that would be the easiest one for me to do without messing something up. I don't really like the whole idea of an RSS feed because I don't really frequent any websites other than facebook and my msn hotmail. I'm sure now that I pretty much spend forever on the computer with the major that I have chosen to tackle that it will become more handy but right now I just find the numbers next to each site annoying because I feel like I have to read all of them or watch all of the videos and it seems like an insurmountable amount of work to me even though it's not required to look at all them... but I have to to make the numbers go away. Haha it's silly that something that is supposed to be convenient just frustrates me.

YAY!!

Ok so on the downside I am sick and I have a midterm in Comp Sci that I am in no way shape or form prepared for, but on the bright side, which is where I choose to live today, my Mom is driving three hours tomorrow to come up here. She is taking me to get my stitches out and then I get to go home for the first time since i've been here at Penn State. I get to see my dogs and my room and some of my friends, and oh yea my family. It's going to be the first laid back weekend in the longest time. No graduation parties, no going away parties, no frat parties or apartment parties... this is how I have been living since about a month before high school graduation and I can't wait to go to bed on Friday night at a decent hour, wake up and go shopping with my sister. Later that night I plan on going to my Grandmom's for dinner and sleeping over so that I can go to church with her Sunday morning. Alas, before I can go home I will have to do my Religious Studies and IST assignments so that I can go home and relax and maybe forget for the weekend that I am now living in the fast-paced and sleep deprived life of a college student.

My Blogging Policy/Evaluation

After reading several Corporate blogging policies like that of Yahoo!, Feedster, Sun Microsystems, Plaxo, Harvard Law School, and Thomas Nelson Publishers, I have compiled my all star roster of sorts of the type of rules that I would include if I were to create a policy of my own.
< 1 > All blogs must include a disclaimer stating that the views and opinions posted in the blog represent that of the blogger and not that of his/her employer.
< 2 > Bloggers will respect all company employees, competitors, customers, and company policies ( respect as in no slanderous, degrading, or insulting posts on the subjects).
< 3 > Information may not be posted about company policy, finances of the company, company products to be released, or anything that may be deemed private by the company.
< 4 > Bloggers must avoid any activity that would incur legal action that could sully the reputation of the company.
< 5 > Bloggers are reminded to use common sense when posting. Write in a manner that is appropriate for all audiences.
< 6 > All rules are subject to interpretation by Company officials and all punishments will be decided upon and directly proportional to the severity of the violation up to and including termination.

My number one rule was mentioned in some form by each of the policies that I evaluated however in most there were specific disclaimers quoted that employees were required to add to their blogs. My number two rule was also mentioned in each policy although there were several different ways to word them whether the term slander was used or disrespect. I tried to incorporate many different terminologies because I don’t have a specific company that I was speaking to and therefore had less of an idea of my audience.

Many, if not all of my guidelines are mentioned in the corporate blogging policies that I observed. There were variations depending on the company that set the policy. For example, true to form the policy of the Harvard Law School was very conscious of legal matters such as copyright infringements and legal rights to postings and information. I also noticed that the policy of Sun Microsystems was much more casual and spoke to the people who more commonly work with computers and perhaps “know better”. In this policy I adopted the “common sense” guideline, which speaks to computer professionals who know right from wrong when referring to internet blogging. The Plaxo policy was seemingly barren of details but the reference to the employee handbook implies that the company is more face to face and hands on and that employees are briefed on policies more personally.

Most of my rules and regs were the most popular from the corporate blogging policies that I analyzed. Some of the more unique rules were ones like the prohibition of posting solicitations and advertisements by the Thomas Nelson Publishers policy. The Harvard Law School policy notes that they have the right to remove any posts that they deem unfit for the blog, which I think is more relevant to the company protecting itself from legal action against them. This is a law conscious guideline that speaks to the nature of the company itself.

I enjoyed reading the Sun Microsystems policy because it was written in a way that almost appealed to someone my age in that it wasn’t too technical. It was casual in a way that made it seem like the guidelines were in your best interest and you would be protecting yourself. Some of the more unique phrases were “Be interesting”, “Don’t Tell Secrets”, and “Write What You Know”.

Group Project

At the beginning of this little project I really had no idea what I was doing or what the second, third, fourth level meant at all and I was pretty sure that my group was going to tell me that i'm stupid. Now, i'm not sure if they still think i'm stupid, but I feel more confident in contributing to the project because I have a better understanding of what we are trying to accomplish and how to do it. This is really how I prefer to learn. I prefer to learn with hands-on experience and learning by example. If I see someone else do something once, maybe twice, i'm fairly confident that I too can do what they have just done.

In general I am starting to become more confident with my place in this class and this college with each passing assignment, test, and grade that I have. I actually went to the library downtown and instead of getting the books I normally get that are simply pleasure reads and of no academic value, I picked up a few books that I am actually interested to skim through and see what else I can learn about my computer. I feel that once I have a better understanding of how my system works I will be able to better understand the way that other systems function.

This was the basis for our group project and was the starting point from which we were able to link several other websites including some very popular websites such as:

Resumes

http://steve-yegge.blogspot.com/2007/09/ten-tips-for-slightly-less-awful-resume.html

This is actually a blog that I heard about from Garrett because he used it for one of his assignments and I enjoyed reading it so I added it to my RSS feed. I liked this particular entry on resumes because I just finished writing mine for my freshman seminar class. I love that this guy incorporates useful information with some hilarious anecdotes. In this entry he stresses the importance of avoiding stupid errors by telling the story of a time when he wrote his objective was to work at IBM when he was applying at Amazon. I actually laughed out loud while reading this because I can just imagine the embarrassment of being confronted with this error. I just thought that this was an interesting thing to appear at the top of my RSS feed considering I spent a large portion of my day deciding what to include in my resume.
