Comment on "Philosophy in Dialogue: Plato's Many Devices"

Dear Sirs,

I am not sure that it is entirely correct to claim that "Traditional Plato scholarship, in the English-speaking world, has assumed that Platonic dialogues are merely collections of arguments."

Perhaps one could rather say that traditional Plato scholarship has MOSTLY FOCUSED on reading the Platonic dialogues AS being collections of arguments. But the question "what is Plato REALLY up to?" has, what I can understand, always been there also, either in an implicit or explicit form; and THAT question is a much broader one, and NOT primarily about philosophical arguments, conclusions, and premises.

Apart from this small detail, it is, of course, VERY encouraging to see that this work has been presented, and that the "broader" question now gets some real attention. I have not had the chance to take part of your publication yet, but judging from the description above, it should be of utmost importance to serious students of ancient philosophy and literature.

Best wishes,
Bo C. Klintberg
Comment on "Unprecedented Number of Submissions Received"

As another submitter of a paper to this conference, I was also very disappointed to not receive any notice by email that my paper was received and is being reviewed. Although it was some relief to find this site and discover the cause of this oversight, the big question remains. Would you please give all of us a clear idea of when you will be finished your deliberations, when we will be notified, and thus when we can begin making our plans for April?

- Another Anonymous Submitter

Thank you for your interest in the Society and I will be sure that in the future we send such correspondence to everyone who has submitted a paper. Of course, part of the purpose of this page is to keep people posted on what is happening in the Society. It is not, however, meant to replace the personal correspondence of which you speak.

- Christopher P. Please make sure this message is sent by email to every submitter, because if my case is not unique, nobody knows what's going on unless they find this webpage.

Jill:

Yes, you may be right about this. I will talk it over with the Executive Committee, but I imagine that these guidelines were established to err on the side of brevity as 30 minutes easily bleeds into 40 and we, as always, want to maximize time for discussion. I hope you are well.

Hi Chris,

The call for papers says 3,000 words or 30 minutes reading time. Wouldn't approximately 5,000 words be closer in equivalence to 30 minutes reading time (i.e., about 14-15 pages)? I think 3,000 words translates to about 8-10 pages, or fewer than 20 minutes reading time.

- Jill Gordon

I've recently written an unpublished paper that has earned tremendous praise from the few professors who have seen it. I'm considering it for submission here, and I am requesting to know if there are any other specific guidelines other than those posted here concerning 4 paper copies and 1 digital copy. (spacing, fonts, style, etc...)

Thank you
