When this card is Normal Summoned or Special Summoned
successfully, you can add 1 Spell Card from your
Graveyard to your hand. A monster that is destroyed
by this monster as a result of battle is removed from
play instead of going to the Graveyard. When this card
is destroyed or removed from the field, it is removed
from play.

First I'd like to say that our fearless leader drops by our cotw site
today personally picking the card we are reviewing ^^
Today we review the all around best 2 tribute monster currently in
the game, considered this for its splash ability into ANY deck....DMOC
has some very interesting effects, and some very nice combos... For
starters, its a 2800/2600 for 2 tributes...That's pretty good for a
2 tribute monster, and probably the only 2 tribute monster I would
consider playing in a cookie cutter deck. If you manage to tribute
summon him, you get to "magician of faith" a spell card out of your
graveyard, not to shabby eh? You can easily use this as discard bait,
then revive it with premature burial or call of the haunted to set
off its spell effect. I would like to note however, if your
playing this with the card from the new spell caster structure
"magical dimension" you CAN NOT use both effects because of timing
issues, however you may select either or, so you can destroy a
monster on their field, OR you can return a spell card from your
grave to your hand (I'll be happy to explain timing, priority,
and targeting to you, just im me...)
Now, lets look at his other effects... If he kills a monster,
its gone! That's incredible, you can attack without worrying about
searchers like sangan and tomato going off, and you can get rid
of treeborn frog once and for all! However watch out for your
opponent playing Return from the different dimension... The
effect that this card is removed when destroyed could help you
play your Return too...However, its more of a nuisance then anything
else... It is a bad idea to use this for chaos food, because
if its in your grave, you can special summon it for a +1 spell
card, which I'd rather do then summon sorcerer with DMOC's
life blood.... Its always an option though...
Over all this card is one of the best out there if you can fit it
in your deck... If your only running 1 or 2 tributes, then
splash him in, you might be surprised...

The ultimate version of Yugi's favorite monster, the Dark
Magician of Chaos. People see the name and notice 'Chaos' and
think to themselves "not good." This is because Chaos decks
are a vast majority of decks run today. However, just because
the name has 'chaos' in it, does not mean that it's time
to run and hide.
His stats are quite impressive for a level 8 monster
(2800atk/2600def). Not only are the stats a tremendous feat,
but he's got a couple darn good effects as well. For the
first, whenver he is summoned or special summoned to the
field, you get a spell card back to your hand from the
graveyard (which as stated in our previous review, is
definitely a good thing). However, beyond the spell card
revitalization lies another truely terrifying power. Any
monster that this Mage of Chaos destroys in battle is
removed from the game. When you have a 2800 powerhouse
monster to contend against, the first thing an opponent
would think is to defend until a way is discovered to
defeat it. But you may want to think again, because
defending could simply delay the eventual defeat when
this spellcaster is removing your monsters from the game.
Not only is this monter's effects and stats powerful, but
this Mage is also a Spellcaster with a dark attribute. Two
of the best characteristics in the game lie within this
creature. Hm.....this monster has so many amazing traits,
what's the bad news?
Well, for starters this is a two-tribute monster. A level
of monster not used much in the game. Yes, there are other
ways to bring him out (such as Magical Dimension and
Dedication through Light and Darkness). The biggest downfall
of this mighty magician is that if he is ever removed from
the field, he is removed from the game. So, getting DMOC
onto the field may be a feat in itself, but being able to
maintain its position on the field may be even tougher.
Back to my comment on the 'chaos' part of his name....Although
it would seem right to stash him into a chos themed deck,
there are much better monsters that could easily take his
position, such as the wonderous Magician of Faith (reviewed
previously). The Dark Magician of Chaos is best left to be
put into a deck with the basis of the Dark Magician theme.
In this deck there is a much better chance of getting
him to the field.

what have we here...at 2800 2 offering monster...hmmm...nice...oh
wait! 2 effects.
effect #1) when it's summoned you get a magic card back, so it's
kind of like a MoF. that means graceful, NoC, and all that good
stuff again. this is kinda nifty but not worth the 2 monsters
you need to offer.
effect #2) when it destroys a monster in battle, you get to have
fun by removing it. yeah, goodbye sangan, goodbye masked dragon,
mystic tomato and basically searchers. however when it leaves the
field, it dies. that means even if it's returned to your hand...
that's the downside.
now the support! you have dedication through light and darkness...
nice card. quickplay so it's like "i smashing your Dark Magician" "OH
YEAH!?" flip it up and now your opponent is looking at this bad boy.
yeah...nice
dimension fusion=otk. you just need some other stuff, but it does
happen. and it adds to its usability. but not its main point.
Definately not meant to be thrown into any old deck, but useul

Dark Magician of Chaos is the best Spellcaster to date, and
one of the best 2-tribute monsters to play. Let's look at
this card in detail.
2800 ATK. That's very good for today's format, where the
strongest monster you'll most likely see is a monarch.
Formidable indeed.
On top of it's superior stats, DMoC removes any monster it
destroys from play. This can give you a big advantage in
many situations. Here are just a few examples -
+ Treeborn Frog. No more swarming, especially with Soul/Monarch Control.
+ Battle searchers like tomato. No deck-thinning, speed, and field control there.
+ Newdoria. It's starting to see some play, mostly in combo with the afforementioned battle searchers.
+ Sangan. A searching staple. Removing this from the game could determine the outcome of the duel.
Now for the con. Against a RFG deck, DMoC will always work
against you. If you know your opponent is running it, side it
out immediately if you're main decking it.
Now, for DMoC's second effect - grabbing a Spell from your grave.
Pessimists always say "Magician of Faith is better." MoF is simply
easier to use being a 1* Light attribute that can be comboed with
Tsukuyomi. With the new ban though, she's pulling off her effect
less and less, since NoC and MS2 are becoming very common in decks
and side decks. However, DMoC is better at his job, since he almost
always has priority without delay, while MoF's effect is a 2-turn
process.
Lastly, when DMoC is destroyed while face up, it gets removed from
the game. While this is not a positive effect at first glance, it's
great for RFG decks, and decks that run or side deck Return from
the Different Dimension or Dimension Fusion.
Now to talk about advanced rulings. Here's a few things to clear
up about DMoC that's argued alot -
Missing the Timing: If "Dark Magician of Chaos" is Special Summoned
in the middle of a chain (if it is not the last effect in the chain
to resolve), the timing will not be correct for its Optional
Trigger Effect, so you do NOT return a Spell Card from your
Graveyard to your hand.
"Dark Magician of Chaos" is NOT removed from play if it is
destroyed in your hand or Deck.
When "Dark Magician of Chaos" is Special Summoned with "Reasoning",
his effect activates.
Looking at this, a few combinations arise - Graceful Charity +
Premature Burial / Call of the Haunted, Reasoning + DMoC, and
Book of Moon w/ DMoC before it gets destroyed, leaving it ready
to revive itself and another Spell card.
Well, that's nearly everything we can talk about with DMoC.
Altogether this card is not a staple, but it's still playable.
Try it out, see if it fits with your style of play.
